LAKE FAIRWAYS
ENTERTAINMENT COMMITTEE
By: John & Judy Stewart, Co-Chairs
With so much activity going on, where do we start?
Jimmy Travis, a great comedian and wonderful singer,
was a huge success; we all laughed until tears rolled
down our cheeks!
As we write this, we are looking forward to our
Sweetheart Dinner Dance. We are so excited to be
bringing Mike Imbasciani to Lake Fairways! He is such
a dynamic young talent!
Tickets for the Van Dells sold out the first morning
sales began. Thank you, Lake Fairways, for such great
support! We know this show will not disappoint.
Some of the members of the Entertainment Committee
have had the opportunity to attend some talent
showcases in order to continue to bring great acts to
Lake Fairways. They have also attended some shows in
other communities and arenas in the area. While the
shows have been good, it became obvious that we get
much more “bang for our buck” at Lake Fairways. The
prices are generally the same as ours, but for your
money, you get a seat at a reserved table, or in some
instances, first come, first seated and all were “bring
your own food and drink.” Once again, proving that
Lake Fairways is the place to be!!
Our next fun event will be the St. Patrick’s Day
Dinner Dance on March 16, 2013. Tickets are on sale
now at just $18 per person (call Judy 896-5157).
Corned beef and cabbage with all the traditional trimmings
will be served by the ever popular Sub N Pub!
Additional corned beef will be available for purchase.
Music for dancing will be provided by Renee & Company,
a very talented husband and wife duo. For an evening
of great food and dancing fun: Come, wear your
green and be Irish for a day, or wear your green and
watch the antics of those who are Irish. Sometimes the
apparel is as much fun as Halloween! Either way, you
won’t want to miss the fun!
It’s hard to believe that our season will be coming
to a close at the end of this month. Our annual Pool
Party will be on Sunday, March 24, 2013 from noon
until 3pm, rain or shine. We will be serving Belly Busters,
Tacos in a Bag, Chips, soft drinks and beer. Games
will be played, but the big question is: Will Mike
Rendine retain his title as Mr. Sexy Legs?
We are in the process of selecting new members
for next year’s Entertainment Committee. If you were
unable to attend our open house and would like to be
considered as a committee member, please contact
one of our existing members who are:
Bob & Freda Bennett, Nick & Marilyn Bialkowski,
Keith & Marty Clapp, Roger Easden, Corinne Fisher,
Bob & Pat Garin, Linda Lindequist, Jackie Rabenowich,
Pete & Judy Schumaker, John & Judy Stewart (Co-
Chairs), Frank & Sue Sullivan
By: Fran Douma
On February 12 th the doors opened once again for
another Singles meeting. After a rather low turnout for
the January meeting, I was surprised and delighted to
see how many Ladies and Gentlemen were lined up
waiting to pay for their dinner and buy 50/50 and Raffle
tickets. Once seated, they enjoyed their monthly
social hour with laughter, stories and drinks. The meeting
opened with Valentine greetings to all. Marilyn
Hilliard gave the secretary’s Report followed by Eldine
Thelen’s treasurer’s report.
rolls and coffee with Valentine cup cakes. Following
dinner, the Bayshore Cloggers walked in with their
usual beautiful costumes and smiling faces. They were
ready to perform for us and gave us an excellent show.
The audience clapped and cheered them on. They
were really enjoyed by all.
Our next meeting will be March 12 th . As we all
IT WAS NOT THE SENIORS!.
I got an email today from Facebook telling me
about the notifications I missed today. Great, now my
Facebook is set to "nag" ! Senior citizens are constantly
being criticized for every conceivable deficiency
of the modern world, real or imaginary. We know we
take responsibility for all we have done and do not
blame others.
HOWEVER, upon reflection, we would like to point
out that it was NOT the senior citizens who took:
The melody out of music,
The pride out of appearance,
The courtesy out of driving,
The romance out of love,
The commitment out of marriage,
The responsibility out of parenthood,
The togetherness out of the family,
The learning out of education,
The service out of patriotism,
The Golden Rule from rulers,
The nativity scene out of cities,
The civility out of behavior,
The refinement out of language,
The dedication out of employment,
The prudence out of spending,
The ambition out of achievement or-
GOD out of government and school.
