The Marist North Harbour Rugby & Sports Club has
enjoyed one of the most successful seasonsin the
history of the club. Over 570 players were registered in
both junior and senior sections of the club during the
year; the Premier side started the year off on the right
foot winning the Marist Cup/Spillane Tournament
for the first time ever. No fewer than 5 club players
have worn the silver fern during the year [including
one U19 World Cup (winner]; 8 players are currently
playing in the Air New Zealand Cup; 16 are in other
North Harbour representative sides; 6 junior players
have been selected in Roller Mills & Goldfields sides;
the Premier side reached the Final for the first time
ever going very close to winning their Championship;
and the Restricted Black and U19 sides won their
Championships, both after hard-fought seasons.
I wish to congratulate all club players and
administrators for the huge effort needed to achieve
this remarkable record, and look forward to seeing
the club continue its unstinting progress.
Presidential Thoughts

Looking to the Future
During 2007 we’ve coordinated successfully well over 500 players
in the Marist NH Rugby Club, consisting of approximately equal
numbers of senior and junior players. While the junior numbers
are fairly consistent with last year, the senior numbers jumped
considerably this year and we fielded a record number of 8 senior
teams. While growth is indeed exciting, it brings home to us the
cold hard reality that we have limited physical capacity to maintain
the sort of growth that we look likely to see over the next few years,
having such an advantageous geographical player-catchment
position. Teams in both junior and senior sections have become
frustrated at being unable to train and/or play on our domain
fields, all the while watching other parties using up the valuable
and limited field time we hold so dear. Starting at the beginning
of the season the Premier side’s first home game was shifted
elsewhere due to the ‘imposition’ of an international LaCrosse
Tournament which seriously chopped up several areas of Domain
1, the scarring from which can still be seen despite the passage
of time. This damage, combined with a disappointing amount of
representative team training – both union and league – caused huge
pressure to be placed on Domain 2, which in turn took quite some
time to heal, resulting in junior teams training anywhere but at the
club, and perhaps the most dramatic result being the fact that the
Airforce side, already under pressure from other codes to use their
on-base field, at no stage trained or played at the club. We’ve also
had some pressure on our back-up field at Wainoni Park over the
years, with the ever-growing soccer code claiming all but one field
at this Greenhithe location, and some pressure being placed on us
to sacrifice – or at least exchange - our one remaining field.
Despite these restrictions, the rugby played within the club has
been of a high standard at all levels, with Friday night rugby being
a roaring success for the junior section, and with three senior
sides making it to their Championship Finals, two claiming winner
trophies, while the Premier side went extremely close to achieving
their first-ever North Harbour Premiership, despite their many
absentees who were away on representative duties; all-in-all a
successful season, with 5 players achieving national honours, and
our players being liberally spread throughout the North Harbour
representative ranks from the NPC side to Goldfields.
Looking to the future, we have no real doubt that at some stage we
will inevitably outgrow our facilities, with other stadium changing
rooms needing to be used this year to accommodate all players,
on the rare occasions when we played 4 home games. And we’ve
seen many occasions when the clubrooms have been packed with
players, family and friends – truly a nice problem to have. The North
Shore City Council through the Stadium Trust is our landlord, and
we have the security of a lease which extends through to 2014; but
we’d be very foolish to believe that we could maintain our present
level of growth through another 7 years without having serious
failure in our ability to house this rapidly expanding club. With that
in mind we’ve accepted an invitation from the Council to examine
what other alternatives we may have in the future, always bearing
in mind that we can’t move unless we have a demonstrably better
alternative to the status quo.
2007 has been a frustrating year for the Marist
Bluebellies. Although our playing ranks have been
strong, and support excellent, having only 2 games
at the club all season due to the vagaries of the club
having to work in with the Union and the Stadium,
has been disappointing. On a brighter note, another
two little bluebellies were born during the season so
things look good for the future!!.
We would like to congratulate the Premiers, U19S,
and Restricted Black teams for making the finals.
As with most seasons, we are losing a few guys to
retirement so if any one knows of any possible new
recruits we can be contacted through the club. . And
finally to our supporters, these old buggers couldn’t
do without you to cheer them on each week. Go the
Bellies!!!!
Back Row: Cherie Nielsen (Co-Manager), Charlie Coughlan, Clint Fox (Parent Helper)
Front Row: Lee Howearth, Brady Fox, Sean Modrich, Sakalia Naufahu, Jacob Nielsen
Absent: Harry Stockill, Pauline Stockill (Co-Manager), Troy Brophy, Paul Brophy (Coach)
Thanks to Paul Brophy, our extremely patient and
tireless Coach, J8 Red has been transformed from a
“swarm of bees” to boys that can run with the ball,
pass once ripped, rip opposition tags and best of all
score tries!
Paul’s son Troy is one of our team’s speedsters. He
baffles the opposition with his sweeping runs and
then zips along the sideline to score. He is great on
defense and loves to know the final score! Harry
is another of our speedsters and holds the team
record for runaway tries. Throughout the season
he showed dogged determination in ripping those
elusive tags. Jacob, the team peewee, also showed
determined ripping and with his mean sidesteps
and zippy running style weaved his way through
the opposition. Sean, the quiet serious fellow of
the team, consistently gets the rips and when the
opportunity presents, runs straight down the field
to score without great fanfare. LJ started as our shy
timid player but now he loves to get the ball, run and
score with shouts of encouragement from Mum and
Dad! Brady is another one who was a little unsure
at first but now chases down the opposition, ripping
tags and scoring tries with the best of them! Sakalia
will be remembered for not wanting to take the ball
up but, with Paul’s persistent encouragement, finally
gave it a go and scored two great tries! The beaming
smile for Mum was wonderful to see. Last but not
least in the team is Charlie. His storming runs up the
field with the opposition players flying in his wake are
legendary. Watch out for him when he is allowed to
use his fend!
A season highlight for J8 Red was having the
opportunity to play in the Rippa Rugby Curtain-raiser
for the North Harbour vs. Taranaki Ranfurly Shield
challenge. This was an amazing experience which will
be remembered by both the boys and parents alike.
A big thank you goes to Paul for taking up the role
as Coach, to Pauline and Cherie for double teaming
as Co-Managers and to the friendly, enthusiastic and
encouraging group of families that made up J8 Red.
This all helped to make a great season and we look
forward to next year!
J8 Blue is one of the 3 ‘Ripper’ teams with 8 players,
4 from St John’s, 2 from Pinehill, 1 from Albany and
Kingsway respectively. The season started off well
with all the kids (and parents) very keen and involved.
The eagerness showed in the early games with all
running around and into everything. Ripping was
picked up quickly with passing and supporting the
ball carrier taking a bit longer.
As the session progressed the games improved
weekly with some excellent flowing games with
minimal stoppage. It was great to see the kids fully
involved and really working together as a team. Some
loved the defensive ‘ripping’ while others couldn’t
wait to run with the ball. Individuals skills developed,
some had natural ability from the very start while
others grew week by week. It was always amazing
how players shone in different ways week to week.
It was a very enjoyable sessions, the parents were very
supportive, the kids got on extremely well and have a
very good grounding to go into next session with.

