The following large packagings are authorized, provided that the general provisions of 4.1.1 and 4.1.3 are met:<br />

(1) For clinical waste placed in inner packagings: Rigid, leakproof large packagings conforming to the<br />

requirements of Chapter 6.6 for solids, at the packing group II performance level, provided that there is<br />

sufficient absorbent material to absorb the entire amount of liquid present and the large packaging is capable<br />

of retaining liquids.<br />

(2) For packages containing larger quantities of liquid: Large rigid packagings conforming to the requirements of<br />

Chapter 6.6, at the packing group II performance level, for liquids.<br />

Additional requirement:<br />

Large packagings intended to contain sharp objects such as broken glass and needles shall be resistant to puncture<br />

and retain liquids under the performance test conditions in Chapter 6.6.<br />

LP902 PACKING INSTRUCTION LP902<br />

This instruction applies to UN No. 3268.<br />

Packaged articles:<br />

The following large packagings are authorized, provided that the general provisions of 4.1.1 and 4.1.3 are met:<br />

Packagings conforming to the packing group III performance level. The packagings shall be designed and constructed<br />

to prevent movement of the articles and inadvertent operation during normal conditions of transport.<br />

Unpackaged articles:<br />

The articles may also be transported unpackaged in dedicated handling devices, vehicles, containers or wagons when<br />

moved from where they are manufactured to an assembly plant.<br />

Additional requirement:<br />

Any pressure vessel shall be in accordance with the requirements of the competent authority for the substance(s)<br />

contained in the pressure vessel(s).<br />

4.1.5 Special packing provisions for goods of Class 1<br />

4.1.5.1 The general provisions of section 4.1.1 shall be met.<br />

4.1.5.2 All packagings for Class 1 goods shall be so designed and constructed that:<br />

(a) They will protect the explosives, prevent them escaping and cause no increase in the<br />

risk of unintended ignition or initiation when subjected to normal conditions of<br />

transport including foreseeable changes in temperature, humidity and pressure;<br />

(b) The complete package can be handled safely in normal conditions of transport; and<br />

(c) The packages will withstand any loading imposed on them by foreseeable stacking to<br />

which they will be subject during transport so that they do not add to the risk<br />

presented by the explosives, the containment function of the packagings is not harmed,<br />

and they are not distorted in a way or to an extent which will reduce their strength or<br />

cause instability of a stack.<br />

4.1.5.3 All explosive substances and articles, as prepared for transport, shall have been classified in<br />

accordance with the procedures detailed in 2.1.3.<br />

4.1.5.4 Class 1 goods shall be packed in accordance with the appropriate packing instruction shown<br />

in Column 8 of the Dangerous Goods List, as detailed in 4.1.4.<br />
