Raindrop is several healing
modalities in one technique.
Pure essential oils are absorbed
directly into skin, connective
tissue and blood stream. Light
massage and reflex techniques are
used on energy meridians in back,
shoulders and feet. Aroma-therapy
provides direct brain and nervous
system response to oils. Ending
with a heat compress on energy
meridians of spine and lower back
assist oil absorption and deep
muscle relaxation.

Buying a Home in Santa Cruz
Don’t Follow the Crowd
by Terry Cavanagh, Realtor, SRES, MSW
Buying a home in Santa Cruz is so expensive the average
person must consider the financial aspect of the purchase
very carefully. A home purchase cannot just be about the
aesthetics and choices of home, it must include longer range
family financial planning.
In the first half of the last
decade it appeared prices in
Santa Cruz would never stop going
up, or even if they stopped going up,
it was inconceivable they would ever
come down again. The media frequently
reported the new high average
home price in your community.
It was just common knowledge that
houses cost a lot and would cost
more if you didn’t hurry up and get
into the market and get your own.
Everyone was stressed about how
they were going to get into the market,
get a home, and by the way make
$100,000 in
equity in a
few years like
someone else
they knew.
There was a
kind of herd
mentality.
Similar to
Terry Cavanagh
when the tech
stock market
bubble burst, pundits explained the
buying frenzy as having been driven
up by “irrational exuberance.”
This last housing appreciation
market lasted 12 years, five years
longer than the normal historical
cycle of up and down that had existed
for many decades. Those years
pushed price increases from 2000 to
2006 and made little sense to me as
a seasoned real estate investor and
observer of the market over the last
three decades. At that time,
I encouraged my clients
only to buy if they planned
to keep the home for a long
time, and to beware of
speculative investing.
Today I am seeing the
herd running in the opposite
direction. Many people are
too frightened and shy of
the housing market because
of the bad press and all the
bad talk on the street about
how bad the market is. It is
only a bad market for
people who want to sell
their property for prices that
this market will not support,
or those who owe more on
Page 4 ▲ The Connection Magazine ▲ www.ConnectionMagazineOnline.com ▲ June 2011
their homes than they are worth.
Regrettably, this is a large percentage
of homeowners today.
For the buyers who are getting
affordable homes right now, it is a
very good market. For the sellers
who are successfully selling at
current prices and moving their
money into new homes or investments
or other life projects, it is a good
market. It is a little slower market
than a few years ago and Realtors are
making less money, but this does not
make it a “bad” market. It is a market
where a very experienced, seasoned
and professional Realtor is truly an
asset.
This month the interest rates
dipped down again to 4.5% for 30
year fixed mortgages. The prices
for buyers are so low that two of
my last five transactions included
couples buying their first homes
with mortgage p ayments that were
the same as their rent! One couple
had a 20% down payment and the
other 5%. They now enjoy painting
and decorating their own homes,
keeping dogs and cats as pets,
growing beautiful gardens, are not
beholden to any landlord’s opinion,
not concerned about landlords
kicking them out, having friends
stay with them as long as they like,
and paying a mortgage that month
by month builds up their home
equity, buying children’s play
equipment for their yard, and a
deeper sense of security in their
expanded living environments.
Just as last decade was the time
to avoid following the herd, so is
this decade. Take a look at the
options for home ownership now,
while prices and interest rates are
on the floor. It really is the lowest
the market has been in a very long
time. Individual research with a
trusted Realtor, and focus about
opportunities in this housing
market, as opposed to the popular
negative media slogans, should pay
off for savvy homebuyers and
investors in today’s era.
Springtime always brings fear
for Sarah. That’s when her nose
swells up, is constantly dripping
and red, and the time that she gets sinus
headaches that can last for days on end.
She’s afraid to go outside looking like
this and avoids all the fun springtime
celebrations as well. Sarah’s allergies
prevent her from living her life to the
fullest. Each year that goes by, she
continues to notice more and more
instances where life’s fun moments
are slipping away from her. If only
she could stop her allergies and her
dependence on antihistamines, allergy
shots and over-the-counter formulas and
their side effects, she could have a better
quality of life.
Are You Like Sarah?
Like Sarah, you may have tried to
do everything you could to eliminate
your allergy symptoms. But have you
really tried everything… or have you
just tried everything that you KNOW
about?
There is another way—the naturopathic
medical approach can open
the doors to new ways to look at old
problems.
Diet is important. Even though the
allergies in the Spring involve mainly
respiratory symptoms, avoiding food
by Gloria Morotti
There are millions of people who
are chronically ill. Can vaccination
create these chronic
conditions? When a child becomes ill
immediately following a vaccination,
the cause is often obvious; linking
vaccination to chronic illness is more
diffi cult. The story is mine.
At the age of six, I began painful
ear infections. Soon, I developed
coughing spells in the middle of the
night. Tonsillectomies were de rigeur
at the time. The surgical removal of
the “fi rst line of defense” of my immune
system was brutal. The symptoms
worsened instead of correcting.
allergens can go a long way towards
decreasing symptoms. The most common
offenders are dairy and gluten,
and I often suggest avoiding those for
just a few weeks during the months of
May/June and again in the fall.
Some nutritional supplements can
also aid tremendously in decreasing
symptoms:
Nettles—in the freeze dried form
have been shown to decrease allergic
reactions.
Quercetin—a biofl avonoid, reduces
the symptoms by strengthening
the walls of white blood cells called
macrophages and hence impeding the
release of histamine.
Vitamin C—the great helper also
acts on white blood cells and regulates
immunity.
Vitamin D3—T cells of the immune
system have receptors on them
for vitamin D. I like to include it in the
regimen for allergies.
One of the organs that regulate the
body’s response to allergens is the adrenal
gland. If your life has many stressors
or you fi nd yourself overwhelmed,
chances are your adrenal glands are
overworking. Herbs and vitamins that
nourish those can help with Allergy
control. I like in particular:
Pantothenic Acid—This B vita-
I began a series of allergy injections
which lasted for years.
At the age of nine, a new symptom
presented. Summer arrived and
a horrible skin condition appeared—
huge fl uid-fi lled blisters that would
break and form secondary blisters.
My mother assumed this condition was
poison ivy and gave me calamine lotion.
Every summer until I was seventeen
this condition appeared, each year
on a different part of my body—arms,
the soles of my feet. I was the only
kid I knew who adored school—in no
small part because it was a reprieve
from summer!
Other symptoms appeared. Mi-
min (B5) is essential for adrenal gland
functioning. Without it, the body cannot
switch from survival mode (extreme
stress) back to normal functioning.
NOT IF YOU TRY A HOLISTIC, NATURAL APPROACH...
that works as an adaptogen.
Many other nutrients can be used
to regulate immunity and strengthen the
body. As naturopathic physicians, we
make a concerned effort on individualizing
diagnosis and choosing a treatment
accordingly. So if you have tried even
natural remedies like the ones in this
article and did not get better, maybe it is
time to consider Naturopathic Medicine
FABULOUS FEET
by Sylvia Skefi ch, D.C.
Chiropractors who are trained in adjusting
feet can do wonders for foot pain.
Modern Doctors of Chiropractic are
trained for structural and functional evaluation....
What this means is that the chiropractor
is capable of determining if the foot bones and
joints of the ankle are moving correctly, and
is also able to determine if the joints perform
correctly “in action.”
Doctors of Chiropractic vary in their specialties,
so make sure that you go to a chiropractor
who actively practices on feet. In my offi ce,
I use a variety of assessment methods. Here is
a limited overview of how I think:
Standing up, a trained eye can see if the
foot is pronated (or sagging down at the arch).
Additionally, there is a motion test to tell if
the arch muscles are “functionally” weak. For
instance, the arch may look quite high, but
if the muscles fail to engage the bones when
walking, then the knee and hip receive jarring
motions with each step like a pogo stick, rather
than a spring-like pitch and roll. This can lead
to early arthritis, and the pain of muscular
compensations.
You have probably heard of “plantar fasciitis.”
The plantar fascia is a soft tissue structure
that spans from a tendon at the heel which fans
out towards the toes. When the arch is weak the
plantar fascia gets the “tight/weak” phenomena.
This means that tissues are being overused in
a taut and weakened state, leading to chronic
infl ammation, and pain.
Despite how high the arch may appear,
EASY DECELERATION
by Maghi Thurlow RMT
The little street where I live has a big yellow
diamond shaped sign that says SLOW.
Walking past it, I often appreciate the
calming reminder of how much I want to go
slower, to move away from feeling controlled
by time, watching the time, trying to be on time,
trying to make time for things, and often feeling
like I don’t have enough time.
“Time sickness” is becoming an accepted
medical concept, a possible cause of such conditions
as heart disease, high blood pressure,
ulcers, high cholesterol, and depression of the
immune system.
But according to modern physics, no physical
evidence has ever detected the fl ow of time.
In his book Time, Space, and Medicine, Dr
Larry Dossey presents evidence that our obsession
with time and our belief that time fl ows may
profoundly affect our health.
It seems that the perception of time passing
quickly causes our internal clocks to run faster—
speeding up some of our body’s rhythmical functions
such as our heart and respiratory rates.
Dr. Dossey believes that illnesses may often
be caused by our misconception of time. He has
witnessed many patients becoming healthier
through acquiring a new experiential meaning of
time and developing a friendliness with time.
This can be achieved by such methods as
meditation, biofeedback, visualization, relaxation
techniques, and receiving deeply relaxing
bodywork.
Many pastimes and hobbies share this
capacity to shift our perception of time as well.
Activities that we can become completely absorbed
in such as gardening, knitting, art, music,
dance, writing, and spending time in nature can
Page 6 ▲ The Connection Magazine ▲ www.ConnectionMagazineOnline.com ▲ June 2011
the foot with a
weak arch gets
a predictable
misalignment
pattern. The
heel gets stuck
cocked inward
(towards the
other foot).
This happens because other muscles attached
to the heel have been recruited to paddle the foot
with each step taken. This heel misalignment is
associated with outer shin muscle tension and a
greater potential for achilles tendon issues.
What is the cure for the weak arch? Three
things...
1. Correction of the misalignments: Merely
setting the bones goes only so far. The bones are
imbedded in pockets of muscle and other soft
tissue. That soft tissue has to be molded and reformed
to accommodate changes in the joints.
2. Active exercises: when patients do daily
exercises (at least initially) they will make much
faster progress.
3. Arch supports: I recommend Superfeet
insoles which have the necessary heel cup and
is a quality, inexpensive, and is available overthe-counter.
As I write
this article, I am
aware of some
stress building
about meeting my
deadline. Remembering
one of my
favorite Douglas
Adam’s quotes, “I
love deadlines. I
like the whooshing sound they make as they fl y
by”, I experience humor as an antidote to my
time-worry habit.
Here are 3 simple, yet deeply powerful ways
to decelerate, anytime, anywhere.
1. Breathe—more deeply. Bring awareness
to the contact of your feet on the ground, notice
how your body feels, and gently be with it.
2. Be present—notice your surroundings
using the senses of sight, sound, smell, touch,
and taste. Without judgment, observe your present
experience.
3. Be grateful—appreciate your life. “Optimist:
someone who isn’t sure whether life is a
tragedy or a comedy but is tickled silly just to be
in the play.” —Robert Brault.
I am thankful for our local restaurant
y David L. Biles, D.D.S., M.A.
One of the fi rst questions I
generally receive from a
patient after discussing the
Healthy Cell Concept, detoxifi cation,
and the removal of questionable
teeth and dental restorations
is… “What are we going to put back
in its place?”
My answer? “We have a choice
of plastic, metal, or glass.”
