There are lots of things going on this month. This 

month we celebrate Police Week, May 15-21. Open House for 

members and their families at HQ will be Saturday, May 21st. The 

Department Memorial Services will be held on the front lawn of 

HQ, Tuesday, May 17 th at 11 AM. In addition, May 10 th is Lobby 

Day in Albany. The RPA and the Alliance of Public Retirees 

Organizations of NY State will be running a bus trip up to the 

Capitol to seek support from our state legislators in support of 

legislation for our retirees. The bus will leave from behind HQ 

at 8AM and you must reserve a space on the bus for the trip. The 

RPA will provide food on the bus and also lunch at the Capitol. 

Members are urged to attend this turnout. Spouses are also 

invited to attend this trip. Call the RPA office at 516 294-4488 for 

reservation request and details on where else you can get the bus. 

Nassau Interim Finance Authority has taken over the 

county finances and the PBA, SOA and DAI have taken them to 

court because NIFA has done away with the contracted raise that 

was supposed to go into effect the same day they took over the 

county finances. Meanwhile, gas has hit $4 a gallon in places and 

oil is at a record high and it costs over $900 to fill up your oil tank 

at home. The Federal Government almost shut down last month 

because they couldn’t agree on a budget. I can’t find one person 

that admits to voting for voted for current administration.. Is there 

any good news out there?

Bob Hayes reports their Saturday luncheons are in full 

swing. They are also looking for some new members in the area 

and if you are interested in joining them, contact Bob at (561) 792- 

5325 or call Al Sarro at (561) 499-3272, so if you are in the Lake 

Worth/WPB area, give them a call. 

Attention Suffolk County Residents 

As I reported last month, the Suffolk County Legislature 

adopted and the County Executive signed a county resolution 

authorizing the Suffolk County Police Department to qualify 

retired law enforcement officers from other law enforcement 

agencies under the Firearms Qualification Program (HR 218 Law 

Enforcement Safety Act of 2004, amended 2010). The cost of 

taking the course is $37. The SCPD has not set up any schedule 

or given any information about how, when and where they will 

conduct the course. As soon as I have information, we’ll post it on 

the web site. Mean while, I’ve written to the Commissioner again 

and also to Joe Belesi, County Legislator asking for their help 

in getting a program established in Nassau. I’ve also asked the 

PBA to help with all of this to get our own department involved 

in certifying our retired members. It would be a win win situation 

for the county because the fees charged would more than cover 

the costs. There are over 12,000 retired law enforcement officers 

with pistol permits living in Nassau County. Why should any of 

them travel to Suffolk County or up state to get certified when it 

can be done right here in our own county? The county is looking 

for money, well, here is a way to get some extra funds into the 

coffers.

Open House & Department Memorial Services 

Don’t forget Open House on Saturday, May 21 st . There 

will be all kinds of displays, demonstrations and all kinds of police 

equipment that will keep the whole family astonished, even you. 

Things have changed since many of us retired and you will be 

able to see some of the latest "new toys" of the police department. 

Bring your grand kids down and all of you can get stuffed on hot 

dogs, burgers and soda and enjoy the day. There will be lots to see 

there. 

The Department will be holding their Memorial Services 

for all those who passed away last year. It will be on the front 

lawn of HQ at 11 AM, Tuesday, May 17 th . ARPO will present a 

Memorial Wreath for our departed members.

pretty soon. If you have a photo (color preferred) that we could 

use, please let me know. Remember that the photo has to be of 

good quality and size in order to be reproduced for the calendar. In 

these days of digital cameras and computers, I’m sure that many 

of you have old photos stored on your computer at home that we 

could use. 

The second dues notice went out last month to those who 

still haven’t paid their dues for 2011. If you are one of them, we 

would appreciate it if you sent in your dues payment ASAP.

in Hicksville as I have said before, a great bunch of people who

The Cradle of Aviation was originally a dream of Alicia Patterson. Alicia Patterson reluctantly became a 

newspaper publisher in 1940 because her new husband wanted to keep her busy and out of trouble, and because 

she wanted to show her father that she could be as good a journalist as he was. From that timid start she created 

the most successful new daily newspaper of the postwar period, Newsday. One of her visions was the creation of 

an air and space museum at Mitchel Field and she donated millions of dollars to establish the museum with the 

condition that if the County of Nassau didn’t match her donations, the museum would be abandoned and never 

built. 

Today, the museum sits over in Mitchel Field and occupies some of the existing hangers from the original 

Field. If you have never been to the museum, it is something that you must see. The museum is a history of 

aviation from right here on Long Island and Long Island played a very important roll in the advancement and 

development of aviation in the United Sates. There were more airfields in Nassau County in the early days of 

aviation than in any other place in the United States. The Mineola Bicycle Shop was one of the original airplane 

builders of early aviation. 

I recently had the pleasure of having a guided tour of the museum from ARPO member Al Anderson. Al 

has been working at the museum since its opening. I had one of my grand daughters Brooke with me for the 

tour and she got to be in many of the photos right along side the displays. Many of the airplanes and exhibits are 

original and many are the last of their kind in the world. The WW II US Army glider on displayed is original. 

