Acehnese vowels consist of ten oral vowels and seven<br />

nasal vowels. The oral vowels consist of three high vowels<br />

[i «• u], three mid-high vowels [e 9 o], three low-mid<br />

vowels [*• A o], and one low vowel [a]. The vowel that is<br />

symbolized by [A] is an unrounded back vowel. ([A] is not<br />

distinguished from [o] in some areas of Greater Aceh<br />

dialect, especially around Banda Aceh and Ulee Lheue.) The<br />

two groups of vowels are presented in the following charts.<br />
