Vacancies<br />

Vacancies exist for part-time porters in the Radcliffe<br />

Science <strong>Library</strong>. Duties comprise 20 hours per week,<br />

cleaning and staffing the security desk. Hours<br />

include one Saturday morning in 3, and one evening per<br />

week (6-10pm during term, 5-7pm during vacation) with<br />

compensating time off. Applicants should get in touch<br />

as soon as possible with the Deputy Keeper of<br />

Scientific Books (ext.341).<br />

Death<br />

We are sad to report the sudden death on Tuesday 18<br />

November of Mr Ivor Whiting, who since April of this<br />

year worked part-time in the Radcliffe Science <strong>Library</strong><br />

bookstack. Ivor joined the RSL on retiring from the<br />

University police and was Bedel of Arts from 1978. He<br />

will be very much missed.<br />

Memorial Service<br />

We would like to remind readers of the Newsletter that<br />

a memorial service for Professor Shackleton will be<br />

held on Saturday 6 December at 2.30pm in the<br />

University Church.<br />

Mrs Wietzel and Rev. Johnson<br />

Mrs Margaret Wietzel and the Rev. Fred Johnson, our<br />

proof-readers for the Pre-1920 catalogue project, are<br />

retiring at the end of this month. A leaving party<br />

will take place at 12 o'clock on Friday 28 November in<br />

the Curators' Room. All who wish to attend are<br />

welcome and are asked to inform Computer Section (ext.<br />

203) of their intention to do so. G.P.N.<br />

Children's Party<br />

Any member of staff with children of the appropriate<br />

age who has not yet received an invitation for the<br />

<strong>Bodleian</strong> children’s Christmas party should contact Mrs<br />

Dunstan on ext. 211.<br />

<strong>Bodleian</strong> Lecture<br />

Mrs Clapinson will be lecturing on 'The <strong>Bodleian</strong><br />

<strong>Library</strong> as the Antiquaries' Closet' at 1pm in the<br />

Cecil Jackson Room in the Sheldonian Theatre on<br />

Thursday 4 December.<br />

Exhibitions<br />

From Officina Bodoni to oblivion boys: some recently<br />

acquired private press material from the 30s to the<br />

80s, has opened in six cases in the Divinity School.<br />

A poster is available, for sale at 20p in the<br />

Proscholium shop, and a leaflet may be purchased in<br />

the Divinity School by putting 5p in a special<br />

display/cash box there.<br />

Also in the Divinity School is a small display of the<br />

original watercolour sketches of Littlemore village<br />

life in the 1880s by Miss Herschel, reproduced in A<br />

Country Year, the <strong>Bodleian</strong> <strong>Library</strong> Calendar for 1987,<br />

(on sale in the Proscholium at £3.95, with usual staff<br />

discount).<br />

<strong>Bodleian</strong> portraits<br />

Dr. Kenneth Garlick has kindly agreed to revise and<br />

bring up to date Mrs Lane-Poole's Catalogue of<br />

Portraits... in the <strong>Bodleian</strong> <strong>Library</strong>. He will start by<br />

examining each portrait, and staff in reading rooms<br />

and other rooms where portraits are to be found are<br />

asked to be as helpful as they can - especially by<br />

holding ladders steady!<br />

Flu Inoculation<br />

Some 28 members of staff have asked to have an<br />

inoculation against flu. The University Medical<br />

Officer has ordered the vaccine, and it is hoped that<br />

arrangements will be made to inoculate staff in the<br />

near future.<br />

Keeper of Scientific Books<br />

Dr. Shaw attended a Symposium on Electronic Publishing<br />

arranged by the Commission for the European<br />

Communities and held in Luxembourg, 5-7 November. One<br />

of the most interesting presentations was a preview of<br />

the Domesday project which is to be released by the<br />

B.B.C. on Wednesday, 26 November - watch your<br />

television screens.<br />

<strong>Library</strong> Association Workshop<br />

The <strong>Library</strong> Association will be holding a one day<br />

workshop entitled 'Other Job Avenues: Another Approach<br />

to Career Development' in Rotherham on 4 March 1987.<br />

Further details are available from Miss Bland in the<br />

Secretariat.<br />

Fi(r)sticuffs<br />

We all know that parking is an emotive issue, but we<br />

must point out that the meeting called for by the<br />

Secretary of the <strong>Library</strong> to discuss parking<br />

arrangements was mistakenly described in last week's<br />

Newsletter as a 'fist' meeting - it should have read,<br />

of course, 'first' meeting. Ed.<br />

Halifax House<br />

All members of <strong>Bodleian</strong> staff (graduate and<br />

non-graduate) are eligible for free membership of<br />

Halifax House. Facilities include reasonably priced<br />

meals (12.30 - 2.00 pm and 6.00 - 7.30 pm), Monday to<br />

Friday. Television, music, reading and common rooms,<br />

plus a fully licenced bar and excellent wine cellar<br />

are also available. Membership secretary Carole<br />