Wow, where to start. What a season!! The boy’s first
game was very entertaining and showed us how
much they had to learn. Brodi and Mason were more
interested in doing “arm pit farts” than playing rugby.
Pieter and Bevon-John ripped anyone who had the
ball (including their own team). Kale wasn’t too sure
he wanted the ball and Matthew and Oliver led the
way. The boy’s enthusiasm was contagious.
The game was initially very stop start. A player was
ripped, the team stopped, lined up with their arms
out for spacing, passed the ball, and play continued.
Now – you should see the legends they have become.
The game is fast, the game is furious, and the boys
give one hundred percent.
The stars: Ollie - great on defense, runs hard, and
straight for the try line. Matthew - he rips, he swerves,
and he scores numerous tries (scored 340 points for
Marist in 12 games – yes 68 tries). Kale – reminds
the team to space out, actively seeks the ball. Pieter
– “the boomerang” he runs towards the oppositions
try line before heading to our try line as fast as his
legs can carry him. Bevon-John - faster than a bullet,
great support player, he rips, and he scored 110
points for Marist in 10 games. Mason – the little dude
with attitude scored tries and ran fast. Brodi – they
say quality takes time and we eagerly awaited him
crossing the try line – then three in one game. Ben - a
late starter to the team picked up the game quickly,
ripping and scoring tries.
Many thanks to our ref TJ, fabulous supporters, team
photographer Bevon Jacobs and our coach Steve,
who had the patience of a dozen saints and worked
his magic on this team. Watch out AB’s – here we
come! Go white!!!!
As the North Harbour NZ Universities-affiliated Club,
Marist was excited to welcome for the first time a
Varsity Blues team for their first season. They joined
the Restricted U85kg grade, which is very competitive
being made up of lighter but experienced players.
Throughout the season they gamely insisted on
fielding a team each week, even though they were
often lacking in numbers.
Unfortunately they didn’t win a game, but their
passion and determination impressed their fellow
club Championship-winning side, the Restricted
Blacks, who played them twice, and they managed to
score quite a few tries against all-comers.
Without a designated coach or manager, Dan
Holwerda tried to do all things and was a standout
inspiration for the team and the club, assisted [when
he was in the country] by Liam Bradley. They had a
few standout players, with Warren August, Stuart
Royal and Alan Zaharia being accepted for North
Harbour rep trials.
All in all the team’s looking forward to playing again
next season, and building on the progress made in
2007; for their part the club’s determined to assist
with a management team to help consolidate their
performance levels, and give them a shot at the 2008
Championship title.
Absent: Mike Goffin (coach) Wayne Rhodes, Jeremy Clark, Mitch Tangalea, Jamie Spurr, Keil Burich
Rather than retiring from rugby at the end of 2006, we
accepted a suggestion by Dean Allnutt that we should
move from our home club of Waitemata, to carry on
in the North Harbour competition. A major problem
from the outset though was that we’d been known
as the Waitemata Brothers, but we weren’t too sure
whether ‘Marist Brothers’ would go down too well in
a catholic club………………..!
Since we’d won 4 Championships for Waitemata in
the Auckland competition and played in the Auckland
U85 Rep squad against many of the North Harbour
boys, our reputation preceded us and as a result of
this [and the fact that we beat a Takapuna side by 50
points in a pre-season game] we were marked men!
[The ref before our first game warned us that he’d
heard about us and that we should take it easy or he’d
yellow card us!....he did!]
Eight of us formed up the basis of this years team,
being coached by Mike Goffin, and by the only one
of us who’d played in North Harbour Billy [‘Peach’]
Panapa, who at 49 was our inspirational speaker [his
words!] and the old man of our squad when he took
the field as halfback halfway through the season.
Karl ‘Sawnoff’ McAneaney as hooker/manager did
a good job of keeping us in touch with the club and
equalizing our situation with the refs; we picked up
some players from various parts as we went, but often
had to play winning rugby with only 16 players.
In the first half of the season we came under fire
from several clubs for dirty play, and it looked as if
the North Harbour Union would join the call forces,
when Marist stepped in and called the Union to task
for listening to gossip from disappointed losers who
couldn’t differentiate between dirty play and hard
play. This was about the end of the first round and
fortunately the top referees took a close look at our
games, agreeing that we played hard, but not dirty,
and that issue was closed; about this time we won the
Allnutt Trophy as first round winners, and this shut
our few critics up.
Seven-times finalists Massey chased us all the way to
the final, and were right in the game until the second
half when we went from a 3-3 halftime scoreline to
a 32-3 final score, to take our first North Harbour
Championship. All in all a good season’s work, and
we look forward to building on that in 2008.

