The number of drone attacks has declined recently but the fact remains that a<br />

certain complicity and silence surrounds this grave issue. Media reports put<br />

the number of drone attacks in 2012 at 48 compared to 74 in 2011. The total<br />

number of casualties as a result of these attacks varied. Conservative estimates<br />

put the number around 240 while some estimates went as high as 400.<br />

According to statistics published by The Bureau of Investigative Journalism,<br />

the number of injured were reported to be 115-172. Women and children were<br />

also amongst those killed in these drone strikes.<br />

According to Pak Institute for Peace Studies (PIPS), an independent thinktank<br />

in Pakistan, militant, nationalist insurgent and violent sectarian groups<br />

carried out a total of 1,577 terrorist attacks across Pakistan in 2012, claiming<br />

the lives of 2,050 people and causing injuries to another 3,822. Over 61 percent<br />

of these attacks were carried out by the so-called religiously motivated militant<br />

groups, mainly the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which caused the killing<br />

of 1,076 people and injuries to another 2,227. The Baloch and Sindhi nationalist<br />

insurgents carried out 404 attacks, killing 437 people and injuring 823 others.<br />

More than 14 schools were bombed in Peshawar and FATA by terrorists.<br />

The bombed schools included one middle school, 4 boys’ schools, 3 girls’<br />

schools and six primary schools. As per a communiqué by Khyber<br />

Pakhtunkhwa Police, 12 networks of terrorists were busted, 459 militants<br />

were rounded up and 52 others were killed during 2012.<br />

Meanwhile, 202 sectarian-related terrorist attacks, perpetrated by banned<br />

sectarian groups, the TTP and groups affiliated with it claimed the lives of 537<br />

people and caused injuries to 772 people. 531 people, mainly Shias, were killed<br />