And we certainly are NOT the ones who eliminated
patience and tolerance from personal relationships and
interactions with others!!
INVESTING IS A MARATHON -- NOT A SPRINT
Investors sometimes may get frustrated with their investments because those investments don’t seem to produce
quick results. Perhaps that’s understandable in our fast-paced society, in which we’ve grown accustomed to instant
gratification. But investing is, by nature, a long-term activity. If you look at it in terms of an athletic event, it’s not a
sprint, in which you must pull out all the stops to quickly get where you’re going. Instead, it’s more like the 26.2-mile
race known as a marathon.
And as an investor, you can learn a few things from marathoners, such as:
Preparation — No one gets up one day and is ready to run a marathon. Marathon runners train for months, and
even years. As an investor, you, too, need to prepare yourself for the “long run.” How? By learning as much as you can
about different asset classes, types of risk and all the other factors associated with investing.
Patience — Marathoners know they have a long haul in front of them, so they typically create a “game plan” — one
that takes into account such factors as their physical condition, the weather on race day and the characteristics of the
course, such as whether it’s hilly or flat. Investors should also create a strategy — one that encompasses their goals and
ways of working toward them — and stick to this strategy.
Perseverance — Marathoners may deal with injuries, dehydration and other setbacks, either while training or during
the actual race. But as long as they’re able to keep going, they do so. As an investor, you too will face obstacles, such
as market downturns. But as long as you continue investing and don’t head to the “sidelines,” you have a good chance
of making progress toward your goals.
Vision — Marathoners study the course they’re on, so they know what’s ahead — and where they’re going. As an
investor, you also need a vision of what lies in front of you — the number of years until your retirement, the type of
retirement lifestyle you anticipate, what sort of legacy you plan to leave, and so on. Your vision will help drive your
investment decisions.
Proper coaching — Not all marathoners have individual coaches, but many have at least gone to clinics or joined
running clubs so they could learn more about the various aspects of this grueling event. As an investor, you can
certainly benefit from guidance or “coaching” in the form of a financial professional — someone who knows your
individual needs, goals and risk tolerance, and who has the experience to make recommendations that are appropriate
for your situation.
Every marathoner is familiar with the difficulties of the challenge and the satisfaction of finishing the race. As an
investor, you also will be tested many times. Furthermore, you’ll never really cross the “finish line” because you’ll always
have goals toward which you’ll be working. Yet, by emulating the traits of successful marathoners, you can continue
working toward your objectives — and perhaps you’ll avoid the blisters, too.
OLD CELL PHONES
I am sorry to say that I am no longer
collecting old cell phones for the BVA. The
program is being dropped by the BVA. I
want to thank all of you who have given
your old phones to us.
Yes, I still am collecting complete
glasses for the N. Ft. Myers Noon Lions. We
do not use broken ones or any with no
lenses or lens only. These glasses are sent
to Orlando, FL where they read the prescription,
clean them, and repackage each pair in an individual
bag.
They are then ready to be used by any Lion's Club.
PENNIES FOR POSSIBILITIES
By: Kelly Jo Myers-Madoian, 567-1561
Donate your pennies to help students with developmental
disabilities at Goodwill L.I.F.E. Academy and
Riverdale High School.
"Pennies for Possibilities" teaches
students to count, to save money, and
to identify coins by collecting pennies,
one-penny-at-a-time. The students set
goals and understand the meaning of
saving towards that goal. All the pennies
(100%) are used to pay for community-based
trips.
So if you have a penny sitting around, Kelly Jo is
collecting them for her students. You can contribute
pennies at Saturday morning coffee.
WITH SINCERE GRATITUDE
From Pat Strong
On February 5 th Richard (Dick) Strong passed
away at Gulf Coast Medical Center after suffering a
massive heart attack at the age of 67. The amazing
staff at Gulf Coast tried everything known to medical
science to save him; however, the damage was too
great. God called him home and made a new angel
that day.