The J7 Red team started the season with 7 players out
of the 9 players in the team last year. We welcomed
one new player to complete our squad of 8. The boys
have all had great improvements throughout the
season which has been a joy to watch. This has come
from confidence gained from training and support
from team mates.
Great friendships have formed throughout the past
two seasons and may it continue for many seasons
to come.
A highlight of the season was receiving the North
Harbour region Sportsmanship Award for the entire
J7/J8 grades. Well done.Thank you to the parents/
siblings/family/friends in giving us great support and
encouragement all season. Your enthusiasm matches
the players week in week out!
A special thanks must go to Kevin for assisting with
coaching and coning out the fields. Kim for also
coning out the fields. Sean for assisting with coaching
and being our awesome Associate Referee.
Thanks team for playing very entertaining rugby for
Front Row: Tayne Kerekere, Alexander Barrington-Nash, Sam Jakicevich, Jacob Lassen, Callum Ford
We’ve had an enjoyable season. The boys have
had fun and gained lots of skill and confidence. We
struggled a bit with numbers, only having 7 players
in the team so we were often short when anyone was
sick or unable to make the game. The boys coped
well with this and still played their hearts out. We had
x2 new players to ripper rugby in our team; Gino and
Alexander, both of which showed huge improvement
through out the season. Jacob and Sam show steady
growth in their game. Consistently energetic and
hardworking. Callum and Talia played really well
together, always there to back up players, receive
the pass and score the try. Both scoring at least x3
trys per game. Tayne showed great commitment and
defence, diving for the tags and also good straight
runs up the field. All boys have further developed
their rugby abilities and are ready to take the next
step up a grade.
Ripper was definitely the winner for the year the boys
started off as a team of sorts and developed into a
team of rugby playing friends. The great thing about
this grade and brand of rugby is that it isn’t all about
winning and losing, it is about being on the field
learning basic skills, learning to play as a team and
enjoying yourself. Big thanks to both our coaches,
Peter and Brad. I know it’s hard to handle and control
x7, 6year old boys, you did a great job. Thanks to all
the parents for their great commitment and support.
Bringing the boys to training and games, even in the
pouring rain and cold. All in all a great season for all
involved.

The players were Seamus who was born with a rugby
ball in his hand, Matthew who progressed to be a
confident try scorer, Ryan who is showing great skills
and keen to progress to tackle, Dylan who recently
scored his first try in a burst of speed, William whose
skills have improved and great defence, Ben who
has had a great season and made a great team effort
and some great runs, Dayne has run many tries and
loves scoring in the corner and a great asset. A great
season enjoyed by all.
While it’s great that we’ve won 2 Championships
trophies in a season, we’ve actually achieved that a
couple of times before -in 1997 [U19s & Sen 3rds] and
again in 2000 [U21s & U19s];
however the Marist U19s have now won 4
Championships in the past 11 seasons, making that
grade the most prolific champions in the club’s short
history. And their record of 3 Championships in
the 8 seasons since 2000 has been bettered during
the same period in all senior clubs/grades by only
Takapuna Premiers [4/8], this made all the more
remarkable by the fact that no Marist U19 side was
fielded for at least 2 of those seasons.
It’s also interesting to note how many clubs have won
more than 2 championships in a year. ECB regularly
won 3 & 4 in the mid-1980’s, and again in the early
1990’s when Takapuna took over with some multiple
successes in the late 90’s.
More recently Massey scored 3 in 2004 and 4 in 2005,
and Marist shares the 2007 top honours with Massey
with 2 apiece [which was oh so nearly 3 for Marist!]
This is a sign of things to come as Marist readies to
take its turn as a contemporary rugby powerhouse in
North Harbour.