“Plastic, metal, or glass? What
do you mean by that?”
“Well, essentially, the types of
dental materials we have available to
restore the missing, decayed, or damaged
portions of your teeth fall under
three basic categories: plastic, metal,
or glass.”
“Plastic, metal, glass?”
“Yes. I tend to think of composite
dental materials as a type of plastic.
The alloys of gold I use represent
the metal alternatives, and porcelain
should certainly be considered as a
glass. By describing dental restorative
materials in broad classifi cations as I
have, I think lay people can more easily
understand the benefi ts and limitations
of each one. The languaging is
intended to take the dental mumbo
jumbo out of the equation.”
“I see. So how would you classify
a silver colored mercury amalgam
fi lling?”
“Sort of a hybrid plastic metal
because it can be bonded and exhibits
many metallic properties, plus it
slowly hardens enabling a dentist to
sculpt and shape it, much like concrete
is handled by contractors. However,
since I do not and have not placed silver
colored mercury amalgam fi llings
in many years, I would rather not discuss
it right now. However, what I will
say, on behalf of the dental profession,
is that silver colored mercury amalgam
as a dental restorative material has
wonderful working properties; it’s just
ugly, breaks teeth, and is poison—all
minor details, huh? Nonetheless, with
the exception of its negative properties,
as an economical material with
many fi ne working qualities and longevity,
dental amalgam was probably
the best dental restorative material
ever conceived. That is why it has
enjoyed its long popularity—that and
the disinformation circulated to the
medical and dental professions about
its toxicity by self interested parties.
But, then again, we now know so
much more about the physiological
effects of these materials on the human
body, and the information is available
at www.IAOMT and www.IABDM
so there really is little reason for a
dentist to use amalgam once he or she
is properly educated. ”
“What makes you simply compare
the dental materials to plastic,
metal, and glass?”
“Well, because, quite frankly,
the dental materials are just that…
• PLASTIC • METAL • GLASS
plastic, metal, and glass. There are, of
course, hybrids and combinations of
metals and glass, but basically we are
still talking plastic, metal, and glass
when we are discussing and comparing
dental materials we want to use in
restoring teeth. When I take away the
technical jargon I think it becomes a
bit easier for patients to understand
the properties of dental material more
realistically. Considering dental material
options as fundamentally plastic,
metal, or glass simplifi es and clarifi es
the conversation. I think it enables
a better understanding for patients
and allows more informed choices.
One of the questions I generally ask
patients is… ‘After years of use and
routine cleaning in your dishwasher,
which material looks best, second best,
and worst? Plastic, metal, or glass?’
People generally get how plastic looks,
relative to glass and metal—it’s worn
and water saturated, it’s altered. Metal
pots and pans versus glass or porcelain
plates and beverage wear conjure up
different images. Glass breaks, so do
porcelain crowns… occasionally, not
often, but they can and do break—they
are still glass. Strong glass, but glass
still, indeed. It would be foolish to
think that porcelain crowns are impervious
to breakage from chewing
extremely hard foods. Glass breaks,
porcelain breaks. I believe this analogy
helps patients conceptualize
more easily. That alone is helpful for
people to get and understand various
properties and longevity of dental
materials.”
“Why do you consider composite
a plastic/epoxy?”
“Because dental composites
behave macroscopically like plastic
and epoxy. Composites are physically
and chemically bonded to the enamel
or dentinal tubules, and exhibit great
esthetic properties. However, compos-
ites, like plastic, become
“waterlogged”
and colors change,
edges, margins leak
fl uids, and become
susceptible to decay.
Composites,
like plastics do not
exhibit great compressive
strength,
and they wear under
biting forces,
often earlier than
metal or glass chewing
surfaces. One
great advantage is
that composites can
be placed immediately
after amalgam
removal, whereas
glass and metal generally
necessitate an
additional visit for
placement. I do not
favor one visit porcelain
restorations
as I have seen few
that meet my stringent criteria for long
term success.”
“What about gold?”
“Ah, gold, the dentist’s choice
when it comes to dental materials.
This is what we dentists choose when
given the choice. Why? Because it
lasts and lasts and lasts and lasts and
lasts. There are many combinations
or alloys of gold, because pure gold is
too soft to use in the mouth, and it is
important to realize that some alloys
of gold are healthier than others. But…
we dentists like it, other than its color,
of course—we like it because of its
durability and handling properties. A
couple of years ago a dentist honored
me by requesting that I replace all of
her dental amalgams with gold. She
came all the way from Santa Rosa
for her treatment. What does that tell
you? Before I retire, which is certainly
12-15 years from now or more, I plan
to replace my children’s dental restorations
with gold. I don’t want them
to need restorative dental care after I
retire. So, I believe that if you require
dental intervention, it is always best
to minimize the total episodes and
gold allows that. Costly at fi rst, but
well worth the cost, in my opinion. It
is our most reliable time tested dental
restorative material on the planet. It’s
only negative is that it “pulls” mercury
out of silver colored mercury amalgam
fi llings. So mixing gold with amalgam
isn’t a good idea, long term.”
“So, plastic, metal, glass?”
“Yep. Plastic, metal, glass.”
She settled in Florence, living next
of the Renaissance, which allowed
Deborah to know her Inner Self more
As she continued her artistic path,
Today, Deborah displays various
HHP
Hormone deficiency
is the most underdiagnosed
health condition in
women and men.
Hormones can lift us up to the
height of our glory—or, they can cause
us to crash and burn.
As we paid tribute to Mother’s
Day last month and honored those who
have positively infl uenced our lives, I
refl ected on 62 years of personal experiences
and 27 years of professional
observations of many women I have
known—many of whom suffered from
depression.
Whether it’s PMS, post-partum
depression, mid-life crisis, real-life
crisis, menopause or an occasional
case of the blues, depression can often
be treated naturally and effectively,
without drugs.
Depression can be a very serious
condition and a major health concern if
left untreated. I consider it to be among
the so-called silent diseases, including
cardiovascular disease, neurological
disease and osteoporosis. While many
people silently cope with depression, its
effects reach entire families.
There is a direct correlation between
hormone levels and depression,
and Bio-Identical Hormones can be
highly effective in providing relief. Hypothyroidism
contributes to depression,
and thyroid function must be carefully
assessed.
It is important to look at the big
picture of health and not just focus on
what is wrong. Thorough lab testing to
assess overall health and hormone levels
can identify defi ciencies and imbalances
so that treatment
can be specific to individual needs.
Once a baseline has been established
and treatment has been implemented,
symptoms and lab tests need to be
monitored routinely.
Lab Test Recommendations for Assessing
Depression:
• Comprehensive blood chemistry for
overall health
• Thyroid: TSH, Free T3 and Free
T4
• Hormones: Pregnenolone, DHEA-
S, Estrone, Estradiol, Progesterone,
Testosterone Free and Total, Vit. D
and Cortisol (a.m. and p.m.)
There are many effective holistic
therapies for treating depression. The
greatest success typically comes from
utilizing treatment options that target
the primary causes. Other benefi ts of
bio-identical hormones and nutritional
therapies include improvements in
memory, sleep, confi dence, optimism,
libido, bone health, energy and stamina,
as well as relief of incontinence and hot
fl ashes.
Primary Treatment Options for
Depression:
• Bio-Identical Hormones: Progesterone,
Estradiol and Testosterone
• Thyroid Support: Iodine/Iodide and
Armour Thyroid
• Herbal Formulations: Maca, Tribulus
and Horny Goat Weed
• Homeopathics: Nervoheel (brand
name)
• Supplements: Vit. B-12, Vit. D, 5-
HTP and/or GABA
• Recommendation: Consult with a
health practitioner.
In addition to the primary treatment
options for depression, it is imperative to
maintain a healthful diet and lifestyle to
support long-term health benefi ts.
Dietary Recommendations for Depression:
• Avoid/limit all wheat products
• Consistently eat a healthful diet with
suffi cient protein
• Address anemia, digestive and constipation
issues
While I am “holistic” in my views
and treatment programs, I support the
usage of antidepressants when necessary.
I am, however, totally against the
usage of antidepressant-only therapy
and recommend integrative therapies to
address individual health needs.
If your physician refuses to do the
testing—then fi nd someone who will.
Bio-Identical Hormones and holistic
therapies can be highly benefi cial to
treat depression and improve overall
health. Once defi ciencies and hormonal
imbalances are restored, you could be
24 hours from feeling better and a few
months from optimal health.
Best advice: Don’t get a divorce,
end your relationship, quit your job or
give up until you know whether your
hormones are a part of the problem.
This article is not intended to address
critical situations which require
medical treatment. Information is
intended for depression that is primarily
a result of lifestyle and hormonal
imbalances.
STILL
GOING
STRONG
by Shelley Morris
Exercise should
be fun! Mind,
body, and spirit
engaged in activity that
strengthens, empowers
and makes you feel
good! Cardio Kickboxing
captures this perfectly.
It is a highly motivating
and challenging
workout.
Self confidence,
weight loss, stress release,
flexibility, increased
stamina, cardiovascular
health, connection
with a fitness
community. Sounds
good, doesn’t it? These
are just a few of the
benefi ts of Cardio Kickboxing.
With focus and
intent, it isn’t just possible,
it WILL happen!
Who doesn’t want to be
stronger, have more selfesteem
or lose weight? I am a walking,
talking billboard for the real life benefi
ts of this exercise program.
I can’t tell you how many times
a student will walk into the school,
stressed out, in a hurry, and with so
many things to do. For that hour it’s
just about them. At the end of class
they leave bright-eyed, relaxed and
ready to continue on with their day,
smiling, centered and grounded.
After a warm-up set to high-energy
music, we put on our gloves for
twenty-fi ve minutes of punching and
kicking combinations on the heavy
bags. Punching results in a stronger,
more toned upper body. Add some
squats to your kicks and you get the
added bonus of powerful
legs and abdominals.
We fi nish the hour
on the floor, working
our core muscles and
stretching.
Safety is an important
component of
any exercise program.
Learning the correct
positioning and posture
is key to Cardio Kickboxing.
This is fundamental
in our martial
arts school.
As a Cardio Kickboxing
instructor since
1999, I’ve had the pleasure
of watching men
and women of all sizes
and shapes empower
themselves through this
dynamic program. I
absolutely love helping
people work toward
their fi tness goals. The
workouts change weekly
to prevent boredom
and keep it challenging.
If you are looking for a
new energizing, whole
body work out, Cardio
Kickboxing may be for you!
Your Very Practical QUESTIONS
Answered by Dr. Dan Beilin
With 4 reactor meltdowns in Japan,
and now it comes out that Plutonium
was spilled (exploded) over a
decent amount of surface area local to the
Fukushima plant, we begin to be concerned
with our water supply, as increasing amounts of
radioactive Cesium 137 are appearing in our
food supplies. Here I write on the water topic:
1). What water should my family
and I drink?
If you drink bottled water, there are two
requirements for optimum health. Do not use
bottles of plastic, and DO use glass bottles.
One of the best brands is Mountain Valley.
For everyday, saving money, and ease of use,
Reverse osmosis is a great start. Then …. Read on.
To Save, I recommend an under-the sink
model by OxygenOzone Co. out of Los
Angeles. A basic water filtration of course you
need to use a minimum 5-micron carbon block
for the shower or countertop filter, - and if there
is a fair amount of dirt or
solids in the water, then
one needs to use a 5-micron
sediment filter before the
carbon to protect the
carbon block. This can be
used for washing the body,
brushing teeth or in the
kitchen for cleaning fruits
and vegetables. Ideally one
should install a filter (2-stage sediment carbon
or back-flush carbon tank) on the water coming
into the house so both hot and cold water
through the house is filtered.
