Introduction
Loxton High School students continue to
excel on the local, state and national
stage. Their achievements are across
many fields; academic, sporting, and
cultural. Our school is outstanding in its
preparation of young people for a
prosperous and fulfilling future.
Our school continually looks for
opportunities to further engage young
people in their school lives. Our
experience is that success in one area of
a person’s life will flow through and
have a positive impact on all other
aspects of their life.
This report is reflective of the above and
highlights but some of the achievements
of our students. It is also reflective of
both current initiatives and long held
traditions.
Academic Achievement
Our core business is teaching and
learning. Our focus and purpose is to
support every student to achieve his or
her full potential.
Loxton High School is well recognised
and respected for its academic tradition.
Our Year 12 results again reflect our
school’s commitment to providing a
high quality and comprehensive
education for all students. Twenty four
Year 12 students achieved a TER above
80 and ten of these a TER above 90.
These results reflect hard work by
students and strong support from skilled
and committed teachers.
The strength of these results is best
reflected when the school’s combined A
and B grades are compared with the
State average. Loxton High School’s
combined percentage is 64.6 compared
with a State average of 55.7.
Alex Falcinella was the school’s most
outstanding student for 2010 with a
Tertiary Entrance Ranking of 99.80.
Merit Certificates (a score of 20) were
awarded to:
Enrolments
We commenced the school year with an
enrolment of 623 students. Included in
this figure are 132 Year 8 students and
six students who will be studying off
campus as part of the new Riverland
Innovative Community Action Network
(ICAN).
Staffing
Our staff comprises 47 full and part-time
teachers, 13 School Services Officers
including 6 specially working with
students with learning difficulties, and
an Aboriginal Community Education
Officer. We also employ staff working
in the areas of agriculture, grounds,
ma i nte n a nce, a nd informa tio n
technology.
SPORTING ACHIEVEMENTS
Our school has a strong commitment to
physical activity through both the
curriculum and extra curricular
activities. This commitment is based on
the belief of “healthy body, healthy
mind.” Our curriculum is structured to
maximise student access to physical
activity. The long tradition of success
on the sporting field of Loxton High
School is well recognised throughout
our state. 2011 has been another
outstanding year in relation to the
sporting achievement of our school.
Swimming
Our Swimming Carnival is always a
very enjoyable and successful day.
There is always mass participation on
the part of our students and it is this that
underpins the success of our school in so
many areas. Again there were many
notable individual efforts by our
students and many displays of courage
and commitment. Our school also
continued its domination of Riverland
swimming and again performed
creditably in Adelaide.
Athletics
The tradition of students of Loxton High
School displaying commitment, a
determination to succeed, sportsmanship
and a desire to give of their personal
best was again evident throughout our
athletics season. The season culminated
in Adelaide with our boys winning
Division A1 for the sixth consecutive
year. The ongoing success of our
students in athletics is reflective of mass
participation, the work ethic of our
students, the role modelling of our
senior students and the dedication of our
staff.
Volleyball
Volleyball continues to be a focus for
our school with approximately a quarter
of our students participating on a weekly
basis. Volleyball plays a key role in the
development of our school’s positive
and productive culture.
This year we have taken our equal
largest team to the Australian Schools
National Volleyball championships in
Melbourne. In all some 127 students,
parents and staff have been involved.
Our volleyball program further develops
a strong sense of belonging in our
students towards their school.
Pedal Prix
Pedal Prix offers many wonderful
experiences for our students. Our
program relies heavily on parental
support and we thank the many parents
who make the time to support their
students both in their studies and in the
extra curricular activities of our school.
We also acknowledge the Loxton
Waikerie District Council for their
recent financial support of this program.
The funding received from Council will
go towards the design and purchasing of
our next vehicle which will reflect
leading-edge technology in relation to
this sport.
The professional manner in which we
undertake our Pedal Prix program has
earned the respect of all participating
schools and the event organisers.
CURRICULUM
Whilst our students are exposed to and
engaged in a wide variety of extra
curricular activities, our core business is
teaching and learning. As an
organisation we are focussed on
continuous improvement which, in
curriculum terms, manifests itself in a
curriculum that is engaging, relevant and
challenging for all students. The
curriculum must foster in all students the
knowledge and skills essential for solid
citizenship and a productive and
fulfilling life.
SACE
2009 saw the commencement of the
NewSACE into South Australian
Schools with the introduction of the
Personal Learning Plan into Year 10.
This year the same cohort of students
completed Stage 2 (Year 12) of the
NewSACE. The introduction of the
NewSACE led us over the past three
years to review our subject offerings at
Year 11 and 12, the structure of our
timetable which is the vehicle for
delivering our curriculum and the
structure of our day.
Our students have made a sound
LOXTON HIGH SCHOOL 3
transition into the NewSACE which is
reflective of effective planning and
review and countless hours of
preparation by staff.
