LADIES 9-HOLE LEAGUE By: Joyce Warren Club Championships will be held this month, and our league has six people competing against each other to reach the playoffs on the 2nd and 3rd. Good luck to all! Later this month, we'll have our Spring Luncheon and installation of officers before the season starts to wind down. Seems as if time has flown by this year. TAI CHI By Sally Mason It has been a wonderful year for our group of Tai Chi “Grasshoppers.” We had the advantage of one of our own, Pat Hutz, bringing us encouragement and new information after attending the Taoist International Center in Orangeville, Ontario last summer. Testimonials of people who have improved their ability to move and gain strength and health were inspirational to Pat and for the rest of us as she relayed the stories. When I was ill with the flu, the group carried on like troupers. This really pleases me as it shows that everyone is becoming more confident and not afraid to step up to the task. Our group is growing and new members are always welcomed and looked after. Since there is no fee, no mats or special clothing needed, Tai Chi is a wonderful practice for those who seek better core strength, balance and improvement in joint function. We meet at 9:30 AM on M-W-F. The first 30+ minutes is a series of fundamental exercises that gently warm up muscles and joints. It is much like Simon Says and easy to follow and learn. Most have 20 repetitions and concentrate on breathing, keeping proper posture, and body awareness. We do these with background music as it helps with blocking out extraneous noise and improves the feeling of moving in unison. Since balance is a major problem for folks “our” age, there is considerable emphasis on strengthening leg muscles and learning to shift weight from one foot to the other to stay centered. The last half of the session is the 108 move set. We have background music and voice commands to help us remember what comes next. After the directed set, a group of us works on doing the set without commands in silence. We are encouraged, seems our memory is improving! Please feel free to come and participate or just watch as we Grasp Birds Tail, Carry Tiger to the Mountain, Move Hands Like Clouds, Part the Wild Horse’s Mane, etc. 14 TENNIS MaryJane Harris Vice President On February 9th, the Lake Fairways tennis courts were a sea of "RED.” Everyone was dressed in RED for Valentine's Day. The day was bright with glorious sunlight..... a sight for sore eyes as our Northerners were concerned about their family and friends stuck up North. The North was experiencing a blizzard, called Nemo. The 32 players started play at 8:40 AM and were finished by 1:30 PM. A lunch of hotdogs and all of the fixings was cooked by our cook, Bob Harris. The Grand winners of the day, winning a free lunch at the next Round Robin were Roger Easden and Bill Fitzgerald who tied with 11 wins. The lady with the most wins was Marlene Otte, she also won a free lunch. The other winners were Carol Stevenson, Barbara Flournoy, Bob Mobley, Paul Norris, Judy Judge and Ron Hasse. The Next Round Robin will be held on March 16th. TENNIS By: MaryJane Harris 239-995-8239 The January General Meeting of the Tennis Association was held on January 24th with over 60 members attending the meeting and pot luck dinner. The hall was decorated beautifully by Toni Cataldo and her Decorating Committee. A resounding round of applause greeted Mrs. Betty Hayhow as she entered the meeting to singing of Happy 93rd Birthday. Happy Birthday and many more Betty!! Rich Newman reported on the court maintenance issues and on the Wednesday afternoon mixed doubles. Currently, Ben Hill, Bill Sawell, Judi Wills and Mary Jane Harris are in the lead. Jane Lonsdale reported that the ladies SWIFT team is currently in 3rd place......now that all of the members of the team are here. Bill Dillon reported that the men's White teams are doing well, Jay Kraby's team is tied with Bill's team for 6th place. Ron Hasse, Captain of the one of the Blue teams reported that they had lost their match 5-1, but he was hoping for improvement now that all members are present. Al Buthman reported that his Blue team had WON their match 10-2......so he knows that his team is on the way to the TOP! The membership voted on having a catered meal for our final meeting on March 21st.
FISH (FRIENDS IN SERVICE HERE) By: Joni Pomeroy, President Phone - 231-779-9593 This month will be our last general membership meeting until November. It will be held in the main hall at 7:00 PM. On March 7th We will have the election of officers for the coming year. On Sunday March 10th from 2:00 to 4:00 PM, also in the main hall our annual memorial service will be held. This service is for any deceased person that you would like to remember. Please fill out the form completely and place in the blue box in the copy room. The forms will be located by the blue box marked memorial. A reminder the date is the day daylight savings time begins. Set your clocks forward one hour. FISH has lost a long time member Peter Yeager. He was a true gentleman and a wonderful volunteer. He will be missed. March will be my last newsletter as I am not running for reelection as the president of FISH. I have enjoyed serving as president and have admired our volunteers who work for the betterment of our community. I will continue to be involved doing whatever I can do to help FISH be a strong organization. I wish the new officers and committee chair persons God speed, I know all will do a great job.