It was such a good year it is hard to know where to start.
All eyes were on the boys ability to step up from touch
rugby to full tackle rugby.
As far as they were concerned they were going to smash
everything in sight, I think they forgot the fact they were
also going to get smashed.
So training started with tackle practice and ended with
tackle practice. Having mastered the art of defence it was
onto the rest. Skills such as passing, backing up, mailing,
driving and ofcourse attack were next and all 14 boys
attacked every training season and game with passion.
Halfway through the season coach James Barham
came up with a forward move and a back move, two
nice simple moves which created many tries and much
pleasure for the training staff.
As the season progressed the team began to choose itself
- position wise, which made life easier for the coaches.
The forwards applied themselves to the basics of
forward play very well, which provided our fleet footed
backs with a lot of quality possession, many a time the
ball was ripped from the oppostion team and spun out to
the wingers. Simple stuff but done very well.
Many thanks must go to Marc Simpkin our Manager and
James Barham our other coach. Also to Andrew Ridling
one of the best referres I saw all year.
Once again without the amazing support of the parents
and grandparents - this team would not be such a
pleasure to coach.
So onwards to next year which we are already looking
forward too. We wish the Simkins all the best in
Christchurch( we are going to miss you Jack)
A big thanks to the Junior Boys Committee who do an
outstanding Job.
Marist North Harbour Premier’s 2007 season in
review.
The 2007 season will go down as a watershed year
in the history for the North Harbour Marist “Saints”
premier team and for the wider Marist North Harbour
Rugby Club.
It all culminated in Marist taking on Takapuna in the
championship final of North Harbour rugby’s club
premier division competition at Albany Stadium, on
Saturday August 11.
This was the first time a Marist premier team had ever
made the finals, while perennial finalists Takapuna
were chasing their tenth title. In the end, Takapuna’s
experience helped them squeeze past a brave and
spirited Saints team by 28-23. However, all those lucky
enough to witness this pulsating game – including a
huge contingent of vocal and proud Marist supporters
– know it is now only a matter of time before Marist
will claim its inaugural North Harbour premier club
rugby title.
It all started back in March, when the premier team
travelled to Napier and took out the Marist Cup as
winner of the Spillane Tournament. The winning
streak then rolled into the first half of the North
Harbour club competition, with Marist making the top
four of the split round.
During the season, Saints premier squad also
attained an outstanding number of New Zealand
and provincial representative honours including:
Tony Woodcock, NZ All Black; Rudi Wulf, NZ Junior
All Black; Tom Chamberlain, NZ Colt; Ben Afeaki &
Tua Saseve, NZ Under 19s; James Rodley NZ Maori
All Black; Frank Afeaki, NZ 7s trialist. While Tony
Woodcock, Rudi Wulf and Antony Boric were in the
Blues Super 14 squad the Saints also lost the services
in early July of Rudi Wulf, Ben Afeaki, Antony Boric,
Mike Reid, Tua Saseve, Tom Chamberlain and James
Rodley to the North Harbour Air NZ Cup squad, while
club stalwart Tony Coughlan was lost to Northland’s
Air NZ Cup team.
As the season continued on, injuries and this big

number of representative selections caused a major
drain on playing resources, but the Saints pride and
heart continued to march on - with the team collecting
the Birkenhead Tra st Coast Bays and managing to
retain the Les Pearce Shield all season until the last
home game against Helensville.
The business end of the season saw Marist finish the
club round third on the table only a couple of points
behind Massey and Takapuna. This led on to a strong
quarter final victory over North Shore at home and a
gutsy 17-11 semi final win over Massey, that earned the
Saints a well deserved place in the final.
The 2007 season was also marked with a 100th blazer
match for veteran lock and Captain Damian Albert and
a 50th blazer game for winger Donny Woodhouse.
While all the Marist Premier squad - players, coaches
and management – can look back on the 2007 season
with justifiable pride and accomplishment, all know
that the task was not quite achieved and look forward
to finishing the job in the 2008 season.
The season for J6 Red started with all the team from
last year turning out, as well as seven new players
joining us. This looked to be quite a challenge ahead
of us, but thanks to some really eager and talented
boys, over the season they developed some excellent
ball skills and superb tackling. They acquired a good
sense of their positions on the field and how scrums
and lineouts operate. I’m especially proud of the
way they developed a good team spirit, all the boys
supported each other and passed the ball around
so that everybody had a chance to score tries. The
dedication they displayed then showed in the results,
we won eight games, had three draws and only had
two losses in the last ten games we played.
I must thank our manager Natalie Turner, without
her the teams success wouldn’t be possible, she is
extremely organised and very efficient. It meant that
as a coach, I could just concentrate on coaching and
developing the team.
Too soon the season has come to an end, I have
enjoyed being part of the team environment of J6
Red and hope to see everybody back next year.

A completely new team for J6 White this year, made
up of mostly boys who had never played rugby before
from three Rippa Rugby teams and players from other
clubs. It was difficult early on to get some consistency
within the team due to a lot of absentees and new
players coming on through the season however,
once we had the numbers on a regular basis a great
bond was created amongst the boys and some good
results started to come through.
Although it was great to watch the team grow and
develop, it was satisfying to watch the confidence,
fitness and skill level of the individuals develop
through the season which was rewarding especially
for “Coach Andi” whose ethos was to bring the sport
to the kids and provide a relaxed team environment
for them to develop at their own pace.
Yes, J6 White had it all, from one player who cried
before, during, and after our first training session
and went on to be presented with the “Most
Valuable Player” award to others who just enjoyed
the company of their peers where they felt accepted
and it didn’t really matter if they dropped the ball or
missed a tackle because there were oranges to be had
and a laugh to be shared.
Congratulations to Joshua B, Conner, Jackson, Felise
and Daniel who went on to join a J6 Representative
Team who at the time this was written had made it to
the Semi Finals, the only grade from Marist (North
Harbour) to do so.
Notwithstanding the above it was a pleasure to be
along side the supportive Parents/Caregivers who on a
weekly basis cheered on the team and provided many
sideline laughs during season. A big thanks goes out
to you for assisting with training, transporting and
orange duty, we look forward to seeing you back at
the club next year.
In closing, these boys are a credit to themselves and
we wish them well.
The 2007 Senior 1sts were the little engine that could,
but didn’t quite. It was always going to be hard to back
up the relative success of 2006 (undefeated until a 7-5
semi-final loss to North Shore); with a handful of players
moving up to Premiers and some of the older players
moving on, 2007 was going to be a tough year.
Earlier in the season some of our number had travelled to
Rotorua for the pre-season Marist Spillane Tournament
as a second side made up of some Senior 1st and mainly
Colts players; we had a win and a loss, coming 3rd in the
Brennan Cup.
With the Premiers giving as many players as possible
an opportunity in the first round, the Senior 1sts were
always going to have some inconsistent results to begin
with. We started with a close loss to ECB but recovered
after the Easter break with a close win against Glenfield.
Takapuna inflicted a big home defeat, yet we bounced
back to put 65 points on Helensville. This inconsistency
continued all season – at both training and games and we
never really got out of first gear. Although we were still
traveling well in fifth position, a big loss to North Shore
followed by a default to competition leaders Massey,
and things were not looking great. True to form we
recovered with a spirited wins over ECB and Mahurangi,
however let ourselves down in a 19-17 loss to Glenfield,
which put us out of contention for the championship.
We ended the Round Robin in 5th position, but duly lost
our plate semi-final against 8th ranked Silverdale.
It was a difficult, frustrating season that never really
got going. However we can take solace in the fact that
we did our best to support our Premiers through to
the Championship final and there were some spirited
performances that displayed character and guts, that
coupled with a bit of fitness and training could bode
well for future years. Thanks must go to Ambrose our
Captain and the core of players who fronted each week.
Also thanks to Kev Higgins and the number of players –
especially Lewis - who stood in as Manager, Coach and
Water Boys throughout the season. Go the Saints!

