One of my favorite sounds in the
world occurs each week in Jewish
communities all over the world.
I’ve heard it on the streets of
Jerusalem as Jews of all ages
walk to and from shul. I’ve heard
it said by hundreds of children at
the end of Friday night services
atop the Chapel on the Hill at Camp
Harlam. Most recently, I hear this
sound each week at the close
of our own worship services.
That sound, of course, is the
traditional Sabbath greeting: Shabbat Shalom!
Shabbat Shalom literally means “A Sabbath of Peace”
and is a phrase we use to welcome and receive each other
on Friday nights and Saturday mornings. Shalom, however,
is a word found prolifically throughout our Jewish literature,
liturgy and language.
A If you ask one of our ECC students what shalom means,
they will tell you “hello” and “goodbye.” Indeed, shalom is
the simple way to greet another person. An appropriate
reply is the phrase Shalom shalom.
A We sing Shalom Aleichem (“Peace be upon you”) to begin
our Friday night services and Oseh Shalom (“May the
One who makes peace.”) at the end of the Amidah.
A We describe the Torah as a “tree of life to all who hold
fast to it. Its ways are ways of pleasantness and all its
paths are peace.”
A In Modern Hebrew, the verb l’shalem means to pay a
fee or settle a bill.
However, the phrase can mean much more when we look
deeper into the words. The word Shalom comes from the
Hebrew root shin-lamed-mem (shalem) meaning “balanced,”
“complete” or “whole.”
What better time than Shabbat to reflect on ways in which
we can make our congregational community more complete
and whole? On February 12 th TBJ will be participating in
Shabbat Shalem, a program sponsored by MetroWest ABLE,
in honor of Jewish Disability Awareness Month. The mission of
Jewish Disability Awareness Month is to bring Jewish communities
in the MetroWest area together in order to raise awareness
and provide meaningful inclusion of individuals with disabilities
and their families in all parts of Jewish life.
We need only to look into our Torah and to the story of
our people in the Book of Exodus to again be reminded of
the importance of an inclusive community. Soon after Moses
meets God in the burning bush and is given his mission of
confronting Pharaoh and freeing the Israelites from slavery,
we learn that he suffers from an unnamed speech-impediment.
He cries out to God: “I have never been a man of words, either
in times past or now that you have spoken to me; I am slow
of speech and slow of tongue.” Although the text does not
tell us Moses’ inner feelings, we can only imagine his anxiety,
embarrassment and nervousness. Perhaps Moses is slyly asking
God, if he, a person challenged by a physical limitation, could
be the leader of the Israelites.
Ultimately, God is proven as an understanding and inclusive
God who gives Moses an interpreter and spokesperson in his
brother Aaron. God says to Moses: “You shall speak to him
[Aaron] and put the words in his mouth — I will be with you
as you speak, and tell both of you what to do — and he shall
speak for you to the people.” Rather than casting Moses away
or embarrassing him for his differences, God makes the
situation shalem, complete.
So too, we will celebrate Shabbat Shalem, a Shabbat made
“whole and complete” by the inclusion of all of our members.
B’nai Jeshurun is proud of our involvement with MetroWest
ABLE as we continue to seek to make our Congregation inclusive,
warm and welcoming for each person who enters our doors.
As this article arrives in our homes, we are entering a
most challenging phase in our Torah reading cycle. We’ve
moving from aggadah (narrative) to halachah (law), from
the dynamic story of our Jewish family and the birth of a
Nation to the endless list of rules and regulations. It’s easy
to see ourselves in the story of a family in flux, facing
challenges and change, but how do we, contemporary
Reform Jews, connect with this set of conventions? Of
course, therein lays the very definition of our Reform
Movement. Marking our 200 th year in 2010, we have
spent two centuries seeking meaning and relevance of
ancient precepts for our lives today.
In February, we will read the well-known story of the
Golden Calf, and the fury with which Moses faces the
people, as he observes this egregious offense. We read
from the book of Exodus, “Do not make for yourself any
molten gods” (Exodus 34:17). The famous Hassidic
Kotzker Rebbe defined the molten god as a fixed image,
inflexible, and incapable of taking new shape. Thus should
be our relationship with God and Judaism: not molten or
static, but ever evolving, taking on new spiritual meaning
and relevance, reflective our experience, education, and
of course our world around us.
Radical Judaism: What Does It Mean to
Find Sacred Meaning in Tumultuous Times?
Rabbi Gewirtz will help you consider the questions: What
does it mean to be either religious or spiritual? How do we
articulate a religious vision that embraces evolution? How is
it possible that in our frenetic and sometimes chaotic world
that we can still find balance, wholeness, and most of all
meaning? These questions will be approached through the
writings of Rabbi Arthur Green, traditional texts, as well as
the sharing of the texts of our lives.
EDUCATION
This reminds me of one of my favorite Hebrew proverbs:
“Do not confine your children to your own learning for
they were born in another time.”