During the 4½ days that Dick struggled to live I
was never alone. Our wonderful extended Lime
Lake, NY, family of friends and our other dear
friends that came to visit never left me alone. To
them, I say, "I Love You.” To my daughter, Tami
and our nieces, Kathy, Krissy, and Steffie who flew
in to take care of me, I say, "I Love You.” To our
friends since our military years in Germany 44 years
ago, who also kept me company in the hospital, I
say, "I Love You and will really miss our double deck
Pinochle battles.” To our Lions Club community of
friends that came to celebrate Dick's life and perform
the Empty Table Ceremony, I say, "I am so
fortunate to have you in my life.” To Barb Grant, I
say, "Your prayer touched all of our hearts.” To the
amazing staff at Gulf Coast Medical Center who are,
by far, the most loving, compassionate and amazing
clinical staff I have ever met, I say, "Thank You
from the bottom of my heart.” To Bob and Marie
Sickles, your daughter, Sharon, helped me in more
10
ways that I can say with her frank honesty when all
others tried to skirt around the inevitable. She eased
my breaking heart. To our dear friends at Pine Lakes
that filled my refrigerator with ham and turkey, I
say, "I Love You." To Jim Hayes, who took care of
all the final arrangements, I say, "I could never have
gotten through all of that without you, your gentleness
made things so much easier.”
To the bowlers on Friday afternoon, I say, "Dick
is bowling a 300 game everyday.”
To the golfers, I say, "Dick is hitting and putting
like never before and scoring 10 under par each
game'.
To the Texas Hold'em players, I say, "Dick has
pocket aces, one showing on the table and the river
is the Ace of Hearts and he has gone 'all in'. Read
them and weep.”
To all the night owls that come through the front
gate late at night, I hope that you always got a
smile and cheerful greeting.
We were so fortunate to have found such kind
and fun loving new friends at Lake Fairways. Your
phone calls and cards have helped to ease the pain
a little.
Dick will be laid to rest at the Bay Pines National
Veterans Cemetery in St. Petersburg on the grounds
of the Veterans Administration Hospital and Regional
Office (Dick worked for the VA for 37 years) with the
American Legion performing the Missing Soldier Ceremony
sometime in April.
Retired Health Message
As I was lying in bed pondering the problems of
the world, I rapidly realized that I don’t really give a
rat’s hinny. It’s the tortoise life for me!
would be immortal.
2. A whale swims all day, only eats fish, and drinks
water, and is fat.
3. A rabbit runs and hops and only lives 15 years.
for 450 years. And you tell me to exercise?? I don’t
think so.
I’m retired. Go around me.
God grant me the senility to forget the people I
Now that I’m older here’s what I’ve discovered
1. I started out with nothing, and I still have most of
it.
2. My wild oats have turned into prunes and all-bran.
LADIES 9-HOLE
LEAGUE
By: Joyce Warren
Club Championships will be held
this month, and our league has six
people competing against each other to reach the
playoffs on the 2nd and 3rd. Good luck to all!
Later this month, we'll have our Spring Luncheon
and installation of officers before the season starts to
wind down. Seems as if time has flown by this year.
TAI CHI
By Sally Mason
It has been a wonderful year for
our group of Tai Chi “Grasshoppers.”
We had the advantage of one of our own, Pat Hutz,
bringing us encouragement and new information after
attending the Taoist International Center in Orangeville,
Ontario last summer. Testimonials of people who
have improved their ability to move and gain strength
and health were inspirational to Pat and for the rest
of us as she relayed the stories.
When I was ill with the flu, the group carried on
like troupers. This really pleases me as it shows that
everyone is becoming more confident and not afraid
to step up to the task. Our group is growing and new
members are always welcomed and looked after.
Since there is no fee, no mats or special clothing
needed, Tai Chi is a wonderful practice for those who
seek better core strength, balance and improvement
in joint function.