The Senior 2nd ‘Fliers’ Airforce side started the season
somewhat behind the 8-ball after losing a few players
to offshore postings, and the unusual personnel
stability we’d enjoyed in achieving the Championship
title in 2006, was destined not to happen in 2007!
2006 manager Jeremy ‘Boogs’ Borgman had
disappeared to the South Pole for the NZ summer and
took some time to thaw out during the early season
while 2006 coach Kim Bevins was too occasionally
available to share his wealth of experience. We were
also under fire from other codes for the use of our
one on-base field, and were precluded by a unionstadium-weather
conspiracy from playing even one
game at our home Marist grounds.
Newly arrived from England, Rick took over as coach/
manager and did a good job of trying to keep things
under control, maintaining a close relationship with
the club, and urging our very young team to better
efforts, and we had a couple of good results towards
the end of the season, but too late to secure a semifinal;
we’ll have another go in 2008!
J1 is a major rugby challenge. It is a big step up from J2
in terms of individual player ability and size. This year’s
start of season weight range was between 33 and 95kg,
Marist conceding between 10 and 12kg per player on
average to the three big teams Massey, Glenfield and
Northcote. Pre-season discussions led to a strategy
based around fitness, speed of play and excellent teamwork.
Training started 4 weeks before the first game with
several players resigning from other sports to give full
commitment to this team. 48 trainings or games later,
an excellent 86% attendance is a key contributor to the
team’s success.
Statistically it has been an excellent year. Ten wins from
thirteen outings with defeats only by Massey, Northcote
Maroon and Kumeu, exceeding pre-season expectations
considerably. The first two are big sides with several 80
to 90kg very athletic ‘go to’ guys who certainly made the
difference on the day – Marist was not humbled in either
of these games. A wet and cold game at Kumeu was the
only poor performance in a season that has had many
highlights:
• 81 tries scored, some as good as you would hope
to see at any level of rugby.
Page 24
• All players have shown a marked improvement in
skill level and knowledge of the game.
• A tight and supportive team culture has
developed, which has led to a determination to
never surrender – to play hard and with honest
effort for the full 60.
• Representative honours were gained by 11 players
for the Crusader Cup competition; 4 players for
NH Roller Mills; and 1 player for the NH Under 14
team.
• The boys have enjoyed their 2007 rugby
experience, for most their last with NH Marist .
until after high School. They have played some excellent,
open rugby and as a result have experienced the feeling
of success and achievement that great rugby performances
bring.
The coaching team of Russell Hilton Jones, Mark Fitzgerald,
Manus Pretorius and Richard Hattaway are proud to
have been associated with this group of young men and
will follow their rugby and life progress with interest.

J2 Red was a combination of 2 J3 teams from the
previous year coming together to form a squad
of with 26 at the beginning of the season. Early
indications showed that this was going to be a
good year with the players showing an eagerness
to try things and good ability in the forwards and
the backs.
The forwards had good depth in all positions, with
multiple combinations that worked well in all areas.
The tight units provided a consistently good platform
for the backs through good scrummaging and Lineout
play. But the true strength was in second faze, we
had good loose forwards that were able to secure an
excellent percentage of ball and have the support to
provide it to the backs.
With any new combination it takes time to come
together and this was the situation with some players
in new positions in the backs. But when it started to
fire, they were a very exciting unit to watch in action.
We had strong inside backs that had the ability to
break the advantage line and apply pressure in
defense. Our Mid field combinations had great vision
providing space for wings that knew how to score
tries, and there were a few with 60 % of the total tries
scored by Outside backs.
We hope everyone will be back to play J1 and hope
that Tate, James, Matthew, Daniel & Ruben enjoy
Collage rugby next year and we see them back in the
club to play senior rugby. J2 was a good example of
a team that supported each other on and off the field
and played hard and fair, something they should all be
proud of. A season that will be remembered for players
showing great potential and those tries out wide.
Page 25

