together to tackle road deaths
World Crash Rescue Challenge & Staying Alive expo
More than 100 brand new cars will
be demolished as crash rescue
competition experts from throughout
the world vie for the top spot.
Teams from Spain, Germany, the UK
and US will head for Mystery Creek,
near Hamilton, in October to
compete in the Australasian and
world finals of the World Crash
Rescue Challenge.
And while fi refi ghters are showing off
their rescue skills by cutting up and
destroying 150 brand new Holden
cars, New Zealand’s emergency
services and other agencies will present
a four-day Staying Alive Expo.
One of the organisers is Hamilton chief
fi re offi cer Roy Breeze. Roy says the
idea is to take the opportunity of the
rescue challenge to expose members of
the public to how emergency services
and related organisations work to save
people’s lives.
The aim is to raise awareness and
show people how to be better
prepared should an emergency or
major disaster strike.
The theme for the
expo is be rescued or
be the rescuer.
“Already this year the Waikato has
experienced more than 40 fatalities
on our roads, compared to 13 for the
whole of last year. As a Fire Service
we respond to about 2000 incidents a
year where we have to rescue people
from crashed cars in New Zealand.”
The theme for the expo is be rescued
or be the rescuer. Demonstrations
will range from line rescue and
urban search and rescue to car
crashes, live fi res and fi rearm safety.
All major emergency services
will take part, along with other
Snapshots
organisations who work to prevent
accidents of all types and maintain
health and safety in New Zealand.
Local authorities, ACC, road safety
organizations and other services will
be involved in promoting the event,
Roy says.
“One of the things we want to do is
take on the FireWise philosophy,
which is in order to get a message
through, you have to talk to the
children.” Thirty local schools have
expressed interest in attending and
organisers suspect this number will
to grow.
“The expo will be the largest combined
effort of emergency services to work
towards developing public resilience,
awareness and prevention through a
wide range of emergencies.”
Organisers are looking for help from
throughout the Fire Service. Roy would
be keen to hear if you can assist. The
expo and crash rescue challenge will
be held October 8-15, 2005.
