4) SCHEDULING<br />

A) <strong>The</strong> “initial” schedule will be available online shortly after the penalty postmark deadline. It is<br />

IMPERATIVE that involved staff jointly decides upon the location of their various performances<br />

and submit online or return the initial schedule to the <strong>IHSMA</strong> offi ce by the specifi ed date.<br />

B) Scratches must be reported to the manager’s offi ce upon arrival at the festival site.<br />

5) PERSONNEL<br />

A) SOLO PERFORMANCE GUIDELINES<br />

1. A student is permitted only one vocal solo performance.<br />

2. Instrumentally, a student is permitted multiple solo performances provided they change<br />

instrument and selection for each registered entry.<br />

B) STRING DUET GUIDELINES<br />

1. a student may perform in one like and one unlike string duet.<br />

• String Duet Like = any two identical string instruments<br />

• String Duet Unlike = any two string instruments that are not identical<br />

C) VOCAL DUET GUIDELINES - see vocal ensemble caption. Students may be in multiple vocal<br />

duets as long as they change literature and duet partner.<br />

D) WIND/PERCUSSION/MIXED DUET GUIDELINES – students may perform in multiple wind/<br />

percussion duet entries as long as they change music and either partner or instrument.<br />

E) PIANO DUET GUIDELINES - students may enter multiple duet entries provided they change<br />

literature and partner. Duet entries must be 1 piano, 4 hands.<br />

F) DUPLICATION OF PERSONNEL/MUSIC<br />

1. No student may participate in two ensembles of the exact same type (i.e., two trumpet<br />

quartets, two treble clef trios, etc.) If a student is found to have performed in two ensembles<br />

of the same type, both adjudication forms will be withheld and both performances<br />

disqualifi ed.<br />

2. Students may participate in different types of ensembles listed under the same general<br />

heading (i.e., A student may perform in one fl ute trio, one fl ute quartet, and one fl ute quintet<br />

under the general heading, “Flute Ensemble”).<br />

3. Students may not perform the same piece of music more than once during the festival<br />

day.<br />

4. All vocal events require memorization. Instrumental events may perform with music.<br />

5. Wind/Percussion entry clarifi cation:<br />

• Ensembles are restricted one player to a part<br />

• Ensembles may not be conducted<br />

• Choir entries may have multiple players on a part<br />

• Choir entries may be conducted<br />

6) LEGITIMATE INSTRUMENTS<br />

A) <strong>The</strong> French Horn will be considered a woodwind instrument only in a Mixed Woodwind Ensemble.<br />

B) <strong>The</strong> only electronic instruments permitted for Solo/Small Ensemble Festival is the electric<br />

bass guitar for Percussion Ensembles, and the Vibraphone.<br />

C) <strong>The</strong> Executive Committee has ruled that the human body is NOT a percussion instrument.<br />

Directors should exclude compositions that utilize exclusively special effects (hand clapping,<br />

body slapping) as the primary compositional device.<br />

D) Wind/Percussion ensembles may substitute instrumentation if there is a transposition of octave<br />

(fl ute/piccolo) or like key (oboe/fl ute). This regulation does not pertain to directed choirs.<br />