It seems like only yesterday, when I walked into the
Junior Club Chair’s house to talk about Marist NH
Junior RFC. Three months later, I was Club Captain!
In the months prior to and throughout the season,
the committee sit around the table with remarkable
regularity. We often work late into the evening
(11.30pm) and at times met over breakfast (7.30am),
so we could make the season run more smoothly for
everyone.
So……..
Our three registration days resulted in over 250 player
registrations. They were busy days with shorts, socks
and registration forms flying, but we got through!
Then came Muster Day, when the players welcomed
old and new team mates. Displaying the Ranfurly
Shield, which was accompanied by North Harbour
and Auckland Blues players, added to the excitement
of the day. Our new kit was also issued and I know it
has been well received.
Teams quickly got into their stride with midweek
training and then the season started in earnest on the
21st April.
Friday night rugby also got into full swing with
matches under the floodlights. At the conclusion
of those games, over 200 people have regularly
filled the clubhouse to enjoy Marist hospitality. I’m
sure we will all agree that while it lasted, it was a
fantastic success.
Then the weather changed! Wind, rain and more
rain, resulted in fixture cancellations and restrictions
on training venues. I have to say a big ‘thank you’ to
everyone! You have shown how resourceful you can
be, arranging and travelling to alternative venues
at short notice. I hope we will be able to continue
our excellent working relationships with our new
partner schools.
Then we had our Club Day at the stadium where the
players were joined by relatives and friends, young
and old. We were also joined by some of our senior
players who presented some awards. I think nearly
everyone who attended walked away with at least
one gift. We then made our way back to the Marist
clubhouse, where we enjoyed the vast amount of
prepared food, whilst watching an entertaining
Premier fixture.
The team photo evening was a sight to behold. All
our players looked splendid, sporting their Marist
jerseys - and they were clean! Maybe there will be
one or two wearing an All Black jersey in the future!
Page 26
Junior Overview 2007
I know you’ll agree the photographs we have since
received, are first class.
Our monthly Coaches and Managers meetings have
been a success, and are a useful tool in continuing to
develop the club throughout the season and beyond.
I’m sure you are beginning to see the positive
direction we are taking. I’m pleased to say we have
scored in excess of 8000 points! Well done!
I’m also proud to say we had 7 Marist players selected
to represent North Harbour in the Goldfields, Roller
Mills and U14 grades. A total previously unsurpassed.
During the season, some teams made long, early
morning trips to Mahurangi. At least one team ended
their day with a visit to the Waiwera hot pools to ease
their aches and pains!
We say a sad goodbye to some of our players, who
move onto college rugby next season. Good luck.
We’ll see you back proudly wearing the Marist
jersey soon.
There are too many individual people to say thank
you to, in such a small space. So a huge ‘thank you’
to all the committee members, Managers, Coaches
and parents.
But most importantly, thank you to our Junior
players. You have been there through all weathers.
You have shown dedication, skill and determination,
Junior Section.
Before we know it, the World Cup will have hopefully
returned to New Zealand and our season will be
underway again.
Who knows, we may get a surprise visit from ‘Bill’ at
the next Muster Day!!!
It’s been a fantastic season. Roll on 2008.
The bulk of the J3 “Blues” came from a core base of
J4 Players but we still had 11 “newbie’s” to break in.
The 11 new players we got were starting from scratch.
Scrum what’s that coach?
Tackle! What’s that coach? Ruck, are you swearing at
me coach! Most had no idea of what the rules were.
Those players that had been involved since J8 had to
do all the boring “Basic” stuff again.
By the time rugby season rolled around we had 21
players in the squad. The “Old Hands” that had been
with us for 4yrs or more, of Austin Mills a great little
prop (maybe not so little though), Nathan Lloyd at
fullback, Mason Court a great hooker and 6, Sam
Thomason at half back, and Dominic Aitken winger/
centre. These guys were joined by the “newbies” of
1 or 2yrs standing. The likes of Josh Hilton Jones,
Fraser Conway, Logan Taylor, Louis Nel, Tristan Smith
at number 8, Soren Smith, Logan Brown at 7, Oliver
Parris -Piper another lock,Dillon Larsen and Campbell
A’Beckett.
These core members were joined the newcomers in
Hamilton Belcher, Keegan Bertasso, James Cargill,
Josh Dagg and Callum Ireland
We started the season poorly, losing a few games,
but to good sides, so we weren’t that despondent.
Well I was, but the guys weren’t. We hit some good
form and went unbeaten for a few games, before
running into East Coast Bays and Massey teams, who
just gave us a hiding.
But we came back winning some grand games,
playing a good standard of rugby.
11 of our players made the J3 rep team and 2 guys in
the J4 rep team. The J3 Blues team is representing the
N.H.Marist club at the 2007 Pompalier tournamentand
we hope to win our division. Time will tell.
All in all a very pleasing season. If we can get all
the team back again next year without the need to
“blood” too many “newbie’s” we Will be well placed
for 2008.

