Sports Surf’s up in New Plymouth New Plymouth surfers stood out from the crowd in the Fire Service Surfriding Championships this year. The kneeboard, women’s, 50 Plus and teams events all went to New Plymouth competitors. Mike Clarke, Wellington, won the open and under 40 years events with Daisy Day, New Plymouth, winning the women’s section. Longboard winner was Steve Sosich, Auckland and the still can’t stand title went to Jamie McCarthy, Napier. The event was held over three venues on the Taranaki coast, and was once again hosted by the New Plymouth Fire Brigade. The competition was held over four days to allow organisers to pick the three best surf days. This meant competitors were given the opportunity to show their skills on a variety of breaks ranging from Graveyards, south of Okato, to Back Beach at the western end of New Plymouth and Fitzroy Beach in the heart of the city. The New Zealand Fire Service Lawn Club hosted the 13th carnival in Taranaki. Almost 140 Australians made the journey to join about 40 Kiwi players. In total 96 players entered in the fours and pairs events, while 80 took part in the singles. The fours was won by a Taranaki team: Jim Priest, Ernie Ward, Max Reesby and Mike Wesley. Ernie made it a double when he won the singles. New Zealand also won the Bamford Trophy for the state whose players accumulate the highest number of points in the quarter fi nals and beyond. The Tasmanians won the pairs event and the trophy contest by six nominated representatives from each state. Organisers thank fi nancial supporters, national commander Mike Hall and national headquarters staff who produced the souvenir programme. The New Plymouth Fire Brigade provided volunteer drivers and the club is grateful for the continued support of the Fire Service Sports Council. It will be almost a decade before the event returns to New Zealand. Winning fours team: Jim Priest, Ernie Ward, Mike Wesley and Max Reesby. Ernie also won the singles.
