MAIN RESULTS REPORTED IN YEAR 2006
1.Microstructure and quantum properties of intrinsic and irradiation point defects in wide bandgap
crystalline materials.
The materials properties of the wide band-gap insulators and semiconductors can be
dramatically influenced by the presence of different point defects with specific atomic properties.
By producing and investigating the atomic properties of new point defects in such crystalline
materials and their influence on the physical, macroscopic properties (electrical, optical,
magnetic) one can model the corresponding materials properties for a large array of applications.
The single-mode vibration as the dominant mechanism in spin-lattice interaction of the Gd 3+
impurity ions in scintillating PbWO4 single crystals has been identified from ESR parameters vs.
T investigation. (J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 18, 719-728 (2006))
Investigation into the production and properties of point defects induced by radiolysis and
subsequent thermochemical treatments in chlorinated SrCl2:Fe single crystals has resulted in new
Fe + -type of paramagnetic centers, which are thermally stable at high (above 300K) temperatures.
As shown in the next figure , their mechanism of formation and atomic structure has been
elucidated by multifrequency ESR investigations, as being due to the presence of interaction of
chlorine interstitials and alkali cations, present as native impurities in the SrCl2 latice host. Due
to their high thermal stability such centers can be used for practical applications.
2.Local structure, defects and disorder in nanomaterials with luminescent and special
magnetoresistive properties
Local structure, spin dynamics and core-shell effects in granular, nanostructured and nanowires
lanthanum magnetoresistive manganites have been evidenced by EPR. The temperature
dependence of the EPR linewidth vs. δH1/2 for La2/3Ca1/3MnO3-δ samples of different grain size,
as fitted with the small polaron model is presented in the figure below.
Microstructure of different crystalline phases in organic semiconductor (tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline)aluminum),
3.Microstructure of oxide, carbide and nitride nanopowders, thin films and laser processed
materials.
Crystallographic relations in advanced tribological multilayers produced by pulsed laser
deposition have been determined from TEM investigations (Surface and Coatings Techn. 200,
6190-6195 (2006)).
4.Microstructure transformations and defect associated phenomena in advanced materials.
Qualitative and quantitative characterization of the {111} planar defects in H-plasma treated Si
wafers has been performed by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The
quantitative image processing by the geometrical phase method of the HRTEM image of an
edge-on {111} defect reveals the intrinsic character of the defect and provides quantitative
information about the lattice strain around it.
of the εyy component (∂uy/∂y) of the symmetrical strain matrix εij; (c) averaged line
profile of the strain component εyy across the defect.
The derived quantitative information allowed us to propose a structural model for the defect,
which in turn has been verified by HRTEM image simulations (Philosophical Magazine 86,
5137-5151 (2006)).
