TV channel, was shot and killed by four unidentified assailants in Jhang district.<br />

The motive for the killing remained unknown.<br />

♦ Sarfaraz Vistro, a senior journalist and chief reporter at Sindh daily<br />

was shot and injured by a man named Gohar Zaman Shah. He was admitted to<br />

a hospital in critical condition where multiple bullets were removed from his<br />

body. The police registered a case but the accused was not arrested.<br />

April<br />

♦ A correspondent of The News and Geo News TV channel for Orakzai<br />

Agency was threatened by the Taliban with dire consequences if he did not<br />

stop reporting. This was the fourth threat he had received from the Tehrik-e-<br />

Taliban for covering the military action in the area.<br />

♦ Murtaza Razvi, the magazines editor at Dawn, was strangled to death<br />

in an artist’s Karachi studio. The motive for his murder was not known.<br />

May<br />

♦ Two reporters who worked for Sindh TV in Jamshoro were beaten<br />

up reportedly by men hired by a former parliamentarian and district nazim of<br />

Jamshoro. One of the two journalists, Aziz Palari, was attacked in retaliation<br />

for stories critical of the former legislator. The journalist thought that he had<br />

been beaten up because they had reported the use of public school teachers as<br />

personal servants of the former lawmaker. The other journalist, Ismail Barejo,<br />

was beaten up for reporting on the beating of Aziz Palari.<br />

♦ Tariq Kamal, an assistant chief reporter for a local Sindhi newspaper,<br />

went missing along with a friend on May 6 from Karachi. The two men’s<br />

bodies were found on May 10. Both had been shot in the head.<br />

♦ Razzaq Gul, a correspondent for Express News in Balochistan, was<br />

kidnapped near his house in Turbat and his dead body was found the next day.<br />

The body bore 15 gunshot wounds and evidence of torture. Gul was believed<br />

to be the 21st media person killed in Balochistan over the past three years.<br />

♦ The Islamabad residence of Shakeel Anjum, a senior journalist at The<br />

News, was attacked for the second time by about half a dozen armed men. At<br />

the time of the attack Shakeel was not home. A similar attack had occurred on<br />

Shakeel’s house in 2006 when his son received serious bullet injuries. A complaint<br />

was registered but the attackers remained unidentified.<br />

♦ Abdul Qadir Hajizai who was a part-time journalist was shot and killed<br />

in Washuk district of Balochistan. He worked for a private Balochi language<br />

TV channel and was on his way home when gunmen on a motorbike shot at<br />

him. He died at the hospital.<br />

♦ Armed men opened fire at the house of Turbat Press Club President<br />

Irshad Akhtar. The journalist and his family escaped injury. The attack appeared<br />

to be meant to send a message to the journalist. The Balochistan Union of<br />