The J3 Red team this year comprised 50/50 new
players together with former J4 boys. As the season
progressed, the team began to win more and more
matches. Ratio of wins to losses was about 50%.
The team saw the satisfaction and results come
through strongly when they truly played as a team,
winning most games. Or at least knew they had
done their best.
The best game of the season was played in atrocious
wet, boggy conditions with J3 Red dominating
Takapuna with breakthroughs from kick and chase,
winning 17-10. Our last game of the season was also
among our best games, even though we lost 27-15
to ECB Black (their best team). The whole team was
awarded “Players of the Day” for their great effort,
followed by chips and drink!
All credit to the strong forward pack this year. The
most graphic example was against ECB Red when we
had a couple of 50m rolling mauls up the field, to win
15-7.
During the season we saw: fearless tackling by Sam
A, great runs by Shayne A, forward and back play
with strong tackling from Nick B, strong forward
work from Hunter B, great teamwork from Hamish
C, excellent forward work from Sam C, good work
from Mate F, great tackling by Patrick K, tackling and
teamwork from Kalem L, great tries from Matthew L,
good tackling and wing play from Liam and Jarrod
McD, experienced halfback work from Dominic M,
prolific tries and go forward from Sheldon M, excellent
tackling and forward play from Shaun R, good back
work from Matt S, great lineouts and forward play
from Adre S, fearless tackling and fullback work from
Robert S, great speed form Stefan U, strong forward
driving from Neil von M, and solid forward strength
from Nathan W.
After having reached the U19 semi-finals with a newly
reconstructed team in 2006,
we started the season a little behind the 8-ball, with
2006 co-coach Brownie suddenly emigrating to sunny
Queensland pre-season, and with some U19 players
wanting to play U21, which meant we had some
initial shortages, particularly in the front row; the
team was the youngest in North Harbour with no age
Dispensations sought or granted. Paul Mant retired
from playing and stepped into the breach as backs
coach and Rowan Sabin continued his good work
into the new season with the forwards, while Willie
Harris as the club COC rep was a valuable member of
the management team to have around.
Despite not having access to all the U19 players,
we started the season reasonably well and were
positioned in the top 3 before going into a form slump
in the middle, with injuries affecting us and attitudes
in need of some improvement. This happened, the
team dug in and rallied to win the last 6 games of
the season, happily beating front-runners Takapuna
in the semi-final, before taking apart East Coast Bays
in the final, to take out Championship honours, the
first time for the club since 2002.
We appreciated the assistance of Hugh McGahan [ex
NZ Kiwi League Captain], and input for the backs from
Scott ‘Patch’ Adams borrowed from the Premiers,
was evident towards the business end of the season,
when we so sorely needed it.
Skipper Travis Hadley -as 2006 Grades MPP- attended
an Advanced course at the IRANZ national academy
in Palmerston North in April, and was selected for
the NH U18 representative squad, while 15yo Arron
Hendry was a NH U16 trialist, after holding his own
in the front row with all other U19 teams. Scott Beach
also attended the IRANZ Advanced Player course
under a Perry Foundation scholarship just before the
end of the season; we look forward to building on
huge progress in 2008………….Go the Saints!!!

We started the season training for and travelling with
the Premiers to Rotorua for the pre-season Spillane
Tournament, our Brennan Cup side made up of some
Senior 1st and Colts players, on 10th March. We had
a win [by default] and a loss to Palmerston North
Premiers, finishing 3rd in the Brennan Cup, and look
forward to trying again in 2008.
We started the season with Dave Manners, Bryan
McDonald and John Russell coaching, and Neil
Jeromson managing. We were a little behind the
8-ball, needing to reconstitute the U21 side after
several seasons effectively out of the grade. We were
affected by the fact that the club fielded 8 senior
sides – the most in the province – and were facing a
shortage of front-rowers, but notwithstanding this we
stitched together a side which could be competitive
but often let itself down with some very ordinary play,
for which we were punished in the very competitive
U21 grade.
However the key problem was injuries and a shortage
of front-row personnel, which saw us needing to
default 3 times, leading to automatic withdrawal of
the side from the competition a few weeks before the
end of the season, which at least saw other teams
such as the U19s and Senior 1st strengthened in
numbers for the last few games.
Notwithstanding the fact that we didn’t have a win
all season, the players finished the season in a
reasonably upbeat frame of mind, and enough’s been
achieved in the reconstruction of the U19/U21 grades
during the past 2 years to see the club do very
well in the years to come. Big congratulations to the
U19s and the Restricted Blacks for their Championship
honours, and congratulations to the Marist Premiers
for so nearly achieving the improbable [bearing in
mind their NZ and NPC rep contributions] by taking
out the Premiership. Go the Saints!!!
2007 has been a very good year with the team
undefeated in the regular season. We did have one
hiccup when we organized a game against Kumeu
on one of the cancelled Saturdays. Kumeu turned up
with a very suspicious looking J4 team and a ref who
can only be described as an avid Kumeu supporter. A
penalty count of 2 to 1 in Kumue’s favour in the fist
half saw Marist well ahead and in control. However
with the penalty count reversed to 13 to 1 in the
second half it was no surprise Kumeu came back into
the game. The Marist boys took all of this in their
stride and it was testimony to the fantastic team spirit
we have built up this year.
Forwards: The forwards progressed fantastically this
year. The major improvements have been in their body
position, clean out and overall structure culminating
in the best pick and go forward try I have ever seen
last Saturday from any J4 rugby team. I cannot single
out any players in the forwards or the backs this year
because J4 has played as a complete team and this
is the basis of Steve and my coaching philosophy. I
cannot thank Steve and Jane Bergin enough for their
great support as co-coach and manager – Marist
has a great asset with people like this in the club. I
would also like to thank all the families for their 100%
support of the team.
Backs: We are gifted with a very talented set of
athletes from 9 through 15. Early in the season the
backs really made the difference in a number of
games but forwards ended up being an equally
formidable unit. The boys have scored some fantastic
tries this year. These have been a result of some great
teamwork starting with the forwards with some great
interplays in the backs. The boys have all the skills as
well as the attitude and have pulled off some great
planned moves.

