Multiple Myeloma
• Look for a patient with anemia, hypercalcemia
and renal insufficiency
• Lytic bone lesions, vertebral fracture, or back
pain increased at night g
• Low anion gap*
• How high is the level of serum alkaline
phosphatase?
• Normal
• Diagnosis:
– Serum M protein > 3 g/dL
– X ray of the skeleton* (which is better bone scan or X ray)
– Plasma cells > 10% in the bone marrow