We meet at 9:30 AM on M-W-F. The first 30+
minutes is a series of fundamental exercises that
gently warm up muscles and joints. It is much like
Simon Says and easy to follow and learn. Most have
20 repetitions and concentrate on breathing, keeping
proper posture, and body awareness. We do these
with background music as it helps with blocking out
extraneous noise and improves the feeling of moving
in unison. Since balance is a major problem for folks
“our” age, there is considerable emphasis on
strengthening leg muscles and learning to shift weight
from one foot to the other to stay centered. The last
half of the session is the 108 move set. We have
background music and voice commands to help us
remember what comes next. After the directed set, a
group of us works on doing the set without commands
in silence. We are encouraged, seems our
memory is improving!
Please feel free to come and participate or just
watch as we Grasp Birds Tail, Carry Tiger to the
Mountain, Move Hands Like Clouds, Part the Wild
Horse’s Mane, etc.
experiencing a blizzard, called Nemo.
finished by 1:30 PM. A lunch of hotdogs and all of the
A HISTORY OF
LAKE FAIRWAYS SOFTBALL
By: Bill Mason
Lake Fairways native son Jim Steele was instrumental
in organizing what we now know as the Mark
Ford Senior Softball League and served as President
the first year. In the early nineties Jim wrote letters to
Del Tura, Tara Woods, and Horizon to see if there was
an interest in forming a softball league consisting of
surrounding communities. After the original letters of
inquiry were written, those interested were invited to
an organizational meeting at Lake Fairways. A schedule
was developed, permission to use the lighted field near
Sun Coast School was granted by the Lee County Recreation
Department, and an entry fee was established.
Del Tura Amigos won the first championship of the
newly formed 7 team league. On November 5, 1992
Lake Fairways played its very first game and defeated
Tara Woods 17 to 2! An estimated 200 spectators
watched Bob Dreyer do the “Australian Crawl into
home.” Dave Yohn and Larry Knowlton blasted home
runs and Marty Barrett legged out a triple. The concept
of cheerleaders was initiated and has stayed active
with the team every year. At the conclusion of the season,
there was a banquet at Tara Woods and Jim
Steele served as master of ceremonies. The cheerleaders
met at Jim’s house and made softball themed book
marks for all in attendance.
In 1994 Sabal Springs and Pine Lakes joined the
league. Pine Lakes and Lake Fairways both held practices
on the driving range. Two four team divisions
were formed, and Del Tura was once again champion.
Lake Fairways finished with a record of 8 wins and 11
losses. The League Banquet was held in the Lake Fairways
clubhouse with 220 players, wives, cheerleaders,
umpires, and fans in attendance.
Two of the best players of the early years were Gil
Flauto and Ted Tetreault. Gil is our only player with pro
baseball experience, having played Class D ball with
Independence, Kansas against Mickey Mantle, who

played for Joplin, MO.
Mark Ford, who helped organize and develop the
league, thought that the champs should have a trophy,
so he generously donated one. He was the manager of
Del Tura, and the league was named in his honor after
he passed away in 1995. Lake Fairways finished in 2 nd
place with a 10 win and 4 loss record. Ken Palazzo was
the manager for our 1 st three years.
In 1996 Marty Barrett took over as manager of the
so-called “Ben Gay” boys. Lake Fairways again came in
2 nd place in the first year of playing games in Cape Coral
at the Northwest Softball Complex.
The information gets a bit sketchy, but it is known
that Marty Barrett was the manager during the 1996,
1997, 1998, 1999, and 2000 seasons. In the 2000 season
Lake Fairways one 3 and lost 18. Leading hitters
were David Shultz. 609 and Jerry Amstutz.600.
Jim Dinsmore became manager in 2001 and led the
team to 14 wins and 7 losses. Shortstop David Shultz
led the team with a.742 batting average and set the all
time Lake Fairways homerun record with 8. Although
he only played one year, the consensus among the “old
timers” is that outfielder Gene Storey is the best player
to ever suit up for Lake Fairways. While playing against
Herons Glen, manager Dinsmore made a strategic
move and switched Gene from left field to right field
with a tying run on 3 rd base, 1 out, and a left hand batter
coming up. The batter hit a line shot to right, Gene
caught it, and made a great throw to catcher Bob
Dreyer for the last out. Lake Fairways won the game 9
to 8, ending Herons Glen’s 44 game winning streak.
