One of the best parts about senior year is being able to go off
campus for lunch. It’s the freedom of being able to get whatever kind of
food you want and not having to eat in the cafeteria or pack a sack lunch.
Being able to eat off -campus is one thing high schoolers look forward to
that comes along with the perks of being a senior, but with so many choices
of where to go for food, it can be overwhelming.
It’s exciti ng when the lunch bell rings, but as soon as you start
walking to your car, the questi on of where to eat comes to mind. Though
you may have an idea of what fast food places are nearby, there are many
more you probably didn’t know about.
If you’re willing to cross the bridge over MoPac, there is a strip of
fast food restaurants that can sati sfy your lunchti me hunger, but beware of
the ti me because traffi c coming back to school is always backed up. Try to
leave the ten minutes before the bell rings to make sure you are on ti me for
class.
Where’s your favorite place to
eat ?
Glitter Your World!
DIY projects that any student can do!
by Heather Reed
1
What you will
need: A pair of Keds,
or any canvas shoes,
TOMS or Converse would
be great too. Any brand of
loose glitter, any color is okay
and of course some ModPodge,
paint brushes, and painters tape
(which I found useful for a
nice clean edge).
2
Mix your
ModPodge and glitter
together in a 1:2 ratio, you
want a thick usable paste so
adjust accordingly depending
on the glitter you use. Of
course the thicker your paste
the fewer layers you will need
to apply, but the harder your
paste will be to apply,
4 5 6
After they have
completly dried, peel
of the tape everywhere
you placed it. (you might also
find it helpful to put tape on
the eyelets. It just depends on
how clean and professional you
want your shoes to look.) You’ll
want to relace your shoes.
Go ahead and
apply your glitterpodge
paste. Let the shoes
dry for at least an hour between
each coat. Repeat this
step until you’re satisfied with
the glitteriness of your shoes.
Let your shoes dry completely
before moving on to the next
step, really...wait!
3
Wrap the tape
around the bottom
of your shoe, where the
canvas stops and the rubber
sole begins. This is an optional
step but it help create a clean
line because the glitter paste
is hard to control! Also, don’t
forget toremove the laces
before painting.
You have completed your
DIY glitter shoes.I bet they
look amazing!
Tip: If the glitter ever starts to
peel or crack, just apply more
glitter-podge.

The BEST Back to School Backpacks
definitely have some of the best backpacks around campus!

Websites Every High School Students Needs to
Know About
by Carlos Martinez
High school can be a stressful time for all students regardless of the class load so getting help is
crucial to getting through high school unscathed. The following is a list of websites every high
school student should know about regardless of grade or age.
First of all is http://easybib.com/ an easy and free website that helps students
with their bibliographies. Generally in Anderson teachers will ask you to use MLA
format, but many students have either forgotten or never learned how to form correct
bibliographies. Easy Bib will help you organize your bibliography regardless of wether
your source is a book, newspaper, journal, website and much more.
Secondly the SAT determines a big part of what college you get into, so any help you
can get is a necessity. Fortunately there’s www.collegeboard.org, a website completely
devoted to the SAT. It includes the SAT question of the day which are old test questions
from previous years. Even if you’re a sophomore or freshman, devoting one minute
each day to answer the question will astronomically increase your score. An added
bonus for all of you who have smart phones, there is an app that College Board has
made that is called the SAT Question of the day which is a convenient way to prep for
the SAT.
Next another great website that can educate you about colleges and careers is http://
www.princetonreview.com/. This handy website offers you the opportunity to visit
the websites of many colleges so you can start getting an idea of what colleges you
would like to apply to well before you even need to. If you decide that you are better
at the ACT than the SAT this is the website with tips and tricks for the test as well as
where you will be signing up to take the ACT.
One of the most important websites on this list is Naviance which can be accessed
through the Anderson High School website. This is where you sign up for college
visits, update your resume, check your class rank, check emails sent from the school
and much much more. You can sign in using your student ID for both the username
and password. Go to http://www.succeed.naviance.com.
Lastly, https://gradespeed.austinisd.org/pc/ is the website that you can login to
check and monitor your grades and attendance for all 8 of your classes. Freshman,
check often and early and make it a habit. If your teacher puts in a wrong grade it’s not
going to help much if you don’t check until the next six weeks, so this website should
be bookmarked and not ignored. It also helps you keep up with work you are missing.
The Edition is online! The print magazine is
going to be limited to features articles. The online
Edition is going to contain more timely material,
since it can be updated frequently. The QR code
to the left will take you to the website, or you can
go to http://alturl.com/t7ex4 (short url), or just
go to the www.myhsj.org website and search for
our school.

