There are lots of things going on this month. This
month we celebrate Police Week, May 15-21. Open House for
members and their families at HQ will be Saturday, May 21st. The
Department Memorial Services will be held on the front lawn of
HQ, Tuesday, May 17 th at 11 AM. In addition, May 10 th is Lobby
Day in Albany. The RPA and the Alliance of Public Retirees
Organizations of NY State will be running a bus trip up to the
Capitol to seek support from our state legislators in support of
legislation for our retirees. The bus will leave from behind HQ
at 8AM and you must reserve a space on the bus for the trip. The
RPA will provide food on the bus and also lunch at the Capitol.
Members are urged to attend this turnout. Spouses are also
invited to attend this trip. Call the RPA office at 516 294-4488 for
reservation request and details on where else you can get the bus.
Nassau Interim Finance Authority has taken over the
county finances and the PBA, SOA and DAI have taken them to
court because NIFA has done away with the contracted raise that
was supposed to go into effect the same day they took over the
county finances. Meanwhile, gas has hit $4 a gallon in places and
oil is at a record high and it costs over $900 to fill up your oil tank
at home. The Federal Government almost shut down last month
because they couldn’t agree on a budget. I can’t find one person
that admits to voting for voted for current administration.. Is there
any good news out there?

Bob Hayes reports their Saturday luncheons are in full
swing. They are also looking for some new members in the area
and if you are interested in joining them, contact Bob at (561) 792-

Worth/WPB area, give them a call.
Attention Suffolk County Residents
As I reported last month, the Suffolk County Legislature
adopted and the County Executive signed a county resolution
authorizing the Suffolk County Police Department to qualify
retired law enforcement officers from other law enforcement
agencies under the Firearms Qualification Program (HR 218 Law
Enforcement Safety Act of 2004, amended 2010). The cost of
taking the course is $37. The SCPD has not set up any schedule
or given any information about how, when and where they will
conduct the course. As soon as I have information, we’ll post it on
the web site. Mean while, I’ve written to the Commissioner again
and also to Joe Belesi, County Legislator asking for their help
in getting a program established in Nassau. I’ve also asked the
PBA to help with all of this to get our own department involved
in certifying our retired members. It would be a win win situation
for the county because the fees charged would more than cover
the costs. There are over 12,000 retired law enforcement officers
with pistol permits living in Nassau County. Why should any of
them travel to Suffolk County or up state to get certified when it
can be done right here in our own county? The county is looking
for money, well, here is a way to get some extra funds into the
coffers.

Open House & Department Memorial Services
Don’t forget Open House on Saturday, May 21 st . There
will be all kinds of displays, demonstrations and all kinds of police
equipment that will keep the whole family astonished, even you.
Things have changed since many of us retired and you will be
able to see some of the latest "new toys" of the police department.
Bring your grand kids down and all of you can get stuffed on hot
dogs, burgers and soda and enjoy the day. There will be lots to see
there.
The Department will be holding their Memorial Services
for all those who passed away last year. It will be on the front
lawn of HQ at 11 AM, Tuesday, May 17 th . ARPO will present a
Memorial Wreath for our departed members.

Provenzano, Thomas Kern, Joseph Kiely, Thedore Mierzejwski,
Daniel Walsh and John McGibney. Hope to see you at our up
coming meetings.
We will be getting our photos ready for our 2012 calendar
pretty soon. If you have a photo (color preferred) that we could
use, please let me know. Remember that the photo has to be of
good quality and size in order to be reproduced for the calendar. In
these days of digital cameras and computers, I’m sure that many
of you have old photos stored on your computer at home that we
could use.
The second dues notice went out last month to those who
still haven’t paid their dues for 2011. If you are one of them, we
would appreciate it if you sent in your dues payment ASAP.