In 2002 “Dizzy’s” team finished with 18 wins and 5
losses. David Shultz again led the team with a .672
average.
Keith Oldham assumed the manager position in
2003 and had a record of 7 wins and 9 losses. Jerry
Albee lead the hitters at.628, and Wayne Kidd hit.564.
Keith improved the team to a 12 win and 6 loss
record in 2004. Beef O’ Brady’s became the post game
“hot spot” to appease the wives, and Keith accepted
their offer to sponsor us. Leading hitters were Ken Etycheson.629,
Don Stargell.585, Dan Girard.561, Tony
Emanuele.551, Gary Bender.542, Scott Werling.510.
In 2005 Jim Dinsmore returned to the manager’s
position and led the team to a 12 win and 7 loss season.
Outstanding players on that team were shortstop
Tony “Silk” Emanuele and pitcher Kenny “Quickpitch”
Eytcheson. “Silk” hit for power and a high average and
had an outstanding arm. “Quick Pitch” hurled an unheard
of 3 shutouts that season. The most noteworthy
development of the season was the rotating post Beef
O’ Brady’s Crown Royal parties initiated by “Founding
Father” Art Klaviter.
In 2006 manager Dinsmore’s team finished in 2 nd
place with a record of 14 wins and 4 losses. Leading
hitters that season were “Quick Pitch” Eytcheson.628,
“Hammer” Mason.583, “Silk” Emanuele.556, “Scrap
Iron” Werling.553, “Puck” McNamara.510.
17
In 2007, manager Jim Dinsmore’s final season,
Lake Fairways again finished in 2 nd place with a record
of 16 wins and 4 losses. Leading batters in manager
Dinsmore’s lineup were “Poopsie” Albee.551, Angelo
DelValle.542, “Roadrunner” Shultz.511. At the end of
the season, a softball committee was formed to provide
some needed structure to the team. Members of the
first group were manager “Scrap Iron” Werling, “Quick
Pitch” Eytcheson, “Roadrunner” Shultz, “Puck”
McNamara, “Hammer” Mason.
In 2008 Scott “Scrap Iron” Werling became playermanager.
The team finished in 2 nd place with a record
of 17 wins and 3 losses. Leading hitter were Tom
“Smooth” Dabbs.643, David “Roadrunner” Shultz.635,
Tony “Silk” Emanuele.619. The softball committee
members took on defined rolls this season. “Scrap
Iron” Werling was in charge of selecting players for the
team, making batting lineups, and all things game related.
“Scrap Iron” was also responsible for bidding the
house painting jobs and organizing the crews. “Quick
Pitch” Eytcheson assumed the duties of chairman.
“Roadrunner” Shultz, as social chairman, searched for
post game restaurants and sponsors, and organized
team parties. “Puck” McNamara was responsible for
organizing set-up and clean-up crews for group events
at the club house. “Hammer” Mason was the uniform
and equipment procurer, Informer news correspondent,
and team Historian. “FF” Klaviter came on board
as Treasurer for the group.
Scrap Iron’s 2009 team again finished with a record
of 17 wins and 3 losses. Newcomer Jerry “Rifle”
Kelly led the hitters with a.698 average. “Smooth”
Dabbs finished at.611.
Another 2 nd place finish occurred in 2010. “Scrap
Iron’s” charges won 15 and lost 3. Pounding the ball at
a.721 clip, George Sams led the hitters. “Smooth”
Dabbs slugged out a.627 average.
2011 turned out to be player-manager “Scrap Iron”
Werling’s last year as manager. For the 6 th year in a
row Lake Fairways finished in 2 nd place with a record of
17 wins and 3 losses. Leading hitters were “Smooth”
Dabbs.610, “Rifle” Kelly.571, “Scrap Iron” Werling.560.
“Redman” Kraby joined the committee as the new setup
and clean-up contact person. “General” McReelis
took charge of the painting team.
