T-6B PRIMARY INSTRUMENT NAVIGATION CHAPTER NINE<br />
Vector onto Base: “<strong>Navy</strong> 123, fly heading 040.”<br />
2. Slow toward 150 KIAS.<br />
a. Upon making the turn to base, set 10-25% torque, allow the aircraft to slow. If a<br />
descent or more rapid deceleration is required, a lower power setting or the use of the<br />
speed brake may be needed.<br />
b. Descend when directed by ATC.<br />
Dogleg: On a dogleg to final, ATC will normally give clearance for the approach. Most<br />
clearances follow a standard format. For example:<br />
“<strong>Navy</strong> 123, fly heading 090, maintain 2000’ until established, cleared for the ILS<br />
Runway 13 Approach at Corpus Christi International.”<br />
On final:<br />
3. As the CDI comes alive, turn onto final in order to capture the inbound course.<br />
4. When established on final and within 5 NM of the FAF, configure to BAC.<br />
Methods for determining when within 5 NM of the FAF<br />
a. DME (not all ILS approaches provide DME)<br />
b. GPS waypoint<br />
c. Established at the published glideslope intercept altitude and the glideslope indication<br />
is “alive” (green diamond starts to move down from the top of the glideslope case).<br />
d. Controller radar identification<br />
Alternate Method: Set descent power (24%) prior to configuring to BAC, configure to BAC<br />
based on glidslope intercept (1 ½ to 1 dot). This will allow the pilot to make few and small<br />
power changes from the final approach fix in.<br />
5. At glideslope intercept, set power to 24% and descend on glideslope.<br />
NOTE<br />
In the case of a strong headwind/tailwind, more/less power may be<br />
required.<br />
6. Corrections for glideslope should be made with power; corrections for airspeed should be<br />
made with pitch attitude. Of course, these two performance indicators affect each other. For<br />
example, if below glide slope by a half dot and 10 KIAS fast, the proper correction would be to<br />
trim nose up until on speed while crosschecking glideslope.<br />