IF you are looking for the cleanest highquality
water throughout the house then a
whole-house REVERSE OSMOSIS (RO)
system is used but this is expensive up front for
the cost of equipment plus intallation, and you
then use DOUBLE the water in the house as
one gallon produced to one gallon down the
drain to create the ultra-pure water.
Now the good stuff.
For DRINKING water, I advise ultrapurifying
the water with a system that uses
carbon, RO and DEIONIZATION resin filter to
create the ultra-pure water. This removes
radioactive particles (Cesium-137 and
Iodine-131 to name the most prevalent ones to
start) up to 95% or more. This removes all
possible carcinogens (cancer-causing elements)
known at this time. The best system I have
found not only creates Ultra-Pure water with
deionization, but adds back minerals from coral
calcium to create a perfect pure water that is
biologically compatible due to its equal
osmolarity with the fluids inside the body,
therefore preventing leaching of minerals such
as Selenium from the body, an essential cancerpreventive
trace mineral. Cancer patients are
low in selenium, since it is a catalyst to the
enzyme pathways that help bring a detoxification
of free-radicals and aid to the immune system.
OxygenOzone uses a Reverse Osmosis has
been used for decades, -if you want the ‘state of
the art’ complete under-the-sink system with
the additions of Ultraviolet to kill bacteria and
virus, and then, the Coral-Calcium tracemineral
filter that actually adds back the
essential minerals into the water to create water
that is balanced to your body. Warning: Reverse
Osmosis contains nearly NO minerals anymore,
so when you drink it, it can act as a vacuum and
pull essential minerals OUT of your body. I
recommend a trace-mineral complex, 2 per day,
you can find this at the health food store or at
our clinic (Aptos), and contains vital minerals
such as Selenium, Zinc, Manganese, Strontium
and more.
2). Can we take showers safely in the
regular tap water?
Showers have an added danger that the hot
water includes a small discharge of vapor, then
can be inhaled, going straight into the lungs and
circulatory system. Gases such as Chlorine
from chlorinated water are the worst, and
radiation-containing water is not really
contained yet in high amounts, if at all, in a
shower’s vapor. So, for right now and probably
in California for as long as we do not have a
local incident, showers are ok, but this situation
is changing rapidly as more reactors in
Fukushima melt down. BUT, purchase a
5-micron filter for your shower immediately.
3). How should we wash our hands?
With the water from the under-the sink RO
Deionization combination.
4). What about brushing our teeth;
shampooing hair, washing off your
contact lenses, etc.??
With the under-the sink RO Deionization
combination (the best, otherwise the carbon
filter will help much as long as you do not
ingest the water, AND I HIGHLY
RECOMMEND you follow the exposure with
our clinic-available TRI-Salts, a NON SODIUM
Page 12 ▲ The Connection Magazine ▲ www.ConnectionMagazineOnline.com ▲ June 2011
Bicarbonate powder mixed in the RO-DI water
and swallowed in ½ glass of water before bed.
This grabs radioactive elements and takes them
out of the body (and does not let them stay).
5). How about bathing babies?
Best of course is the RO-DI and then heat
the water—as infants AND pregnant women
are much more susceptible to radiation damage
than anyone else.
6). What water should I use to cook
pasta for my family and other food?
RO-DI
7). Can I open the windows in my
home? How long can I have them open?
Air is not the problem at this point. Check
www.fortifyhealth.com (our website) for everyday
monitoring of AIR quality/Geiger readings. If
the Counts per Minute are above 60, then
precautions need to occur. Nevertheless,
EVERYONE needs to take Antioxidant Pills
EVERY DAY. I recommend the ones we carry in
our clinic, by Designs for Health, or New Chapter
Antioxidant blend. Dose: 2-3 twic e a day.
8). Swimming in outdoor pools?
Besides inhalation of chlorine gas being
somewhat carcinogenic, after swimming the
best is to take a towel and wipe the skin at home
using the purified water.
9). Watering my plants?
This remains a problem. Spinach, Kale,
Arugula—greens are susceptible to radiation.
Our water, at least most of it unless you are
downstream from streams is fairly safe. How
safe, results are not out yet.
10). Soaking beans and other foods
that need to be soaked in water? This
should be done in RO-DI.
Radiation Information — Radiation Antidotes
Compiled by Kim Tunilla,
We are all living in a unique
situation: since March 11,
2011, Japan-Fukushima’s
nuclear power plants have been
releasing into the air currents (and rain)
and ocean currents—a massive amount
of radioactive substances. This will
ultimately have a toxic impact on our
entire planet, however, the region of
North America will get most of the
more concentrated exposure—and,
unfortunately, California is right up
there in the front lines.
The general media is not covering
the true signifi cance of the actual exposure
of radiation that we, in the United States,
are being exposed to. The information
that is below offers you the opportunity
to delve into research and data that will
allow you to become informed so that
you personally can make decisions to take
action to help protect your health.
First of all, what is going on?
The following websites will give
you an idea of what we are faced with
regarding exposure to radiation from
Fukkushima’s nuclear power plants.
This website is very valuable. It
offers a wide scope of information. It
goes into the concept of The Petkau Effect
which basically addresses the fact that
our greatest threat from radiation is the
radiation that we eat and breath-in. This
means that whatever radiation enters into
our bodies will be the greatest danger to
our health. The good news is that we can
take nutritional measures to help protect
our health. You will fi nd in the following
website ‘Short Term Radiation Antidotes
Regarding Iodine — here’s where
to go: Dr. David Brownstein, M.D. is
Need It, Why You Can’t Live Without It.
“The earthquake and tsunami hit
Japan on March 11, 2011. Let’s take
inventory of the situation. Is the nuclear
situation under control? No. Are we
being exposed to radioactive particles
from this disaster? Yes.
Are there things we can do to
protect ourselves? Yes.
What is amazing to me is how the
media has stopped reporting on this
story. Here we have a continuing meltdown
and release of radioactivity from
Japan and now there is literally nothing
being said about it.
Radioactive iodine has been found
in water and milk samples throughout
the U.S. In fact, many water supplies
from Los Angeles to Detroit have
tested positive for radioactive iodine.
But, keep in mind, the authorities
are not testing (or not reporting) for
contamination with radioactive cesium,
plutonium or uranium all of which have
a longer half-life than iodine.” Dr.
David Brownstein, M.D.
An Iodine supplement is very
important in helping to protect us from
radioactive Iodine-131, however that is
just one of the radioactive substances
that we need to protect ourselves from.
There are more radioactive substances
such as Cesium-137, Strontium-90,
Tellurium-132, Yttrium-91/90,
Americium-243/241, Barium-140,
Plutonium-244 and Uranium-235/234.
The following is a quote from doctorapsley.
com/RadiationTherapy.aspx:
“Cesium-137 will concentrate
in the fatty tissues, Iodine-131 in the
thyroid gland, breast tissues and ovaries,
Strontium-90 and Uranium-235/234 in
the bone, and Uranium-235/234 and
Plutonium-244 in the liver. Even to
this very day, the children in Belarus
are suffering from toxic overloads of
Cesium-137 in their bodies due to the
1986 Chernobyl incident. To avoid this,
these radioactive metals need to be
removed from the cells NOW”.
What this means is that you
have to make a decision– the decision
is to take special action now and to
nutritionally fortify your health.
RADIATION-AND-WHAT-TO-DO.aspx
This website gives a lot of valuable
information. Iodine is not the only thing
that will protect us. There are numerous
other radioactive substances that we
are potentially exposed to. Gabriel
Cousens, M.D. puts things together in
some easy to understand concepts. Here
are the key concepts (in other words
what else do we have to take to help
protect us from all the other radioactive
crap!).
The key concepts are take: 1)
Minerals, 2) Substances that chelate like
Zeolite and Clays (also note: seaweeds
provide minerals and they also chelate).
What does chelate mean: certain foods
actively draw the radioactive materials
to them and pull them out of the body
via the bowel and kidney excretion
process. 3) Antioxidant nutrients and
Enzymes—Why? Because radioactive
substances create free radicals and these
two kinds of nutrients will help protect
you from free radicals. 4) Chlorophyll
rich foods and Superfoods protect
against radiation.
5) Alkalize your diet and eat low
on the food chain (plant type foods
are best). I have very briefl y outlined
the above concepts. Please go to the
above website for much more detailed
information.
We are adapted to survive
mild exposures to
radiation. After all, the sun
is a kind of controlled nuclear bomb
and it releases a lot of radiation. Of
course, this radiation, and man-made
radiation, can also cause cancer and a
host of short- and long-term health
problems.
Whether you are worried about
the radiation from dental x-rays, a
mammogram, or fallout, here are
some Wise Woman Ways to help
you stay healthy. (If you are using
radioactive therapies in your cancer
treatment, there is a chapter full of
information specifi cally for you in
Breast Cancer~ Breast Health! The
Wise Woman Way.)
•Japanese researchers found that
diets high in carotenes signifi cantly
reduced DNA damage in humans
exposed to radiation. Supplements
of beta-carotene (or of vitamins C
or E) did not show this effect. Eating
lots of orange and dark green foods
(sweet potatoes, winter squash, beets,
carrots, kale, collards, chard, and
spinach, for example) can protect you
from radiation-induced cancers.
• Envision yourself and all your
cells protected from damage. (One
woman wrapped herself in psychic
lead.)
• Guinea pigs bombarded with
radiation lived a lot longer if they
ate broccoli or cabbage. All cabbage
family plants - including arugula,
turnips, radishes, caulifl ower,
mustard greens, bok choy, Brussels
sprouts, broccoli d’rappe, kale,
collards, and of course broccoli -
protect your cells from the damaging
effects of radiation.
• Choose an image, an icon,
something meaningful to you,
as a focusing agent. Put your
Surviving Radiation
The Wise Woman Way
affi rmations, blessings, prayers,
visualizations, and healing love
into it, for easy access when you
need help.
• Miso broth is the classic food
for prevention of radiation damage.
There’s twice the protection if a
quarter-ounce/5 grams of dried kelp
seaweed is added to the soup. In
scientifi c studies, seaweed was able
to neutralize radioactive isotopes
in the human body. Researchers at
McGill University say radioactive
strontium binds to the algin in
brown seaweeds to create sodium
alginate, a compound easily and
harmlessly excreted. Common black
tea exhibited the same anti-radiation
effects in several Japanese studies.
• In Fighting Radiation and
Chemical Pollutants with Foods,
Herbs, and Vitamins (Vitality,
1991), Steven Schecter tells us that
both black and green tea showed
“radioprotective effects” whether
taken before or after exposure to
radiation. Among other modes of
operation, tea catechins absorb
radioactive isotopes and remove
them from the body before they do
damage. The action is similar he says,
to that of sodium alginate (the “active
ingredient” in kelp seaweed).
• Eating any amount of reishii
(a mushroom) reduces damage from
radiation.
• St. Joan’s/John's Wort oil
protects my skin from radiation
damage. I use it as my only sunscreen
(and I am outside a lot) and fi nd it
not only immediately effective in
preventing and treating sunburn, but
even more protective with continuing
use over years.
• Burdock Root (Arctium lappa)
removes radioactive isotopes from the
body. A dose is 1-4 ounces/300-120
grams of cooked fresh root, up to a
pint of infusion daily, or several large
spoonfuls of vinegar (but only if
made with fresh roots).
• Dried beans, especially
lentils can reverse DNA damage
done by radiation. So can red clover
(Trifolium pratense) and astragalus
(Astragalus membranaceous) - two
powerful members of the legume
(bean) family.