As a Reform congregational family, we place great
emphasis on the value of informed choice. We study
our tradition, then renew our covenant with innovative
practice. Why then should we expect our Bubbe’s religious
school to prepare our children for Jewish life in
2011? Frankly, we don’t! A component of the Long Range
Plan for the Temple has included strategically planning for
innovative education across the generations. Jewish continuity
depends on Jewish education, and education in 2011
cannot be rote memory and recitation. Rather, our TBJ
programs of education seek to plan for meaningful engagement.
Our education study theme for the year, “What does
it mean to be…” raises evocative questions at every stage
of our learning journey.
As we continue to evaluate and improve our programs,
we look forward to providing the most relevant and highest
quality Jewish education for the TBJ community – education
for this time.
of both new and “veteran” members, as together we enjoyed
celebrating the 3 rd night of Chanukah. From the looks of the
dance floor and from all the dreidels spinning about, everyone
had a wonderful time. Thank you to all who came out for such
a special evening, and a special thank you to Jane Wildstein
After a few months as Co-Chairs of the Caring Community
Committee, it feels as if we are officially up and running. What
a wonderful committee this is, filled with people who really
“care”. Whether we are talking about Temple Members who
are making visitations, cooking, running errands and helping
those in need, or the people we are lucky we enough to visit
and get to know. Both groups are truly blessed in what they
derive from these relationships.
Our suggestion box is out in front of the Sanctuary for
members to drop us a line with any needs of our congregants
or those willing to help us and do mitzvot. On that same
table is some helpful literature and even our new Caring
Community Committee brochure that will remind members
of all of our many roles at TBJ. We now have a Caring
Community Committee representative at every Friday night
service, to help members who have come by themselves
and may be hoping to sit with or meet other congregants.
This also gives us an opportunity to mingle before and
CARING COMMUNITY
Grief, Loss and Jewish Belief in the Afterlife
The loss of someone you love is a very painful, personal
experience. Each person experiences their own distinctive
grief process in their own time. There are many feelings
that may be difficult to deal with such as anger, guilt, deep
sadness and shock. While these are all normal reactions to
loss, it can still be overwhelming and frightening. There is
no one way to grieve for the loss of someone significant in
your life, but there are healthy ways to cope with this
painful experience. Remember that this is a process.
A Reach out and be open to family, and friends who
want to be there for you.
A Take care of your own physical health.
A Seek out professional help if you are struggling or
cannot function.
A Find ways to express your feelings creatively or physically.
A If you feel it would be helpful to be with others who have
experienced a loss, join a bereavement support group.
A Find comfort in your Temple. TBJ is a warm and
supportive community where there are many who
want to be there for you during this time of sadness.
A Develop a deeper understanding of Jewish Belief in
the Afterlife. While many Jews feel that there is not a
Jewish belief in the afterlife, this is a misconception.
An exploration into what is really thought about this
issue can bring a sense of comfort and understanding
in dealing with the loss of a loved one.
Mitzvah Corner
The Mitzvah Mountain idea was born from a conversation I had with Robin
Weidhorn and Jodi Cooperman concerning a friend I have who works at the Metro
Regional Diagnostic and Treatment Center in Newark, which serves children who
have been sexually abused. Three years ago, I learned that they had no funds
for holiday gifts and Christmas was fast approaching. Robin and Jodi suggested
we build a mountain and within a week the kids had their gifts. Amazing! Today, not
only do we build the mountain, we fulfill wish lists. This year Sharon Weintraub and
I collected over $10,000 worth of toys and gift cards for over 90 children.
Giving up a night of Chanukah for children that are abused is a great thing to do — if you
ask any adult. But do the kids really get it? Especially the little ones? I was not really certain
until this year. At the toy store, my son Josh (age 5) was happy to pick out a toy for someone his age less fortunate,
but not happy to leave without a toy for himself. I thought for sure that he did not conceptualize our intent.
I was surprised, to say the least, when I was told the next day that not only was he boasting to his friends in
Kindergarten about giving up a night of presents, he was also explaining to them why. His why was simple.
Josh said, “This boy had a mommy or daddy that was mean to him and hurt him and he was sad inside.” Josh
proudly said his present would make him happy again. He then came home and asked to give up another night.
In a world of excess, it is so difficult to teach a child and give them the experience of what it really means
to be charitable. I believe it is a gift to be able to really give to those less fortunate through TBJ, whether it is
by building the Mitzvah Mountain or housing IHN homeless families. Again and again as people dropped off
generous gifts for the mountain, they thanked me for allowing them the opportunity to help others. I am truly
thankful to TBJ for giving me these priceless opportunities.
Joel Katz – Lenticular Art • January 31 st to March 14 th
Joel has always been excited by contemporary art involving color and form.
Recently he has completed work on lenitcular art, an art form which involves multiple
original images printed on an optical lens, which creates movement and animation
when the viewer moves past the work. Lenticular Imaging is a truly exciting art
form. It brings the viewer into play by involving that person or persons with the
artwork. Only through intimacy can the viewer experience movement and change.
Joel makes his images colorful, whimsical and playful, thereby creating a magical
feeling which the viewer can sense. He enjoys watching people viewing his work and
catching the surprise and smiles on their faces as they wonder how this work is done.
Recently retired, Joel now has time to devote to his art, photography and exhibits
at many art festivals. He has received numerous awards and his work is shown in
numerous galleries and private collections.
