Om liberates us at the time of death<br />

“At the time of departure from th<strong>is</strong> world, remember Om.” (Yajur Veda 40:15)<br />

“He shall receive instructions on the Pranava. …[At the end of h<strong>is</strong> life] he shall d<strong>is</strong>card h<strong>is</strong><br />

body remembering [reciting] the emancipating holy mantra, Om.” (Narada Parivrajaka<br />

“<strong>The</strong>refore, one who follows the way of life of the gods, he passes away in the Om sound,<br />

the highest Brahman. He sees in h<strong>is</strong> self the Highest Self [Paramatman], the highest Brahman.”<br />

“<strong>The</strong>n Satyakama, son of Shibi, asked him [the R<strong>is</strong>hi Pippalada]: ‘Venerable Sir, what<br />

world does he who meditates on Om until the end of h<strong>is</strong> life, win by <strong>That</strong>?’ To him, he said: ‘If<br />

he meditates on the Supreme Being [Parampurusha] with the Syllable Om, he becomes one<br />

with the Light, the Sun. He <strong>is</strong> led to the world of Brahman. He sees the Person that dwells in<br />

the body, Who <strong>is</strong> higher than the highest life. …<strong>That</strong> the w<strong>is</strong>e one attains, even by the mere<br />

sound Om as support, <strong>That</strong> Which <strong>is</strong> tranquil, unaging, immortal, fearless, and supreme.”<br />

(Prashna Upan<strong>is</strong>had 5:1,5,7)<br />

“[<strong>The</strong> sage] has for h<strong>is</strong> support the supportless Brahman alone, and th<strong>is</strong> sage in the<br />

turiyatita state finally remains completely absorbed in the non-dual atman alone…when he<br />

gives up h<strong>is</strong> body with the sounding of the Pranava Mantra, Om.” (Turiyatita Avadhuta Upan<strong>is</strong>had)<br />

“<strong>The</strong> man who, having subjugated h<strong>is</strong> senses, repeats every day the Pranava Mantra,<br />

shakes off h<strong>is</strong> mortal coil and <strong>is</strong> converted into the universal expanse of ether [akasha] which<br />

<strong>is</strong> but another manifestation of Parabrahman.” (Agni Purana)<br />