• Homeopathic remedies can
be taken before and after exposure to
radiation: Plumbum (lead) is said to
help those who feel overwhelmed and
in need of protection. Belladonna is
used to prevent and relieve radiation
burns and pains - even long after the
immediate exposure.
Recipe for “Anti-Radiation
Easy Meal” is on page 308 in Breast
Cancer~ Breast Health! The Wise
Woman Way.
• Selenium protects DNA from
radiation damage and helps prevent
damage to the skin surface, too.
Get plenty of selenium by eating a
daily dose of 2 cups/500 ml of nettle
infusion, one-half ounce/15 g kelp,
2 ounces/60 g cooked burdock root,
or 1 cup/250 ml organic yogurt daily.
Shellfi sh, green and black teas, and
garlic contain signifi cant amounts of
selenium, as do many mushrooms.
The best sources however are nettles
(2200 mcg per 100 grams), kelp (1700
mcg/100 g), burdock (1400 mcg/100
• It’s important to keep yourself
A Vision of Green Growth for All
by Stuart Koster
Monterey Mattress, the local Sand City
purveyor of high quality mattresses and
bedding products, has long been
supporting the Arts and other worthy community
initiatives and events throughout Monterey County
through their highly respected Monterey Mattress
Marquee. Founders Brian Gingerich and his
father, master craftsman, Dale, are proud to
continue in the spirit of community service they
started so many years ago. Monterey Mattress
continues to find new ways to benefit the
communities it touches in the course of business.
Monterey Mattress has always
manufactured and distributed the highest
quality mattresses available in the US, and they
have now ‘greened’ their products. Their
products, now made with “natural, organic,
chemical-free and sustainable features,” are
sought after by the most prominent members of
the hospitality industry, including such wellknown
local hoteliers as the Portola Hotel and
Spa at Monterey Bay, Doris Day’s renowned
pet friendly Cypress Inn, Clint Eastwood’s
Mission Ranch and his private Tehama Golf
Resort, Big Sur’s Esalen Institute, one of the
leading human potential retreats in the world, as
well as over 100 other high quality hotels and
resorts in the region!
The business relation with each is
conducted with a vigilant eye to mutual benefit
beyond the product sold. For example, five years
ago Esalen Institute gave Monterey Mattress an
open purchase order for $25,000 to enable the
company to afford to begin buying materials to
develop an ‘organic bedding line’. This was
before there was enough of a market to afford
stocking such materials without charging
exorbitant prices. Monterey Mattress reciprocated
in kind by donating a large share of the value of
the new Natural Touch Organic Mattresses being
developed to Esalen so they could afford the
significantly nicer organic, green and sustainable
beds they wanted and deserved.
The Portola Hotel and Spa achieved a
Silver LEED (Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design, the verified rating
system for the US Green Building Council)
rating for their facility as an existing building
and for their operations and maintenance. This
award is a signal achievement; Portola Hotel
and Spa is one of only six in the whole United
States to be so rated. Monterey Mattress
recognized the importance of the endeavor
during construction, and upgraded Portola
Hotel & Spa’s existing order to the not yet quite
developed Green & Sustainable version to help
contribute to the effort. Brian’s team produced
the 600 upgraded mattresses with many of the
materials being airfreighted in to meet the
unbelievably short deadline of six weeks so that
Portola’s staff and guests could celebrate the
newly renovated hotel with their new Monterey
Mattresses in keeping with their new green
philosophy. The readers of The Connection
Magazine have the opportunity to share the
whole experience in the exciting sweepstakes
Monterey Mattress offers in their advertisement
in this edition (see back Cover)! You only live
once, and this is the way to live!
The Portola Hotel and Spa wants to share
their new digs, and Monterey Mattress wants to
celebrate its new alliance with Hanseatic
Bedding Products. Monterey Mattress has joined
forces with Hanseatic Bedding Products, Inc. as
Portola Hotel and Spa, one of only six Silver LEED certified hotels in the USA, is
proud to feature the Monterey Mattress Marquee 5 Diamond Bed Ensemble—resulting
from the new partnership between Hanseatic Bedding and Monterey Mattress.
their marketing and distribution arm. Hanseatic
Bedding also plans on partnering with Monterey
Mattress for their US domestic manufacturing.
Monterey Mattress was introduced to
Hanseatic Bedding when Chris Sommers, fresh
back from five years in Europe and new to a
management position at the Portola Hotel,
ordered down alternative mattress toppers from
them. Hanseatic Bedding, with Dr. Patrick
Habertag at the helm, is the largest supplier of
high-quality bedding products in Europe, and
they are very green in their manufacturing and
distribution. All three of the 5 Star resorts that
Chris had worked at during his time in Europe
used Hanseatic Bedding’s pillows, comforters,
mattress toppers and linens. Hanseatic Bedding
had previously been unable to enter the U.S.
market due to a non-competition clause with a
former partner and the Portola Hotel was their
first sale in the U.S. “Green is the right thing to
do,” stated Dr. Habertag, “and it is the only
right thing to do…” Hanseatic Bedding, a
family business since 1917, and having grown
to supplying retailers and over 750 mostly 5
Star resorts and hotels throughout Europe and
Asia, had thirty years of trouble entering the US
market while trying to find a US manufacturer
or distributor with similar views—Monterey
Mattress knew about the only right thing and, in
keeping with their strong small town Iowa
Amish and Mennonite roots, values of closeness
to the earth, the values of the Gingerich Family
tradition, had always known it. Monterey
Mattress now expects a very substantial
increase in business over the next five years,
and in order to meet projected US sales, will
need to increase their manufacturing capacity to
meet the anticipated demand for their ‘high
quality green mattresses and bedding’.
Conventional industrial development
considers the single bottom line as the chief
impetus to investment; would that single
consideration speak to someone who habitually
seeks to do “the right thing,” let alone “the only
right thing?” Brian Gingerich, most
consistently, proposes to grow his local business
in accord with the triple bottom line, and the
question never really surfaced. He is planning
to build a green factory adjacent to CSU-MB on
the Building 4900 site in the Fort Ord part of
Marina, and the considerations of people and
planet are being balanced with the profit
motive. The whole 18 acres will be green,
including the housing proffered to the 300 new
workers! A “Live-Work Eco-Village,” the very
concept, is driven systematically by
considerations of lived mutual benefit similar to
Page 15 ▲ The Connection Magazine ▲ www.ConnectionMagazineOnline.com ▲ June 2011
those driving business mutuality. And, a green
company will generate more profit for
everyone, from owner and workers to the
surrounding community.
Monterey Mattress Marquee is the very
strong right arm of Monterey Mattress, and as
Monterey Mattress grows and prospers, so too
will the community events, the music, the
culture, supported by that right arm. The
partnerships Monterey Mattress has formed
with the Monterey Mattress Marquee Media
Partners have generated the sponsorship of
Merle Haggard at Sherwood Hall for Shelters
Outreach Plus, Peggi Young (with husband Neil
Young), Laurie Anderson (with husband Lou
Reed), Patti Smith (at the Sunset Center doing
poetry and Gospel) Ramblin’ Jack Elliott (at the
Henry Miller Library, Al Jardine of The Beach
Boys, The White Album Ensemble with Santa
Cruz Symphony at SC Civic Center, The
Monterey Symphony, Terri Hendrix and Lloyd
Maines, Collin Gilmore, Champagne Sunday,
and Sand City’s West End Celebration. These
events are a few from the past; readers of The
Connection Magazine will be pleased to know
that Brian Gingerich and Monterey Mattress
will be sponsoring many more events for them
in the future. Green success for one will be
green benefit for the whole community.
Where Has All the Money Gone?
Author Advocates Analyzing School Budgets Using Brain Research Model
by Pattie Mills
A
FAMOUS KINGSTON
TRIO song asked where
have all the flowers, young
girls and young men gone? In this
edition of The Connection Magazine
devoted to children, coming out in
the midst of economic crisis, we
might well ask, “Where has all the
money gone for educating our
children?”
The poignant answer is, of
course, much of that money is gone.
However, there is enough to do the
job well. We’re just not spending it
well, meaning that it’s not being
spent in ways that recent brain
research suggests might provide a
bigger bang for our bucks.
The concept of using brain
research to help us make better
decisions when cutting our budgets
may seem pretty far out there. In
fact, many don’t believe brain
research has anything to tell us
about how to educate our children.
Period. But, they are dead wrong.
In a fascinating book, What
Brain Research Can Teach About
Cutting School Budgets
(books4educ.com), Karen D. Olsen
describes how to apply brain
research to cutting a school budget
in the areas of instructional tools,
organization and use of time,
staffing, professional development,
curriculum, testing, and more. The
book provides a brief summary of
key brain research most important to
each of the above areas and the
analytical tools needed for using that
information to analyze your school
spending patterns.
Does this sound wacky and
wild, preposterous and impractical?
No. The brain research is rock solid,
tested through the Highly Effective
Teaching (HET) model in thousands
of classrooms and schools
throughout this country and in
countries around the world for more
MORE THAN ONE
marriage has dissolved in
divorce due to conflicts
over child rearing—expectations and
methods. And, more than one child
has carried the scars of one extreme
or the other—overly strict or overly
permissive.
This is not an easy divide to
smooth over because each parent
holds his/her “philosophy” of child
rearing very strongly, a view that is
an extension of how that parent was
raised or a reaction to a painful
childhood and a deeply-held
commitment to raise one’s child
very differently.
Fortunately, recent brain
research makes “philosophies” of
childrearing irrelevant. The brain is
relevant; our philosophies about it
are irrelevant. Through the ages
these philosophies were simply
every-day attempts to capture our
intuitions and experiences into a
coherent tale that seemed to fit with
the times and could be passed on.
So, if you and your spouse are
struggling to find common ground
THERE IS SO MUCH
going on in this wonderful
& crazy world of ours.
And, “What about the kids?”
That is our THEME as whatever
is going on in our world affects
the kids even more intensely —
as they are developing, and
growing — physically, mentally,
emotionally, ... in every way.
With so many issues to
relate, we will continue to do so
in our ongoing “Parenting, Kids
& Education” Column. In this
Theme, we start with excellent
information regarding
‘Education’ — initially,
addressing the issue of money
AND can the system do more
with less??? What do kids need
to develop character, confidence,
integrity? Is parenting involved?
And, the best educational training
And, again, ... “what about
How Dangerous Are Junk Food Ads To Our Kids?
by John Robbins
We worry so much about the
many dangers to our
children, like drugs and
pedophiles and violence. But we often
take for granted what might very well be
the largest danger of all to our kids: the
hundreds of billions of dollars spent each
year on ads designed to get them hooked
on junk food.
That’s why I think it’s important that
this month more than 550 health
professionals and organizations signed an
open letter to McDonald’s, imploring the
fast food giant to stop marketing junk food
to kids. Many major metropolitan
newspapers across the country are running
full-page ads featuring the letter.
The letter doesn’t so go far as to ask
McDonald’s to stop selling junk food to
kids. It only asks them to stop aggressively
advertising such foods to children.
Will it make any difference?
Critics say the campaign, organized
by the nonprofit watchdog group
“Corporate Accountability International,” is
just another attempt to undercut consumer
freedom, just another effort by the food
police to dictate what you and your
children can eat.
McDonald’s food may be junk, say
such critics, but it’s a personal choice. No
one is physically forcing children to eat Big
Macs. Where are parents anyway? Why
don’t they assume their authority and take
responsibility? Are they just looking for
someone other than themselves to blame
because their kids are fat and unhealthy?
