Principal contractor obligations
A Principal Contractor is
responsible for the onsite
work until all work
is completed, and is also
responsible for engaging all
subcontractors. They must
also prepare occupational
health and safety (OHS)
management plans and
ensure all site workers have
successfully completed OHS
induction training.
Additionally, a Principal Contractor
must prepare a site specific
OHS management plan for each
place of work where the work
commences, ensure the plan is
kept up to date and prevent any
person who has not undertaken
OHS induction training from
carrying out any work on site.
They must also comply with OHS
induction requirements and assist
employers (or self employed
people) at the site to carry out their
OHS obligations. They are also
required to ensure employees,
the general public and people
on-site are protected from, as far
a reasonably practical, workplace
injury, illness and disease.
Enforcing OHS requirements
also includes identifying any
changes on the site, or activities
performed by a person working
on the site that may affect their
health or safety. If a change
has occurred then each person
carrying out that task undergoes
further OHS induction as is
necessary to enable that person
to carry out the work safely
despite the change.

Further to this, the Principal
Contractor must ensure all
equipment used on site has been
tested and tagged according to
statutory and code requirements.
They must also ensure all personal
protective equipment (PPE) and
protective devices, signage and
barricading required by law is
used and installed correctly.
A Principal Contractor must also
keep a register of all hazardous
substances, ensure any
subcontractor has a Certificate
of Currency which is current for
up to four months, and ensure
all subcontractors have their own
safe work method statement
before they begin work on the
site, to which they must comply.
OHS management plans must
also be created and include a
statement of responsibilities,
listing the names, positions
and responsibilities of all the
people with specified OHS
responsibilities on site. It must
also include the details of the
arrangements for ensuring
compliance with the requirements
for OHS induction training and
details of the arrangements for
managing OHS safety incidents.
A principal contractor must
ensure all workers on site,
including subcontractors, have
undertaken OHS induction
training. Topics that should be
addressed in the OHS induction
training include:
• worksite map and evacuation
plan

Footy Fever 2009 may have

Removal Capability
A Hyflo separator is much more efficient than most
strainers as it will remove particles 45 microns in size
(or the equivalent of a 325 mesh strainer) and heavier
than 1.20 specific gravity. A strainer of this quality
would create a large pressure drop, require frequent
cleaning and be very expensive to purchase and install.
A Hyflo separator continuously removes debris from
water. The "rate of separation" depends on the size
and amount of particles being removed. Hyflo has
independent tests which show that 169.15 cubic
centimetres of #60 grade sand was removed in 15
minutes from 60 litres of water.

Did you know that Continuous
Flow water heaters waste
more water than any other
water heater? This is due to the
time it takes for their heating
mechanisms to reach full
temperature.
In fact, the research conducted
for WELS has shown that a
Continuous Flow water heater
in a typical home can waste
between 1.2 and 2.5 litres of
water every time the hot water
tap is turned on. Based on
average household hot water
consumption of 200L per day and
19 demands (as per AS 4552),
homes can waste up to 17,300

water heaters are extremely
energy and space efficient, the
issue of water wastage cannot be
ignored,” he said.
Rheem Water Star captures cold/
warm water from the Continuous
Flow water heater for re-heating
later, and releases already-hot
water for instant use. The same
size as a Rheem Continuous
Flow water heater, Rheem Water
Star’s compact tank has a small
electrical element keeping water
permanently hot.
Positioned on the wall alongside
a Continuous Flow water heater,
Rheem Water Star is fitted in the
hot water line. When hot water
is required, it is piped directly to
the tap from Rheem Water Star,
while the Continuous Flow water
heater reaches temperature.
During this time, the cold/warm
water is diverted into the Rheem
Water Star tank. Once the
Continuous Flow water heater
reaches the right temperature, an
inbuilt valve diverts the hot water
direct to the tap.
When hot water is required,
it is delivered at 70°C, which
is a similar temperature to a
storage water heater. The only
non-heated water received in
the home is the water left in the
pipes from the last use (the ‘dead
leg’). Rheem Water Star reduces
wastage at the heater outlet from
1.2 litres to just 200mL.