It was found in Iowa and was being used as a chicken coup when they found it. It was brought back here and 

completely restored. The P47 on display is the last production model of that plane built at Republic.

obtained from the Naval Test Center at 

Patuxent River, Maryland. It was restored 

by the Grumman Retiree Group, and is now 

in the markings of Captain Norm Gandia, a 

Long Islander from Baldwin and one time 

Blue Angels pilot.

The Hempstead Plains By 1909 the first 

daring flights were made from the central 

area of Nassau County, then known as the 

Hempstead Plains. Because the flat, open 

landscape made a natural airfield, close 

to New York, the earliest aviators were 

drawn to the place. Thus aviation was first 

introduced to this area where it was to 

remain the focus of intense activity for the 

next 50 years.

Long Island's first successful aircraft flights 

were made by this aircraft in July 1909 on a 

portion of the Hempstead Plains near where 

the county courthouses now are. By virtue 

of this first flight, the aviation industry on 

Long Island was born. Aviation pioneer 

Glenn Curtiss was commissioned by the 

New York Aeronautic Society to provide an 

aircraft for $5000. The group set up camp 

on the Hempstead Plains near Mineola as 

the area was flat, open, with an absence of 

trees. There was plenty of room to maneuver. 

The Herring-Curtiss Company, which lasted 

but a year, was formed by Curtiss and local 

aviation pioneer Augustus Herring. This was 

however, the first American company to build 

and sell an airplane. The plane flew well for 

its day and was very maneuverable. One of 

the first airplanes built by Curtiss employed 

many controls developed and patented by the 

Wright brothers.

Not only were airplanes made in Nassau County, but also support 

vehicles like this truck which was made in Farmingdale.

In the history of American commercial 

aviation, there is no airline more influential, 

important, and better known than Pan 

American Airways, established in 1927. It 

was not the first American passenger airline, 

nor did it ever meet with much success in 

the domestic market, but Pan Am (as it was 

more commonly known), represented a new 

adventurous image of the United States 

to the world. Pan Am's heyday was in the 

1930s when it operated its famous Clipper 

Ships service—an ocean-wide network with 

a fleet of 25 flying boats that crisscrossed 

both the Pacific and the Atlantic oceans. 

The service flourished in the late 1930s, 

delivering both mail and passengers, and 

gained a reputation as one of the most 

dependable and elegant air services in the 

world.

Gemini space capsules that returned to earth 

from space.

there was no gravity in space, there was no need for 

any seats, so the astronauts stood up at the controls. 

The three astronauts spent 3 days cramped in 

that crippled space craft after as part of routine 

procedures, Swigert flips a switch to stir up the two 

liquid oxygen tanks in the Service Module, which 

unexpectedly causes one of them to explode. The 

other tank is soon found to be leaking, prompting 

Mission Control to abort the Moon landing, and 

forcing the crew to hurriedly shut down Odyssey 

and power up Aquarius, so it can keep them 

alive for the return home. As the Aquarius crew 

watches the Moon passing underneath them, Lovell 

imagines walking on its surface. On Earth, after 

flight director Kranz declares that "failure is not an 

option", Mattingly is recruited by flight controller 

John Aaron to help prepare procedures to restart 

Odyssey once the crew nears Earth. 

The crew shuts down Aquarius to conserve power, 

subjecting them to freezing conditions. Swigert 

suspects Mission Control has made a mistake and is 

withholding it from them, and in a fit of rage, Haise 

blames Swigert's inexperience for the accident; an 

argument ensues but is quickly quelled by Lovell. 

As another problem arises—the dangerous buildup 

of carbon dioxide exhaled by the astronauts—an 

engineering team quickly formulates a solution 

which allows the Command Module's square air 

cleaners to be used in the Lunar Module's round 

receptacles. With guidance systems on Aquarius 

shut down, and despite Haise's fever and freezing 

conditions inside the cabin, the crew succeeds in 

making a difficult manual course correction by 

briefly igniting the Lunar Module's engine. 

Meanwhile, as Mattingly and Aaron struggle to 

find a way to power up the Command Module with 

its limited power, procedures are finalized and sent 

to Swigert, who successfully revives Odyssey. After 

witnessing the damage to the jettisoned Service 

Module, the crew prepare for re-entry, unsure of the 

condition of Odyssey's heatshield. The crew releases 

Aquarius and re-enters the Earth's atmosphere 

in Odyssey, and after an unusually long period of 

radio silence, the crew reports they are alive and 

well; to the great relief of Mission Control and the 

astronauts' families. After splashing down in the 

Pacific Ocean, the three men are plucked out of 

the water and taken to the aircraft carrier USS Iwo 

Jima.

In addition to the Cradle of Aviation Musem, another attractions next door is the famous Nunley’s Carousel. I’m sure that 

many of you remember taking your kids to ride on it. Built in 1912, the carousel operated at Nunley’s Amusement Park in 

Baldwin from 1940 to 1995. In 1995, the amusement park closed its doors forever. The carousel was obtained by Nassau 

County for $854,000 and put in storage until 2006. A building was built at Museum Row just for the carousel and the 

carousel in now in full operation there. The ring holder is still in operation with it, so you might want to take your grandkids 

there and show them an attraction that their parents use to ride when they were kids.

In addition to the Cradle of Aviation Museum, another attraction next door is the famous Nunley’s Carousel.