No one, not even McDonald’s, doubts
that we are witnessing an escalating epidemic
of obesity and diet-related disease in children.
In 1971, only 4% of 6-to-11-year-old kids
were obese. By 2004, the figure had more
than quadrupled, to nearly 20%, with nearly
40% now considered overweight. A lack of
exercise probably isn’t the cause of the
increase, because many studies show that
exercise levels in kids haven’t changed much
in the past few decades. What, then, lies at
the root of the crisis?
We know that kids in the U.S.
today consume more calories, and
more junk food, than any similarlyaged
population in the history of the
world. But why, and who is responsible?
McDonald’s places the blame for
the situation squarely on the shoulders
of parents. The problem, they say, is a
breakdown in parental responsibility.
I am a staunch advocate for personal
freedom and parental responsibility, which,
you may be surprised to hear, is in fact
precisely why I stand with the health
professionals on this one. You see, there is
a major problem with the marketing of
junk food to malleable kids that is almost
never recognized.
It is this: The ads are almost
deliberately designed to compromise
parental authority. The industry calls it
“the pester factor.” The PR companies who
produce these ads speak happily of making
kids “obnoxious,” of getting them to “drive
their parents crazy.”
The idea is to get kids to want junk
food so much that they nag their parents to
take them to McDonald’s, and to buy them
other foods they have seen advertised,
eventually breaking down parents’
resistance. In
the face of the
relentless
barrage of such
advertisements,
how many
parents are able
to hold their
ground?
Is this one
John Robbins
of the chief
reasons there has
been such a
pervasive loosening of parental rules
regarding food? Confronted with a constant
stream of ads for junk food, and its nearly
ubiquitous availability, parental authority
around food issues has often declined to the
point of becoming parental resignation.
The “pester factor” has enormous
economic implications, as well.
Advertisers estimate that one out of three
fast food trips take place as a result of a
child’s nagging.
The marketing strategy is effective,
but it’s insidious. Traditionally, it has been
parents who have taken leadership in
deciding what their kids are going to eat.
But McDonald’s and other fast food
companies spend billions of dollars a year
on ad campaigns that target children, with
the goal of taking that leadership away
from the parents, and shifting it onto the
kids themselves. In this way, the ads not
only promote the consumption of junk
food, with all the baneful health
consequences we are witnessing today.
What may be even worse is that at the
same time the aggressive marketing of
junk food undermines parental authority.
The continual onslaught of such ads leads
the parents to feel like bad guys for not
giving kids what they want, and erodes the
respect that parents receive from their kids.
To make the ads even more dubious,
young children are not capable of
understanding that the advertising is
intended to manipulate their feelings and
alter their behavior. Given that children
can’t comprehend the persuasive intent
behind ads, is it ethical to advertise to them
foods that are conclusively proven to be
unhealthy? Should it even be legal?
Calling on McDonald’s CEO and
President, Jim Skinner, to “stop marketing
junk food to kids,” the letter was signed by a
veritable who’s who of luminaries in the
world of healthy eating and disease
prevention, including authors Andrew Weil
and T. Colin Campbell. Other signators
include David L. Katz, Director of Yale
Prevention Research Center and editor-inchief
of Child Obesity; Robert S. Lawrence,
director of the Center for a Livable Future,
Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public
Health; Marion Nestle, Paulette Goodard
professor in the Department of Nutrition,
Food Studies and Public Health, and
professor of Sociology, New York
University; and Walter Willett, chairman of
the Department of Nutrition, Harvard
School of Public Health. The letter states:
“As health professionals
engaged directly in the largest
preventable health crisis facing this
country, we ask that you stop
marketing junk food to children.
The rates of sick children are
staggering. Ballooning health care
costs and an overburdened health care
system make treatment more difficult
than ever. And we know that reducing
junk food marketing can significantly
improve the health of kids.
Our community is devoted to
caring for sick children and
preventing illness through public
education. But our efforts cannot
compete with the hundreds of
millions of dollars you spend each
year directly marketing to kids.
Today, our private practices,
pediatric clinics, and emergency
rooms are filled with children
suffering from conditions related to
the food they eat. In the decades to
come, one in three children will
develop type 2 diabetes as a result
of diets high in McDonald’s-style
junk food, according to the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention.
This generation may be the first in
U.S. history to live shorter lives
than their parents.
The rise of health conditions like
diabetes and heart disease mirrors
the growth of your business –
growth driven in large part by
children’s marketing…
While acknowledging that fast food
is unhealthy, you pin responsibility
for the epidemic of diet related
disease on a breakdown in parental
responsibility…
Even when parents resist the
‘nag effect’ cultivated by
McDonald’s to access the $40 – 50
billion in annual purchases that
children under 12 control,
advertising creates brand loyalties
that persist into adulthood…
We ask that you… retire your
marketing promotions for food high
in salt, fat, sugar, and calories to
children... “
Will it do any good?
The day after the full-page ads began
appearing in newspapers across the
country, McDonald’s CEO Jim Skinner
made a public statement in response.
Citing no evidence, he claimed that parents
and customers were calling on him “to
defend their right to choose.” But the
doctors and other health professionals who
signed the letter were not asking
McDonald’s to stop selling junk food, only
to stop advertising it to children.
McDonald’s claims the company is
doing enough already, by being part of the
Children’s Food and Beverage Advertising
Initiative. But how effective is this
program? It’s an entirely voluntary pledge,
with absolutely no enforcement
mechanism, produced by representatives
from Burger King, Coco-Cola, Hershey,
Mars, Nestle, and PepsiCo, along with
McDonald’s. As you can imagine, the
“pledges” made by various companies
under the Initiative have stemmed the tide
of marketing junk food to kids about as
effectively as the New Orleans levees
stemmed the tide of Hurricane Katrina.
McDonald’s CEO Jim Skinner,
whose take-home pay in 2009 was more
than $17 million, insists the company will
not budge.
But there is a precedent that suggests
the full-page ad campaign might yet have an
effect. Up until 2008, it was not uncommon
for school report cards to carry the Golden
Arches logo, offering a free Happy Meal to
elementary school children who got good
grades. McDonald’s ended the program
when the practice was noticed and a
sufficiently irate public outcry ensued.
By shining a spotlight of attention on
the impact McDonald’s advertising has on the
health of our kids, this campaign just might
take a bite out of the happy, kid-friendly
façade that the company has worked so hard
to cultivate. After all, how kid-friendly is it to
aggressively market products to kids which
take a catastrophic toll on our children’s
can go to press without a
discussion about “discipline” in the
classroom. The usual language for
this topic revolves around “rules”
and how strictly they should be
enforced, about the dichotomies of
zero tolerance or permissiveness,
about externally imposed
punishment and rewards versus
internally monitored and controlled
behavior.
This is no small deal because,
as brain research makes clear,
emotion is the gatekeeper to
learning and performance. And,
behavior is but a small part of this.
If you’re a teacher and want to
know more about how to create a
secretary for preparedness and
response at the DHHS, recently
requested that the National
Biodefense Science Board submit an
evaluation of safety issues related to
testing the anthrax vaccine on
children. The DHHS frames the
possible testing as an issue of
biodefense preparedness. However,
the possibility of pediatric testing of
the vaccine both ignores the
vaccine’s dangers, and raises the
specter of class—and/or race-based
selection of medical test subjects
which has haunted US health
agencies for over a century.
Even in the months in 2001
when letters containing anthrax were
mailed to several congressional
leaders, heightening national fears
during the post-9/11 period, Bill
First, a physician and then-Senate
Majority Leader, urged caution in
use of the anthrax vaccine. He told
CNN: “There are very real and
potentially serious side effects from
the vaccine and anyone who elects
to receive the vaccine needs to be
made aware of that. I do not
recommend widespread inoculation.
There are too many side effects and
if there is limited chance of
exposure—the side effects would far
outweigh any potential advantage.”
A 2007 report by the CDC,
along with the Vaccine Healthcare
Centers of the Department of
Defense and the watchdog group
Government Accountability
estimated that “between 1 and 2
If a vaccine with this kind of
reputation is to be tested on children,
one has to wonder which children. It
is fairly certain those young test
subjects won’t be the offspring of
high-ranking government officials or
corporate vice presidents and CEOs.
The history of medical testing
carries a taint of racism, classism
and opportunism, as health officials
select those with less education and
fewer choices to be unwitting guinea
pigs in medical experiments
supposedly in the name of scientific
advancement.
Are American Children To Be Used
In Medical Experiments To Test Anthrax Vaccine?
tested on children, one has
to wonder which children.
the subjects’ bodies.
Vaccine testing has its own
special place in the annals of this
kind of integrity-free medical
research. In the early 1960s,
mentally disabled children at
a residential state school in
New York were deliberately
infected with viral hepatitis
so that they could be test
subjects for the disease.
A 1978 CDC test for a
hepatitis B vaccine which
sought “promiscuous
homosexual male” volunteers
has some interesting
connections to both HIV and
the previously rare opportunistic
diseases associated with the AIDS
virus. As recently as 1990, the CDC
and Kaiser Pharmaceuticals gave
1,500 black and Hispanic 6-month
old infants an unlicensed measles
vaccine without the approval and
consent of their parents. (For more
Vaccines, Autism, Our Children,
. . . the Truth?!?
AMERICAN
PROSECUTORS are
attempting to extradite a
Danish Scientist.
Poul Thorsen has been charged
with 13 counts of wire fraud and
nine counts of money laundering; a
federal grand jury alleges that
Thorsen stole over $1 million from
autism research funding between
February 2004 and June 2008.
Thorsen is said to have used the
proceeds to buy a home in Atlanta,
two cars and a Harley Davidson. He
is said to have stolen the money
while serving as the ‘principal
investigator’ for a program that
studied the relationship between
autism and exposure to vaccines.
The Copenhagen Post reports:
“... Over the four-year period
he submitted over a dozen false
invoices from the CDC for research
expenses to Aarhus University,
where he held a faculty position,
instructing them to transfer the
funds to a CDC account, which was
in fact his personal account ...
Thorsen’s research on autism is
widely known in academic circles,
where he was until this week a
highly respected figure. A paper of
his on the subject, which is known as
‘The Danish Study’, is quoted
extensively to refute the autism
vaccine connection.”
Another prominent name in
vaccine medicine, Dr. Paul Offit,
well-known shill for the vaccine
industry, has also been called out for
making false and unsubstantiated
statements about CBS News
Investigative Correspondent Sharyl
Attkisson and her report looking into
the ties between vaccine supporters
and the vaccine industry. According
to Adventures in Autism:
“Upon further review, it
appears that a number of Dr. Offit’s
statements, as quoted in the OC
Register article, were
unsubstantiated and/or false.
Attkisson had previously reported on
the vaccine industry ties of Dr. Offit
and others in a CBS Evening News
report ‘How Independent Are
Vaccine Defenders?’”
The unsubstantiated statements
included a claim that Attkisson
“lied”, and a claim that CBS News
sent a “mean spirited and
vituperative” email. Offit also told
the OC Register that he provided
CBS News “the details of his
relationship ... with pharmaceutical
company Merck”, but documents
provided by CBS News indicate
Offit did not disclose all of his
financial relationships with Merck.
When two of the biggest names
in vaccine research and support turn
out to be guilty of fraud, major
calls into question the validity of
their work on the vaccine front …
and that’s putting it mildly.
Yet, this news has only been
Countless American parents are
lives, in the hands of the U.S.
Centers of Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) and the American
Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) every
time they vaccinate their children.
Yet, two of the CDC’s “go-to guys”
have now been caught red-handed
lying and, in the case of Dr. Poul
Thorsen, committing outright fraud.
