1.3 Objective of the study<br />

Generally, the study is designed to assess the major factors affecting the performance of<br />

women entrepreneurs in MSEs and the challenges they face in starting and running their<br />

own business in Dessie town. Specifically, it is intended to assess:<br />

1. The major characteristics of women entrepreneurs in MSEs and their enterprises.<br />

2. The key factors that affect the performance of women entrepreneurs in MSEs.<br />

3. The supports given to women entrepreneurs in MSEs by TVET institutes in Dessie<br />

town.<br />

1.4 Significance of the study<br />

Women should create their own jobs and become entrepreneurs since opportunities of<br />

getting employment in either government, non government or a private organization is<br />

currently almost declining (Gemechis,2007). This is possible only if the barriers of<br />

women entrepreneurs are solved .Generally, the study has the following significances.<br />

1. It can be one input to existing Women Entrepreneurs, potential entrepreneurs, MSE<br />

heads of the town and the region and TVET educators to alleviate the problems that<br />

women entrepreneurs face.<br />

2. It shows what areas of support should TVET institutes and MSEs have to work<br />

together.<br />

3. Since more is not written in this area, it will also be an add to the existing literature.<br />

1.5 Delimitations of the study<br />

Information taken from Dessie trade and industry office shows that more than 4,500<br />

women entrepreneurs are found in the town. Had the study been conducted in all these (if<br />

possible) or majority of them, it would have been complete. Furthermore, there are<br />

different issues that can be researched in relation to women entrepreneurs. But, this study<br />

is delimited to the key economic, socio-cultural, legal/administrative factors affecting the<br />

performance of women entrepreneurs in MSEs. In addition, the study focuses only on<br />

assessing the major personal and organizational characteristics of women entrepreneurs<br />

in MSEs to check whether these characteristics affect their performance. The study also<br />
