<strong>The</strong> Hempstead Plains By 1909 the first<br />
daring flights were made from the central<br />
area <strong>of</strong> Nassau County, then known as the<br />
Hempstead Plains. Because the flat, open<br />
l<strong>an</strong>dscape made a natural airfield, close<br />
to New York, the earliest aviators were<br />
drawn to the place. Thus aviation was first<br />
introduced to th<strong>is</strong> area where it was to<br />
remain the focus <strong>of</strong> intense activity for the<br />
next 50 years.<br />

Long Isl<strong>an</strong>d's first successful aircraft flights<br />
were made by th<strong>is</strong> aircraft in July 1909 on a<br />
portion <strong>of</strong> the Hempstead Plains near where<br />
the county courthouses now are. By virtue<br />
<strong>of</strong> th<strong>is</strong> first flight, the aviation industry on<br />
Long Isl<strong>an</strong>d was born. Aviation pioneer<br />
Glenn Curt<strong>is</strong>s was comm<strong>is</strong>sioned by the<br />
New York Aeronautic Society to provide <strong>an</strong><br />
aircraft for $5000. <strong>The</strong> group set up camp<br />
on the Hempstead Plains near Mineola as<br />
the area was flat, open, with <strong>an</strong> absence <strong>of</strong><br />
trees. <strong>The</strong>re was plenty <strong>of</strong> room to m<strong>an</strong>euver.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Herring-Curt<strong>is</strong>s Comp<strong>an</strong>y, which lasted<br />
but a year, was formed by Curt<strong>is</strong>s <strong>an</strong>d local<br />
aviation pioneer Augustus Herring. Th<strong>is</strong> was<br />
however, the first Americ<strong>an</strong> comp<strong>an</strong>y to build<br />
<strong>an</strong>d sell <strong>an</strong> airpl<strong>an</strong>e. <strong>The</strong> pl<strong>an</strong>e flew well for<br />
its day <strong>an</strong>d was very m<strong>an</strong>euverable. One <strong>of</strong><br />
the first airpl<strong>an</strong>es built by Curt<strong>is</strong>s employed<br />
m<strong>an</strong>y controls developed <strong>an</strong>d patented by the<br />
Wright brothers.