This includes:
● Dr. Poul Thorsen, who was
the CDC uses to support their
claims that MMR and mercurycontaining
Practical Tips for Preventing Childhood Obesity
CHILDHOOD OBESITY is a
growing epidemic in the U.S.
It accounts for 17 percent of
children and adolescents aged 2-19
years, based on the 2007-2008
National Health and Nutrition
Examination Survey (NHANES).
However, obesity is a
preventable condition. More
importantly, it’s something you can
help your children avoid by taking
simple measures.
A new national study published
on EurekAlert! reveals what you can
do to decrease the risk of obesity in
children. It points out some routines
you can practice in your own home:
● Eat dinner together as a family
● Ensure that your child is getting
enough sleep
● Reduce your child’s television
viewing time
Aside from these 3 household
routines, Dr. Joseph Mercola, a
natural health expert, suggests these
tips for maintaining your kids’
healthy weight:
● Keep fructose intake under 25
grams per day. Dr. Mercola
points out that “fructose is the
number one source of calories in
America and it is very clear that
it is a primary cause of the obesity
epidemic.” As such, he recommends
eliminating soda and
dramatically reducing fruit juices
and foods that are high in
fructose from your children’s
diet.
● Modify your child’s diet according
to his/her Nutritional Type.
Choose foods that are “right for
your biochemistry, so they will
naturally push your body toward
its ideal weight,” says Dr.
Mercola. It is important to
include high-quality, organic
meats and veggies in your child’s
diet in order to provide him/her
with vital nutrients. Also supplement
with krill oil, which is rich
in Omega-3 fats that are critical
to your child’s brain function, IQ,
and overall optimal health.
● Encourage your kids to get regular
exercise. Incorporating various
types of physical activity
into your child’s routine, which
can be as simple as walking,
bike-riding, or playing tennis,
can be helpful in weight management.
To instill these healthy habits,
Dr. Mercola believes parents need to
model these behaviors in order to
serve as good role models for their
children. The Connection Magazine
will address obesity in the Parenting
Column in the July ’11 issue.
“THE MYTH OF IRRECONCILABLE DIFFERENCES”
by Joyce and Barry Vissell
In a court of law, if both partners
of a married couple claim they
have irreconcilable differences, the
court will grant them a legal divorce
– without even asking what the differences
are!
Joyce and I, on the other hand,
having worked with thousands of
couples over the last 37 years, challenge
that there is no such thing as
irreconcilable differences. We have
seen that ANY difference can be not
only tolerated, but even appreciated.
But that takes real understanding and a
commitment to love.
So what constitutes grounds for
separation or divorce? It’s not the differences
themselves. You will end up
separating or divorcing if you choose
not to try to understand them. Your
relationship will end if you choose
not to look inside to better understand
yourself, as well as your partner.
Differences are not the problem.
Secrecy, cruelty, active addictions and
infi delity are hurtful and can be grounds
for divorce if either partner refuses to
get help.
During the romantic, early stages
of relationship, most couples experience
little diffi culty with differences,
even big ones. Their wide open hearts
fi nd enough room to embrace their differences.
We once saw a liberal democratic
woman in love with a conservative
republican man. Their explanation?
“We love each other enough to agree
to disagree!”
When you’re in love, you easily
understand how opposites attract. The
differences in your lover don’t bother
you. Their messiness or neatness, their
introversion or extraversion, their love
of the outdoors or their love of the
indoors, their raw food vegan or steak
and potatoes diet, these don’t seem to
detract from the love you experience
together. They may even be “cute”
to you.
It is only later, after the honeymoon
glow has faded, and each of your
egos and personalities have powerfully
come on the scene,
that differences get
magnified and can
grate on you.
The question
then is: How do you
solve the problem of
differences? One thing is for sure. It
will never work to try to change your
partner! Sure, you may correct bad habits.
Early in our marriage, Joyce took a
fi rm stand against my messiness. Just
because I never used a vacuum cleaner
in the fi rst 22 years of my life, it simply
wasn’t acceptable to her at the time that
I didn’t help her clean the apartment.
Did I change? Yes. Sometimes she
laughs at how fastidious I can now be.
On a more serious note, I have
had diffi culty with Joyce’s sensitivity.
Sometimes I’ll give her what seems to
me a small correction, and she’ll feel
criticized and hurt. I remember one
time, long ago, when I complained
about her sensitivity. She said to me,
“Barry, you could have married a man
who is just like you.” Her point was well
taken. Now I am deeply grateful for her
sensitivity. Perhaps more than anything
else, her sensitivity has caused me to
develop my own sensitivity.
Our religious difference—me being
raised Jewish and Joyce Protestant
—nearly destroyed our relationship in
our early years. We tried to change one
another. We had many arguments about
religion. After two years, we deliberately
transferred to different colleges
to get away from each other. We tried
dating persons of our same religion. It
just wasn’t working. All the differences
were only in our minds. In our hearts,
there was a love big enough to embrace
all our differences.
Finally we decided to get married.
My childhood Rabbi was extremely discouraging.
Joyce’s minister, Reverend
Davis, agreed to marry us on one condition.
He said, “I will only marry you if
you promise never to try to change each
other. It is the differences between you
that will help you to most grow.” In a
way, he was our fi rst spiritual teacher,
giving advice that has helped us to
this day.
Our early marriage was still not
easy. Although we understood about not
changing each other, religion was still
a difference we were trying to tolerate.
What really helped was a deeply soulful
search for a spirituality that we could
share. We started with Transcendental
Meditation, Hatha Yoga, Sufi Dancing,
and Ram Dass’ book, Be Here Now,
traveled the world in search of spiritual
teachers, and studied a wide variety of
spiritual paths, including the roots and
origins of Judaism and Christianity.
We searched for, and found, spiritual
similarities that we shared, practices
we could do together. Our favorite at
the moment is very simple: we touch
our foreheads together and take turns
speaking a prayer from the heart—an
expression of gratitude, asking for
ways to be of service on this planet,
as well as asking for help with current
challenges.
Yes, Joyce and I have our own
spirituality, our own practices. Is one
method better than the other? Absolutely
not. If it brings inner joy, peace,
and respect for all life, it doesn’t matter
what the practice.
Yet as a couple, we make it a priority
to share sacred moments, whether it
is the praying together, sitting side by
side meditating in silence, appreciating
one another, practicing sacred sexuality,
or celebrating the beauty of nature.
It really doesn’t matter how different
two people are if: one, those
differences are respected and two, the
similarities are found and celebrated.
Over the years we have observed that
couples must have or create a common
link, a unifying quality, something that
is deeply shared. If the deeper focus is
on what you have in common, your differences
become background, and thus
are more easily embraced and loved. If
you focus on your unity, your diversity
will challenge you to grow. Celebrate
your similarities, and you will learn to
celebrate your differences.
FENG SHUI FOR REAL ESTATE
by Megan Montero
Are you trying to sell your
home? Are you wondering if it
will ever sell? Applying Feng
Shui to your property can increase
your chances of a sale and help the
process run smoothly. Feng Shui will
help your property stand out and can
correct energies that may be keeping
buyers away.
Feng Shui teaches us that our
homes directly correlate with what
is happening in our lives. When we
change things in our home, it can
change things in our life. Some fl oor
plans and inauspicious events like a
suicide, bankruptcy or divorce can
create negative energies that could
keep prospective buyers away.
One of my clients describes best
how Feng Shui can help sell a property,
“My wife and I have bought and
sold seven houses over the years, and
working with Megan Montero brought
about the easiest, quickest sale of a
home ever. Our home had been on
the market with little movement in
a depressed market. We decided to
work with Megan to make our home
When conceiving three onewoman
theater pieces about
an African-American girl in
1890’s all-negro town in Kansas (currently
being performed at the Pacifi c
Cultural Center), I knew hundreds
of people would be involved behind
the scenes, and the real messages and
beauty would emerge from the viewers
themselves. After every show, our
theater company opens up a ‘sharing’
from the audience, allowing them to
speak their thoughts, comments, and
questions.
The plays themselves touch on
universal themes that evoke childhood,
adolescence, love, loss, hardship, and
transformation. The viewers deepen
these themes, exploring the controversial
aspects of each play; racism and
discrimination, spiritual differences and
parental/societal disapproval, violence
and hate, and the personal path through
it all. By listening to each person, we
see the divergence and similarities of
perspectives while practicing hearing
multiple points of view without judging
each other.
This ‘sharing’ has become the
most important part of the evening for
more appealing to prospective buyers.
Through her work and completing
the recommendations prescribed, we
received an offer shortly for a cash
purchase and a two-week closing.
When we balked at the quickness of
the closing (We had hoped 2 months),
the buyer said that we could stay in our
home rent-free for 2 and half months.
The buyer did not ask for any concessions
on our part.”
Feng Shui tips that will help you
fi nd a buyer:
• Work on the entrance to the
building. It will be diffi cult for the Chi
that brings opportunities and your new
buyer to fi nd you if the front door is
hard to locate. Flags, lights, painting
the door red and plants in colorful pots
are ways to invite the Chi to your door.
If your eye is attracted to the front
door, so will the opportunities and your
prospective buyers. Do not crowd the
space around the door, make sure it is
easy to get to and that it can open all
the way. Keep the entrance clean and
the landscaping looking healthy.
• Clear your clutter. Really go
through your stuff and let it go. You
our theater company, Rising Sun Dance
& Theater. We believe that the stage
is not a platform from which to spout
one’s opinion, but a place to spark community
dialogue on the issues we need
to discuss. Artists serve as messengers
bringing hope, insight, and understanding
to their viewers, honing their talents
and techniques into powerful, effective
tools for uniting and transforming the
communities and societies around them
to help humanity dwell harmoniously
on a vibrant, healthy planet.
In the months to come, as we
train other actors of many ethnicities
to perform the plays and visit schools,
churches, and other communities, we
are also developing workshops and
discussion group formats to open
conversation on the issues of racism,
discrimination, spiritual and religious
understanding and tolerance, personal
transformation, and the role of the
expressive voice in societal transformation.
This is not a solo project. (And
I write this with a big grin.) The solo
shows “A Star Called Love” actually
involve over a thousand people, and
this is an ever-growing number. We are
looking for people to teach workshops,
host this experience, connect us with
want fl ow and space in your rooms,
around the furniture and in the closets.
Flow equals wealth, opportunities and
the right buyer.
• Do whatever you can to emotionally
let go of your property.
One of my clients was very sad about
leaving his home of 20 years even
though his new home was beautiful
and on the water. He was holding
onto it emotionally and the home was
not selling. Once he said goodbye to
the old home and acknowledged his
excitement about his new home, he
immediately received a good offer,
and his home sold!
Applying these Feng Shui tips
may be all the help you need to get
your property sold. If you are really
motivated to sell your property, call me
for a thorough Feng Shui evaluation.
FROM DRY TO RAW
by Bonnie Blumenfeld
What if I want to change
my dog’s food from dry
to raw? How do I do
that? from Jeena Baines, Aptos
Thanks for asking, Jeena, and
thanks for wanting to do the best for
your canine friend.
Countless dog and cat owners
have seen the benefi ts of feeding a
raw diet: shinier coats, fresh breath,
less itching, cleaner teeth, clean ears,
brighter eyes, better energy.
Why raw? Cooking destroys
many of the things that make meat an
ideal diet for our companions; it denatures
protein and collagen; it destroys
many nutrients and enzymes and vitamins,
makes food less digestible and
less biologically available. There are
a few diseases which do not do well
with raw food diets, but relatively few.
