MINUTES OF EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING AND
DISTRICT ADVISORY GROUP MEETING
October 18, 2012
The Executive Committee and District Advisory Group of the Iowa High School Music Association met
at 8:30 a.m., October 18, 2012, in Boone, IA. Members of the Executive Committee present were: Duane
Philgreen, Manchester; Jim Fritz, Decorah; Kathy Elliot, Panora; Susan Stogdill, Malvern; and Mike
Teigland, Indianola. Absent – Art Sathoff, Fairfi eld. Members of the District Advisory Group present
were: Donna Washburn, Audubon; Dr. John Chalstrom, Cherokee; John C. Smith, Tiffi n; Mike Stittsworth,
Belmond; and Than Chesher, Winthrop. Absent – Dale Barnhill, Norwalk. Also in attendance was Alan
Greiner, Executive Director, who served as the recording secretary. President Fritz chaired the meeting.
A brief introduction of members present was held. Director Greiner described the roles and responsibilities
of Executive Board members as well as the roles and responsibilities of the District Advisory Group
members.
Director Greiner provided a report on the outcome of the Fall Election for Executive Committee and DAG.
Art Sathoff, Fairfi eld was elected to the Executive Committee, Term Expiring in 2016 and Duane Philgreen
was re-elected, Term Expiring in 2017. TBD – Administrative Representative; Than Chesher, Winthrop -
Vocal Representative; and Mike Stittsworth, Belmond – Instrumental Representative were elected to the
District Advisory Group, Terms Expiring 2015. MMS (Elliot/Teigland) to approve the Election Report as
submitted. PASSED
MMS (Stogdill/Philgreen) to approve the minutes of the July 10, 2012 meeting. PASSED
MMS (Teigland/Stogdill) to approve the fi nancial bills as submitted. PASSED
Jim Henkel from Henkel and Associates was on hand to provide the results of the fi nancial audit of 2011-
2012 year.
Mark Kramer from Fine Designs provided a presentation on Event T-Shirts. MMS (Teigland/Elliot) to
engage Fine Designs to provide event apparel for the IHSMA Jazz Band, Show Choir, and Jazz Choir
Festivals. PASSED
ALL-STATE MUSIC FESTIVAL: Director Greiner presented the registration report for the 2012 festival.
Participation levels have increased in the wind, percussion, and string entries. They have decreased in
the areas of vocal and piano entries The overall registration numbers have decreased by 40 entries. Work
details and chaperone availability were determined. MMS (Elliot/Stogdill) to approve Kurt Schwark,
David Fog, Dean Lamp, and Millie Youngquist as Teacher Tenure Award candidates for this year. PASSED
Director Greiner presented the T-shirt, video, and CD sales procedures to be used in Ames. The director
presented a progress report on the 67th Annual Festival. The All-State Discipline Hearing policy and All-
State Festival Rules were presented and discussed.