After having an awesome rugby season in 2006 the
boys were back to build on their reputation of been one
of the unbeaten teams in our Grade.
Coaches Mark & Andre have been able to develop and
coach these boys through the two handed touch rugby
from J8 through to positional play/tackle rugby.
All players in J5 Red have set positions and several
boys have an advance ability & skill to play a range of
positions. This year has seen our forward pack develop
strength and improve skills needed for us to win the
ball. Tight forward units provided strong pushing, good
blocking and protection of the ball, this resulted in the
ball been feed to our very skilful and fast past backs.
With several line out tactics and combinations with pre
arranged moves our boys were able to get an advantage
on the opposition. These moves worked very well for us
and resulted in a number of tries.
North Harbour Rugby graded J5 this year and our team
ended up in the cardinal top grade up against mostly
rep level teams. Every week was a tough game and
every week our team proved we were better than the
opposition. With only 1 loss against an unbeaten taka
side this season saw a team of young boys playing
rugby at a very skilful level scoring plenty of tries and
preventing many been scored against us. J5 Red had a
blast of a season and now looks forward to stepping up
next year to full field fifteen aside rugby.
Thanks to Coaches, Manager & Ref, and thanks to the
families and friends who supported our team this year.
J5 Blue began the year as a combination of players
who had come through the grade, those new to tackle
and some new to rugby. Over the season the boys
have developed into a team. After a first up win, the
results were a 50/50 win loss record. In the middle
of the season we then struck the top teams and their
experience proved to be the major difference. To the
boys credit they never gave up and 100% effort was
always given.
The last four games the results showed the effort put
in at training and believing in themselves that they
could perform to the levels expected. The forward
developed into a good solid unit that did everything
that was asked. The backs over the season used their
speed to score many tries with the cover defence
preventing many tries. It was great to see that the
ability to score tries was spread amongst the team,
with many of them resulting from bustling & tackling
to create the turnovers.
From the coaches view point the boys were great to
work with, running them hard at practice and getting
results on the day was worth it. It was also great to see
the level of support from parents, grandparents, and
friends. The boys definitely play better when there is
someone watching to support and encourage. The
team enjoyed the opportunity to play on Friday night
under lights, and it gave the parents the chance to
watch other siblings in the other grades the following
day. Thanks to Chrissie and her team for their work
on Friday nights.
Thanks to Symon Thurlow & Tonny Heck for
Refereeing. Both of them would be looking forward
to not having to chase 20 kids around the field and
trying to keep up.
Based on the finish to the season the boys have set
themselves up well for next season, as they now
have the confidence and belief in their own ability to
play the game. To those boys who have received the
awards, well done. It was a difficult decision to make,
as there were several worthy contenders.

This was the 3rd year in the history of the J5 White
team at Marist and its most significant to date.
Building on last years success the nucleus of the
team who have played some sublime rugby week in
week out were determined to have a strong season.
In accordance with previous years and in the spirit
of rugby the team took on a number of new players
who ably proved themselves as significant and
worthwhile rugby players. The seasoned players
made the new players very welcome and they soon
welded themselves into a very fine team.
New team members Christopher, Jack R, Benjamin
C, Harrison, Sam and Connor played in our forwards,
Joshua and Jack T played in the back line.
Having mainly a brand new forward pack, our
seasoned boys Thomas, Leonard and Zachary had
to show what they were made of. The forward pack
delivered consistent and strong performances and
proved their total worth as a young and emerging
unit. Our back line proved itself time and time again,
with Liam, Ben, Josiah and Harry showing they had
forgotten none of their skills gained from previous
seasons, with Joshua and Jack T contributing hugely
to our try tally.
Results wise the team built on last year’s success
and finished strongly in the Black section. The team
proved to itself this season that it has truly come
of age. However the most important thing was that
the team had fun, learnt a lot about themselves and
played some great rugby.
The coaches for the season were Chris Padden &
Sean Ford with valuable support and input through
the season from Manu T, Mike Ryan and all parents
who pitched in to help while one Coach and Manager
were away. Managers were Nicola Padden & Nicky
Murdoch. Special thanks to referee Brad Rees. A
huge thank you to all the parents for their continued
support throughout the season not only of their own
children but to the Team as a whole.
Page 35

This year has been an exciting year of little steps and huge
achievements. The premiers setting the scene from the beginning of
the season winning the Spillane Tournament, to the last game being
our J6 rep team as the curtain raiser to Harbour / Waikato Shield
match. A season that rewarded us with, championship wins in the
under 19s and under 85 kg competitions, and how proud were we of
our premiers in that final. Juniors were competitive in all grades with
talent and heart from our J8 ripper teams to our young men of J1.
It has been a good year for rugby and the Club itself, with the mortgage
being paid thanks to some hard work by members especially the boys
behind the 200 club. Hard work has also gone into the Club house
itself by volunteers and hard earned money. We continue to construct
our club culture with little things like providing a sausage to all
visiting teams, the reintroduction of Club days for the juniors and the
continuance of our Friday night Rugby (when the weather allows) that
has been emulated by other clubs around the Shore.
But now that the season is all but over, what of next year? The reality
is the North Harbour Marist Rugby club is in a good place with plenty
of opportunities that can be taken up.
We sit in one of the fastest developing areas in the country, our
catchment area population is looking to grow by approximately 20,000
in the next five years. To both juniors and seniors this will involve
looking at strategies to capture and to accommodate those that want
to play rugby.
The size of our catchment area is geographically big (especially at Peak
hour), so how do we manage that better - especially for our junior
teams? Do we look at area teams that can then train locally rather than
coming to Albany?
For the rugby itself we need to continue work on staying with those
players going through collage and getting them back into our senior
ranks. We need to develop our relationships with the schools. Plus
continue to make rugby enjoyable, memorable and competitive
for those that are playing at all levels. We need to help develop our
coaches and managers. Especially at the entry level of junior rugby,
that can see the parent left holding the ball coaching and managing
the team for the season.
We will be looking at our home grounds and club house, with the
decisions to be made on expanding or moving and what do we do in
the interim. How big do we want to go, what business model would
best suit us, how many fields would we like, what facilities do we
require and would we be willing to share.
As you can see we have plenty to do, plenty to provide. As a player,
parent, manager, associate referee, coach or committee member we
look forward to seeing you all back next year and being involved as
much as you can.
Have a great summer and go the ABs