If your animal has some serious health
issue, you should discuss this with a
holistic vet knowledgeable about raw
food diets, before proceeding. However,
it has been my experience, after
years of dealing with raw food diets,
that taking control of your animal’s
diet often improves health problems.
Having said that, you do need to
know what you are doing! Although it
does not have to be complicated, there
are some basics you have to learn. You
can’t just throw your dog some meat
and a bone and call it dinner! It is a
larger topic than we have time for now,
but today let’s talk about some ways
to get started.
For starters—read a good book.
There are lots out there, and they are
not all created equal. I’d be happy to
make some suggestions in a future
column.
My next suggestion is to try one
of the frozen raw commercial diets
that can be found in many pet stores.
It’s a good way to see if your dog (or
cat) likes a raw diet. Most dogs—not
a problem! They almost universally
are so thrilled to be eating real food
instead of pieces of dry kibble out of
a bag—it’s party time! Check preferences—do
they like beef? Chicken?
Turkey? Venison, buffalo, lamb, duck,
salmon—there’s a lot of choice. Which
is a good thing —variety is important;
you don’t want to be feeding the same
thing all the time. Not only because
it is boooring, but because you want
to cover as many nutritional needs as
possible. It’s a good way to make the
switch without worrying if you are
including everything that they need;
then decide if you want to make your
own.
Other
things to check
for, according
to your preferences:Organic?
Complete
and balanced,
or needs supplementation? Grains or
grain-free? Ground bones, or give real
bones as well?
Many dogs make the switch
without any problem, but you can
transition by replacing some of her
regular diet with some of the raw, and
add a little more each day, for about
a week. I would also suggest adding
enzymes into the diet. Enzymes are
the little critters that break food down
into nutrition, and it will help to avoid
intestinal upsets. Check the pet stores
for good brands. Give them with every
meal, for a number of months. I give
them to my animals all the time—another
discussion. If at any time your
animal develops diarrhea, back up a
bit and go slower.
Make sure to use safe meat-handling
and sanitation practices always!
Raw meat will stay for 3 days in an
airtight container in the fridge; mix
back in any blood after it defrosts—it’s
loaded with nutrients. Don’t nuke it!
Good luck, and have fun!
At The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk:
There was excitement in the air as
an estimated 30,000 fans waited patiently at
The Boardwalk Stage for James Durbin to
arrive. From young to old went crazy yelling
for Durbin when he arrived. Unfortunately,
he was only allowed to sing three songs
ending with Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing”
which has turned into James’ theme song
after performing it on American Idol. He
reminded everyone “Don’t Stop Believing” in
him, but more importantly them selves. Many
fans really thought he would be #1, but no
need to worry, this performer will have a long
successful music career ahead of him. Best
wishes to you always, James!
ilarious and wonderfully witty, this female-
Hdriven comedy is in a league of its own.
Brilliant dialogue and engaging performances,
along with original if not fairly whacky characters,
push this toward a new genre of raunchy
female comedy. The piece that doesn’t fi t, and
you might want to tune out completely, is the
bathroom humor scene in the bridal store—truly
not necessary; why go there in an otherwise
exceptional screenplay? Otherwise, there are
many tender and meaningful moments, in addition
to the inspired humor. Not a chick-fl ick
played their intense, hard driving originals to
a very responsive crowd.
At Seabright Brewery: I loved seeing
them, and some will hang from them. But this is
one of the better installments. Depp’s rendition of
Captain Jack Sparrow, famously inspired by Keith
Richards (and cartoon character Pepe Le Pew),
continues to delight. It’s more swishbuckling
than swashbuckling? These roots make a clever
cameo appearance by Keith Richards himself,
as Jack’s father. Penelope Cruz defi nitely adds
a much-needed feisty “feminine touch” to the
business of being a pirate. Here, mermaids take
on a whole other dimension in amazing and fairly
disturbing sequences. Overall, less undead and
more life-affi rming and full of intrigue ... the franchise
has redeemed itself! (2 hr 17 min).
psychic reading can spark inspiration, creativity and
expensive. Don’t miss the opportunity to connect
with local readers in an affordable way. The 20
minute readings allow you to sample a variety of
different practitioners for an affordable price.
Here are a few recommendations for getting
the most out of a psychic reading from Lisa Giles,
a psychic clairvoyant and founder of Litha Faire,
who has been practicing in the Santa Cruz area for
over 20 years.
First of all, the future is not written in stone.
We look into the future to see possible outcomes
and potential futures. A reader will then look at the
energies currently fl owing in your life that are shaping
your future. Your point of power exists between
fate and free will. By understanding the nature of
these two forces, you can manifest what you want
in this lifetime.
I always begin with an overview and look at a
“picture” of a client’s present life circumstances. I
then move on to what is “working” and what is not
in their life. I encourage people to ask questions as
they come up, or I can focus on the specifi c issue.
Since readings are usually much shorter at a psychic
fair, you want to get the most out of your reading.
I recommend formulating one or two questions to
ask your reader in advance. Never be afraid to ask
a reader to clarify on an answer if the information is
not clear to you. Many psychics receive information
clairvoyantly in the form of pictures and images. We
then relay the information to you. This is an ideal
opportunity for the client and reader to discuss and
interpret the messages and imagery the psychic
receives. We want to ensure that you understand
the information that is coming through in the reading
and nothing is lost in translation.
As with any other occupation, psychics often
have a specialty, some are master tarot readers,
clairvoyants, clairaudients, clairsentients, mediums,
pet communicators, and the list goes on. Most of
us are profi cient in several methods of psychic
communication. However, we have our favorite
methods and techniques. I like to say that each of
us has our own unique psychic signature. Please
feel free to ask the psychics about their readings;
this will help you to choose the psychic and the
reading that will be most helpful to you. Psychics at
Litha Faire are some of the best practitioners of the
intuitive arts and have been vetted for their ethics
and quality of readings, so please take advantage
of their knowledge and abilities.
Join us in the Bayview Sunroom for free
lectures on a variety of topics to assist you on your
spiritual quest. Topics will include, etheric healing,
working with the Law of Attraction, the Qabalah and
Tarot, and more. The readings help you to enlighten
your life’s path along with issues and blockages that
may be preventing you from living the life you desire.
The lectures will help to provide you with the tools
to transform yourself and begin manifesting the life
you want to live.
Don’t forget to visit the fairy garden and make
a Midsummer wish before you leave the faire! This
will ensure the magic of Midsummer will remain in
your heart throughout the year!
Life doesn’t have to be ordinary, it can be
PROTECT YOURSELF FROM TOXIC CHEMICALS
by Linda Chaé
We’ve all read about increases
in allergies and skin conditions
like eczema that seem
to be increasing everywhere. The question
is “What’s causing this and how
can I protect myself and my family?”
Well, here’s a little known secret – a lot
of the cause may be the very products
you’re exposed to in your own home.
Now, that doesn’t make a lot of
sense, but if we examine the ingredients
on the personal and skin care products
we use, we’ll fi nd a wide range
of toxic ingredients in many of them
– including things like sodium laurel
or laureth sulphate, parabens, PEGs,
fragrance, colors and dyes. Does that
matter? It does if you start every day
by slathering on products fi lled with
toxins. Recent studies suggest that
we touch over 300 toxic chemicals
before we leave the bathroom in the
morning.
And don’t forget that if your home
has carpets and upholstered furniture, it
probably contains chemicals like formaldehyde,
glues, and other toxins. Add
that to paints and varnish fi nishes and
you have a cocktail of toxins to impact
your health – and your skin may be the
fi rst place it appears.
So, how do I start ‘cleaning out’
the offending items? You can easily
begin to change out products with
simple, small steps. Begin by reading
the labels on every
An “ideal beauty” is an entity which is
admired, or possesses features widely
attributed to beauty in a particular
culture, for perfection.
The experience of “beauty” often
involves the interpretation of some
entity as being in balance and harmony
with nature, which may lead to feelings
of attraction and emotional well-being.
Because this is a subjective experience,
it is often said that “beauty is in the eye
of the beholder.” In its most profound
sense, beauty may engender a salient
experience of positive refl ection about
the meaning of one’s own existence.
A subject of beauty is anything that
resonates with personal meaning.
A ripe fruit (of its time) was
considered beautiful, whereas a young
woman trying to appear older or an
older woman trying to appear younger
would not be considered beautiful. In
Attic Greek, hōraios had many meanings,
including “youthful” and “ripe
old age.”
The characterization
of a person
as “beautiful”...
is often based on
some combination
of Inner Beauty,
which includes
psychological factors
such as personality,
intelligence,
grace, politeness,
charisma, integrity,
congruence and elegance,
and Outer
Beauty, (i.e. physical
attractiveness)
which includes
physical factors,
such as whatever
you perceive it to
be.
on Immunization Practices (ACIP). ACIP is
a 15-member panel of immunization
experts, selected by the Secretary of the
U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services. They provide advice and guidelines
to the CDC on vaccine-preventable
diseases.
CDC Vaccine Researcher Charged with
Wire Fraud, Money Laundering & Stealing
Grant Money
Dr. Poul Thorsen is most widely known for
a 2003 study known as the “Danish Study,”
which reported there was a 20-fold increase in
autism in Denmark after mercury-based
preservatives like thimerosal were banned from
vaccines. The research team therefore concluded
that mercury-containing vaccines were safe.
The CDC has relied on the Danish Study
to “prove” their case that MMR vaccine and
mercury are safe for your kids.
Now, a federal grand jury in Atlanta has
indicted Thorsen and charged him with 13 counts
of wire fraud, 9 counts of money laundering and
stealing more than $1 million in grant money
from the CDC over a four-year period.
It turns out that Thorsen was reportedly
submitting fraudulent invoices with fabricated
expenses to the CDC, and using the money to
purchase cars, a motorcycle, a home and
cashier’s checks.
Thorsen’s research on autism is widely
known in academic circles, where he was until
very recently a highly respected figure.”
CDC Gives Nearly $15 Million to
Thorsen’s Research Center
Thorsen’s research center, the North
Atlantic Epidemiology Alliances (NANEA),
has received $14.6 million from the CDC since
2002, according to the Huffington Post. Many
of the resulting “research” studies from
NANEA have been used to support supposed
vaccine safety. As the Huffington Post stated:
“Questions about Thorsens’s scientific
integrity may finally force CDC to rethink the
vaccine protocols since most of the other key
Page 16
than 25 years. And, the book is a how-to
guide, providing tips on group process,
outlining needed action items to be completed,
providing graphs and questionnaires to guide
your analyzes, and recommending additional
resources.
The books also points out where to spend
money in ways guaranteed to improve student
outcomes. In other words, if you cut a little
extra from hose areas brain research suggests
are dead ends, you’ll have some money to
reinvest in ways brain research tells us are
virtually guaranteed to improve outcomes. At
the very least, you can ensure that budget cuts
will NOT have a negative effect on student
outcomes. If used to its fullest, this means that
your school can forge ahead in its efforts to
improve the lives of its students, despite our
nation’s economic woes.
Pete Seeger ended his famous song with the
lament, “When will we ever learn?” If necessity
is the mother of invention, this time of budget
crisis is the time for us to learn how to apply
brain research in our schools. And applying it to
budget cutting can be the first step.
pro vaccine studies cited by CDC rely on the
findings of Thorsen’s research group.
These include oft referenced research
articles published by the Journal of the
American Medical Association, the American
Journal of Preventive Medicine, the American
Academy of Pediatrics, the New England
Journal of Medicine and others. The validity of
all these studies is now in question.”
Paul Offit also Called Out for Lying
Dr. Paul Offit is another pro-vaccine bigwig,
the same man who has notoriously stated
that infants can tolerate 10,000 vaccines at once.