PSAT, SAT, and ACT Tips
The PSAT, SAT, and ACT are known for their brain frying questions and mind numbing short stories, but this
article will tell you how to get past these annoying obstacles, and to make a decent score. The SAT is offered
nationally seven times a year, in October, November, December, January, March (or April), May and June. The
ACT is offered nationally every year in October, December, February, April, and June. Here are some tips to make
a better score.
1. It sounds cliché but a healthy, nutritious breakfast in the morning has
actually been proven to make you more focused for the test.
2. Take challenging courses your freshman, sophomore, and junior years of
high school. This will help you to better understand the confusing questions that
the PSAT, ACT, and SAT throw at you.
3. Take classes over the summer to help prepare for the three tests. There
are classes you can take at Anderson, or outside of Anderson. For example, More
Than a Teacher is a fantastic program that gives you tips and tricks during and
before the PSAT and SAT. Also, if you take a practice PSAT, ACT, or SAT it can
be helpful because the more you are familiar with the three tests, the better score
you will receive.
By Michael Armour
4. All three tests are timed, so you need to take your time, and skip any questions
you can’t answer. Remember, on the PSAT and SAT, if you miss a question you get
deducted 1/4 of a point, but if you skip a question nothing happens. Also, some people
think that because the last two problems in each section are especially hard, they should
rush through the rest to take time on the last two. Unless you’re very sure you can get
the problems right, you shouldn’t do this. Every question counts for the same amount,
so you should spend time on questions you think you can get right, not questions that
will take up your precious time. As for the ACT, no points are deducted for incorrect
or skipped answers; you are graded solely on the number of correct answers
5. Do the simple things. Read all the answer choices before marking your final
answer. Check your answer sheet regularly. Try educated guessing when you can
eliminate at least 2 answers to multiple choice questions. Remember, you can earn an
above-average score by getting only half the questions right and omitting answers for
the rest of the questions on the PSAT and SAT. So, if you can’t make a decent educated
guess, omit it and move on.
6. Another big tip is to watch your time. Nothing is worse than when you are in
the middle of a section and you run out of time. This can seriously hurts your score.
7. Colleges give out many scholarships every year for people who score well on the PSAT and SAT. On
the PSAT, if your score is around 210, you may be qualified for the National Merit scholar award. If you get the
National Merit scholar award, you can get 3 different scholarships: The National Merit Scholarship which is
$2,500 dollars for your freshman year of college. The Corporate Sponsored Merit Scholarship which ranges from
$500 to $10,000 per year. Finally, you can receive a College sponsored Merit Scholarship which ranges from $500
to $2000 dollars per year.
8. The ACT and the SAT are a bit different. The ACT has many similarities to the SAT, but instead of a
writing skills section, there is a science reasoning section that focuses on what is being measured, relationships
among variables, and trends in data. Also, the SAT is scored on a base of 2400, with three sections each worth
800 points. For the ACT, there are four sections with a total score of 36. On the ACT, there is an optional essay
that adds points to your score, while on the SAT the essay is required.

applying for college
Essay Topics
One of the many struggles students have when
applying for college seems to be fi nding a topic to
write about for an application essay. Many students
frequently think about the best topics to write about.
However, none of them really consider the worst
ones. USA Today recently published an article on the
worst topics that a student could write their essay on.
The worst of these subjects is “The List,” or in other
words, all of a student’s successes. Most colleges have
a designated place to submit their resumes, which
typically includes their activities, honors, and awards.
USA Today suggests that instead of trying to include
all achievements, pick just one and focus on writing
Managing Your Time
Due-dates for high school assignments combined
with due-dates for college applications can evoke
frequent feelings of stress for high school students
in the midst of the college application process. US
News and various other college prep websites have
published helpful tips for students to manage their
time wisely with their large work load. Steps that
re-appear throughout these articles include getting
organized and making a schedule. Reading directions
on the applications and knowing all the due dates
is a key component in this step. Students should
to do list:
October
• Begin completing your college applications
• Gather letters of recommendation
• Edit your college Essay
• Re-Take ACT/SAT if necessary
• Attend college fairs and go on college visits
and expanding on that success. The New York Times
recently published an article as well that suggests
once the student has found their topic, they should
make sure that they are telling a story that coerces
and shows that they are considerate human beings.
Asking questions helps students to derive topics that
hold promise; a good strategy is to write down these
precursory questions on a piece of paper, answer
them, and put them aside. Later on students should
come back to them and see which ones they feel
they are most interested in; these are the topics they
should select.
record these dates on a calendar and give themselves
an ample amount of time to complete everything
by the time it is due, or better yet, before the duedate.
An additional reoccurring step was to schedule
time to relax. Studies show that it is good to give the
brain a break because it surprisingly allows for more
productivity. Overall, managing time and planning
ahead are some of the biggest factors in preparing
and applying for college.
Austin City Limits
Austin City Limits was a 3-day music festival
held in Austin, Texas on October 12th - 14th. The
festival is located in the heart of Austin, situated in
Zilker Park. Over 130 bands play on the 8 stages.
Local Austin venders attend the festival serving
their unique and delicious food. The festival started in
2002, making this its 11th aniversery. The festival is
an event which can be enjoyed for people all ages.
It has been confirmed that next year’s
ACL will be 2 weekends in a row, instead of just one.
This is exciting news for it will make the festival less
crowded, becuase the festivals are divieded in half.
But it also means that there will be more people in
austin for the week in between the festivals, making
downtown Austin a madhouse. With over 80 thousand
people attending the festival, you can expect alot of
traffic going downtown.
This year’s headliners include: Red Hot Chili
Peppers, Niel Young, The Black Keys, Jack White,
Florence and the Machine, and The Avett Brothers.
Friday proved to be a scorching hot Texas day, but
cooled down during the night. Performances to note
were Ben Howard, Weezer, and Avicii.
Saturday was a cooler, cloudy day, with rain
but that didn’t stop the fans from enjoying the shows!
Shows to mention included Big Gigantic (An electronic
duo with live percussions and precision saxophone
solos), The Roots, and Bassnectar. Headlining Saturday
was Jack White, who preformed many songs from his
new solo album, but also played many classic White
Stripe songs.
Sunday, the last
day of the festival was
the hottest of the days.
Yet again, the heat
didn’t stop the fans.
Performances included
Big Kritt, Childish
Gambino, and of course
The Red Hot Chili
Peppers. The Weekend
surprised fans when
he didn’t show up due
to an Illness; to replace
him was Dj Mel.