Wayne “Captain” Kidd assumed the managerial
reins in 2012 and led the team to 16 wins and 3 losses,
good for a 3 rd place finish. Leading batters were “Scuba
Honey” Huss.621, “Woodrow” Bender.595, “Ace” Durbin.583,
“Scrap Iron” Werling.566. The highlight of the
season was beating the Rookies 3 to 2 and ending their
59 game winning streak.
A “Big Thank You” goes out to Jim Steele, Keith
Oldham, and Nancy Dreyer for their help in gathering
information and “FF” Klaviter for publishing.
RALLY FOR THE CURE UPDATE
Submitted by: Sandie Gordon and Marcia Stinson
We were so pleased at all that took part in the Rally
event: the Men, 18 Hole Ladies and the 9 Hole ladies.
With such great participation plus donations, we
sent a check to the Rally for $2600.
So many to thank such as:
Betty Fox for sitting in the cold for both the 18 hole
and 9 hole ladies to give out balls to those who got on
the 7 th green plus the measuring for who was the closest.
Mary Jane Gagnier for auctioning off her parking
spot in front of the Pro Shop during the summer while
she wasn’t here.
Don Sbabo for taking pictures and also helping to
organize them.
Mary McLimans for making and donating the beautiful
embroidered Rally pillows, plus special Rally pins
and very special Rally key chains. All with the Pink
Ribbon.
To all the ladies who helped fill all the Rally bags.
The Informer for their monetary donation.
Winners of shoes:
Men: Steve McLimans
18 Hole Ladies: Sandie Gordon*
9 Hole Ladies: Barbara Breeden
*No it wasn’t fixed. My teammates witnessed the
shot and Betty Fox measured it. I only beat out Adriana
Watkins by two inches.
Thank you everyone, for a very successful 2013
Rally.
Did You Know?...Medicare doesn’t pay
for Long-Term Care
PLANNING FOR LONG-TERM CARE
Long-term care includes medical and non-medical care
for people who have a chronic illness or disability.
Non-medical care includes non-skilled personal care
assistance, such as help with everyday activities, like
dressing, bathing, and using the bathroom. At least
70% of people over 65 will need long-term care services
at some point. Medicare and most health insurance
plans, including Medicare Supplement Insurance
(Medigap) policies don’t pay for this type of
care, also called “custodial care.” Medicare only
pays for medi- cally-necessary skilled nursing facility
care or home health care if you meet certain conditions.
Long-term care can be provided at home, in the community,
in assisted living, or in a nursing home. It’s
important to start planning for long-term care now to
maintain your independence and to make sure you get
the care you may need in the future.
PAYING FOR LONG-TERM CARE
Long-term Care Insurance – This type of private insur-
ance policy can help pay for many types of long-term
care, including both skilled and non-skilled (custodial)
care. Long-term care insurance can vary widely. Some
policies may cover only nursing home care. Others
may include coverage for a range of services, like adult
day care, assisted living, medical equipment, and infor-
mal home care. Note: Long-term care insurance
doesn’t replace your Medicare coverage.
Your current or former employer or union may offer
long-term care insurance. Current and retired Federal
employees, active and retired members of the uni-
formed services, and their qualified relatives can apply
for coverage under the Federal Long-term Care Insur-
ance Program.
Personal Resources – You can use your savings to pay
for long-term care. Some insurance companies let you
use your life insurance policy to pay for long-term
care. ASK YOUR INSURANCE AGENT HOW
THIS
WORKS.
Other Private Options – Besides long-term care insur-
ance and personal resources, you may choose to pay for
long-term care through a trust or annuity. The best option
for you depends on your age, health status, risk of
needing long-term care, and your personal financial
situation. (Taken from the 2012 Medicare & You Hand-
book)
I can offer many different options for covering your
long-term care needs. Contact Kathy Thousand, a con-
tracted, licensed insurance sales agent, at (239) 851-
website at www.851-7457.com. Next month we’ll
talk about Extra Help paying for Medicare prescription
drug coverage.