In 2008, veteran CBS journalist Sharyl
Attkisson wrote an article detailing Offit’s many
ties to the vaccine industry, and noting that Offit
failed to inform CBS about exactly how much
money he and his employer, Children’s Hospital
of Philadelphia, are paid by Merck, the
manufacturer and marketer of numerous
vaccines, including Gardasil, hepatitis B,
chicken pox, shingles, MMR, and the rotavirus
vaccine that Dr. Offit helped invent.
In response, Offit gave Attkisson’s article
a scathing review and his rebuttal was posted
in the Orange County (OC) Register shortly
after Attkisson’s report ran in the CBS
Evening News. Now the OC Register has
issued a retraction of Offit’s rebuttal.
The American Academy of Pediatrics
(AAP)—to whom the vaccine industry gives
millions for conferences, grants, medical
education classes and even to help build their
headquarters—even sent a letter to CBS
containing misinformation about NVIC in an
attempt to strong arm the network into taking
down their Times Square billboard message,
which encourages everyone to make informed
vaccine choices.
The good news is that many issues—
including the right to transparency in vaccine
research and safety, and the right to vaccine
choice—are in the Violent Opposition / Fighting
phase. As you can see, we know what comes next!
ASTROLOGY FOR JUNE 2011
We enter June with a Solar Eclipse
in Gemini on the 1st , followed
by two more eclipses, a lunar
on the 15th , and another solar on July
1st . This indicates a time of intense
energy and stress, when unpredictable
situations are more common. Eclipses
are known to suddenly expose a hidden
problem, bringing what was in the dark
to the light. Because of the intense energies
of the lineup, people often feel tired.
We can work with this special energy to
clear unresolved issues, or situations left
hanging, bringing the light of compassion,
respect and kindness, to ourselves
and others.
With Uranus, Pluto, Saturn alignment
once more taking place in June,
July, and August, the summer will be one
of breakdown and uncertainty. Within the
breakdown is our unique opportunity.
This is the Creative moment, the moment
when the old structures are cracked
open, when challenges create opening
of our hearts to each other.
HOROSCOPES FOR JUNE 2011
12 OPPORTUNITIES FOR GROWTH
by Melanie Gendron
Aries: Mar. 21—Apr. 19: Pluto and Saturn
are giving you a big boost this month.
Because of these changes, some friends
may not agree with the direction you are
taking. Financial conditions and related
areas may see advances, with a boost in
both resources and possessions.
Taurus: Apr. 20—May 20: The issue
comes down to “intuition versus facts”
or “compassion versus the rules”. Either
way, be true to yourself, be honest with
yourself, and you will know what the
“right” answer is for you.
Gemini: May 21—Jun. 20: You tend
to say what you believe now. Keep in
mind that what you say or write has
impact, for better or for worse! This is the
time to research and refl ect upon your
objectives. Your imagination can serve
you very well, particularly with regards to
new concepts.
Cancer: Jun. 21—July 22: What will
your next move be? What height is still
untouched? You’ve been thinking and
discussing just that. You will fi gure it all
out and create your life into what you
want it to be. Remember, the Universe
doesn’t mind when we ask for things, It
minds when we ask for too little.
weightiness just seems to pile on,
doesn’t it? Just a few days without
laughing, and before long you’re suffering
from irregularhilarity, on track for a
full-blown case of humorrhoids!
This doesn’t have to happen...
particularly if you happen to live in
the Northeast, or will be visiting there
in June. Swami Beyondananda, the
The steadiness of the Taurian earth
energy can serve us well during this
changeable Gemini time. Highlighted is
reconsideration of values. A change of
plans can set things on course, allowing
shifts to happen. Taurus as a feminine,
or yin sign, directs us to nurture the
inner connection to quality of life. For
greater vitality at this time infuse your
life with nature.
At this time there is mixed possibilities
concerning the world-wide
fi nancial systems. With the mutable energies
and intense eclipses, unpredictable
situations are at hand. Be prepared, as
we are in the whirlwind of great change.
Jupiter in Taurus, the sign of wealth and
abundance, can stabilize some of the
unpredictable aspects.
Saturn goes direct on the 12 th .
There is pressure to meet squarely all
Leo: July 23—Aug. 22: You could be
rolling in clover before June ends. Seems
that all the work you’ve been doing is now
going to start to pay off. Your ambition
and/or your desire to be acknowledged
for your achievement comes to the
forefront.
Virgo: Aug.t 23—Sept. 22: There are
times when your social life and your personal
happiness clash, but most of the
time, you are happily working towards
success and prosperity. Recognition is
likely to come your way, and the responsibility
that comes right along with it! Do
what you feel is right.
Libra: Sept. 23—Oct. 22: Is it time
for you to begin down a new and more
interesting professional path? You are
changing things for the better—making
a new commitment or revitalizing an
older one, setting up budgets, and just
generally getting things balanced and
organized.
Scorpio: Oct. 23—Nov. 21: So much
to do, so little time, or so it would seem.
Time to get organized, Scorpio. Clearing
out psychic “junk” or ridding yourself of
bad habits may be part of the picture now.
This is an especially introspective month
during which you have the chance to truly
uncover your personal strengths and
talents. Try to accept the differences you
see between your ideal and actuality.
ultimate Self. So, why marry?
I’ve asked myself that question,
having partnered more than once, remaining
desirous of a soul mate despite
dissolution. Each marriage and partnership
provided knowledge of relationship,
expanding consciousness and the
ability to cultivate love as I met the daily
challenges of being a couple and communicating.
As we relate wholeheartedly,
we gain in wholeness of Being. We are
deal with debt, and formulation of a clear
and concise plan for the future.
The sea and all bodies of water,
issues and situations with hospitals and
prisons, as well as deception, and greater
spiritual connection are all heightened,
as Neptune goes retrograde. Neptune
dissolves old paradigms or it heightens
denial. As it is conjoined with Chiron,
the wounded healer, its directions are
clear. We are wounded by the waters
and through the experience, seeing
what is out of alignment can motivate
true healing.
The summer solstice takes place
on June 21
Sagittarius: Nov. 22—Dec. 21: Your
emphasis and focus shifts on people and
relationships, ranging from personal to
platonic to professional. The creative urge
is running through your life with abandon.
If you are feeling particularly annoyed or
impatient, it would be wise to fi nd projects
and things to do so that you can guide
excess vigor gainfully.
Capricorn: Dec. 22—Jan. 19: Once
the security level is reached, you may fi nd
yourself in romantic surroundings and in
the mood for companionship. You have an
opportunity to get rid of what doesn’t work
in your life, while also discovering what
does. You could seek distinction and strive
towards perfection in your work.
Aquarius: Jan. 20—Feb. 18: This is a
playful period of the year, when you are
inspired creatively and emotionally. After
a period of self-protectiveness, you are
now more spontaneous and more willing
to take risks. Creative self-expression of
any kind is favored at this time.
Pisces: Feb. 19—Mar. 20: You are likely
to have countless ideas, thoughts and
plans going on, and you might scatter your
focus as a result. If channeled well, this is
an excellent time to showcase your ideas
and do presentations. Look for ways to
have fun without going over budget. This
is a good time for self-improvement programs,
or philanthropy and charity.
st as the Sun moves into Cancer.
With the intensity of this summer’s
emotional energies, people will be
moved by emotional tides of feeling.
Our country’s foundational values are
going through a crisis and will emerge,
radically changed, over the next couple
of years. Key words for the summer…
connect with strength within, personal
clarity and fl exibility.
BIG PHARMA ATTEMPTING TO CORNER THE
MARKET ON MEDICAL MARIJUANA
(NaturalNews)
Saturday, May 28, 2011
by Tara Green
As DEA raids and IRS harassment
continue on state-approved
medical marijuana,
Big Pharma eyes the profi tability of
cannabis and prepares to muscle in,
using its lobbyists and government
connections to ensure a monopoly on
legal sales of the drug.
In early April of 2011, two drug
manufacturing giants, G.W. Pharmaceuticals
and Novartis, announced
they had formed an alliance to license
and market GW’s Sativex, a liquid
cannabis drug. The drug is already
available in Great Britain, as well
as Canada and Spain. The licensing
agreement with Novartis will enable
sales to expand into markets in Africa,
Asia and the Middle East. FDA Phase
III trials are still being organized for
Otsuka, GW’s partner for licensing
Sativex for the US market.
Unlike other cannaboids produced
for recreational or medicinal
use, Sativex is not a synthetic but an
actual extract of the cannabis plant.
It therefore lacks the side-effects of
the synthetic drugs which merely attempt
to replicate cannabis. Patients,
primarily people diagnosed with MS
or cancer, spray Sativex beneath their
tongues.
GW claims that Sativex is formulated
to provide the same health
benefi ts that medical marijuana offers
but without that drug’s high. GW says
that Sativex balances the psychoactive
agent THC with cannabidiol (CBD),
the chemical believed to be the source
of medical marijuana’s anti-nausea
and cancer-cell-killing effects, in
such a way as to eliminate any of the
sensations associated with recreational
marijuana. However, cannabis expert
Dr. Lester Grinspoon, professor
emeritus of psychiatry at Harvard
Medical School, points out that the
issue of whether Sativex produces
marijuana high depends on the size
of the dosage.
One of GW’s allies in its attempt
to replace state-legalized whole-plant
medical marijuana with its own chemical
extract is Dr. Andrea Barthwell
whose career includes consulting for
GW, as well as stints as deputy drug
czar under President George W. Bush
and as president of the American Society
for Addiction Medicine. Barthwell
frames Big Pharma cannabis as the
best way to bring marijuana into medical
usage: “The safety and advisability
of any prescriptive medicine should
depend on years of careful scientifi c
scrutiny, not whims at the ballot box by
individuals who lack the qualifi cations
to make such decisions. Allowing cannabis
to circumvent FDA approval sets
a dangerous precedent and puts us on
a slippery slope.”
Big Pharma’s big contributions
to many legislators means they have
many elected offi cials willing to see
things the drug companies’ way on
this, as on many other issues. Even
legislators known to take a strong
states’ right stance on other issues,
such as offshore drilling, somehow
fi nd themselves standing up for federal
oversight on this topic. For example,
Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.), who holds
the dubious distinction of being the
member of Congress who has accepted
the largest amount from pharmaceutical
fi rms, has taken a stance against
state legalization of marijuana.
If you have a politician in your
state who speaks out against medical
marijuana, you may want to look into
his/her ties to Big Pharma. As the
American Independent observes, the
pharmaceutical giants’ strategy as regards
marijuana seems to be “demonize
it, prosecute it, shut it down, then
grab the market.” Let your friends
and family know that many of those
who fi ght against medical marijuana
are not, as they may prefer to present
themselves, taking a pro-family stance
against drug addiction, but are shills
for multinational drug corporations
who want to keep all drug profi ts in
their coffers.
The idea that a drug can be
denounced as evil in one context but
hailed as a medical miracle if sold
within the pharmaceutical system is
nothing new. Big Pharma’s magic
cure pills for ADHD bear a suspicious
chemical resemblance to speed.
As consumer health advocate
and critic of federal drug policy,
Mike Adams has pointed out elsewhere
in NaturalNews (http://www.
naturalnews.com/021501_m...), this
double standard, with multinational
corporations valued above the health
of private citizens, has a pernicious
effect on our culture “While dangerous
prescription drugs are killing a
hundred thousand Americans each
year, the DEA does nothing. But when
herb smokers light up in private, they
are branded criminals and subject to
a form of tyranny and oppression that
should never be tolerated in a free
society.”