Reporting Student Achievement
This year we have sent home a written
Progress Report prior to parent
interviews for all year levels. We
believe this Progress Report has
strengthened our reporting on student
achievement and has generated more indepth
discussion at interview time. Our
school now reports comprehensively in
written form four times a year on student
progress and achievement.
Science
2011 is the International Year of
Chemistry and with this in mind it is
appropriate to highlight the
achievements of our students in
Chemistry.
In January this year Alex Falcinella
received a Merit Certificate for his
outstanding results in Year 12
Chemistry. In the Royal Australian
Chemical Institute Analysis Competition
Gold medals were awarded to Cohen
Feher, Aimee Horsfall and Mathew
Ormay.
As with a number of our other
curriculum areas students in Science
participated in a number of State and
National academic competitions with
outstanding results. Students interested
in a career in Science have visited
Adelaide University, Flinders
University, the Waite Institute and in
addition, Year 10 students have been
introduced to Nanotechnology.
Agricultural Studies
Agricultural Studies is an expanding
curriculum area undoubtedly supported
by the quality of the facilities and the
learning environment our students now
have access to. Our students learn about
sheep husbandry, cattle husbandry,
viticulture, horticulture, vegetable
production, chicken production, the
propagation of native vegetation and the
concept of value adding. However, it
has been the led steer competition that in
recent years has given the studying of
agriculture added impetus.
Led Steer Competition
The whole Led Steer process is complex
and places high demands on our
student’s organisational skills and sense
of responsibility. Twelve students and
five cattle were involved in this years
program. One of our steers placed first
in its category and two more placed
second in their respective categories
which is an outstanding effort and a
reflection of the quality of the cattle
involved. Our school won the shield for
the best presented school which is again
a reflection of our students organisation
and cattle husbandry.
Growsmart
Our school has also made a strong
commitment to the Growsmart program.
The purpose of Growsmart is to
encourage students to consider a career
in Science and possibly in Agriculture.
Mathematics
Mathematics continues to be a strength
of the teaching and learning at Loxton
High School as evidenced by our Year
12 and Naplan results. Our students
continue to excel in State and National
competitions. Specialist Mathematics
continues to be studied by students in
Year 12 and particularly those
committed to undertake Engineering or
Science as a career pathway.
Literacy
Both the State and Australian
Governments have highlighted literacy
as a focus. Whole-School Literacy has
been and remains a focus of our school
as identified in our Site Improvement
Plan. All staff have been trained in the
“Stepping Out” program which is a
whole-of-school approach to teaching
literacy across all curriculum areas.
Literacy is taught by every teacher in
every subject in our school. In addition,
students at all levels have been actively
engaged in learning activities aimed at
further developing their literacy skills
including a 50 word story competition,
inter class debating, poetry
competitions, the Premier’s Reading
Challenge, Meet the Writers, film
reviews, public speaking, State and
National competitions and attending and
critiquing live theatre performances.
This year fifteen staff members
expanded their knowledge of literacy
teaching through participating in a
comprehensive program entitled “How
Language Works”.
Technology
Information and Communication
Technology continues to be a priority in
the school’s Site Improvement Plan,
and, as such, we have continued to
invest heavily in this area. Technology
is utilised in enhancing the learning of
students both within and outside the
classroom.
This year our school received an
additional 225 laptops as the second
stage of the Commonwealth
Government’s Digital Education
Revolution. Students have access to
four computer suites, a Clean
Technologies suite, Resource Centre
computers and 355 laptops on portable
trolleys and in pods throughout the
school. This has bought our ratio of
computers to students to almost 1:1.
Stage 2 of the implementation of our
wireless network has been completed.
This has given students and staff the
ability to access our Curriculum network
and the Internet throughout the entire
school.
The Arts
The cultivation of an interest in the Arts
is as much about a person’s well being
as it is about the ongoing development
of knowledge and skills. Our school
continues to offer a strong Arts
curriculum encompassing music, drama,
dance, visual arts, and multimedia.
Our Concert Band continues to maintain
its profile at community events
including the Riverland Field Days. The
annual Arts Evening provides an
opportunity for our students to display
their talents in music, dance, acting and
singing. Our senior Art students have
the opportunity to display their work at
the Loxton Art Gallery. This year five
pieces of art created by three of our Year
12 students, Alyssa Siplsbury, Aimee
Horsfall and Jesse Reilly have been
choosen for the SACE Art Exhibition in
Adelaide which is an outstanding
4 LOXTON HIGH SCHOOL
achievement.
Outdoor Education
Earlier this year I had the privilege of
bushwalking for three days, with our
Year 11 Outdoor Education students, at
Deep Creek Conservation Park. The
three days were challenging and it is not
often in this day and age that we place
ourselves in a situation which is outside
our usual comfort zone. At the end of
the walk a great sense of achievement
was felt by all.
Clearly, challenging situations build
both skills and strength of character.
Outdoor Education is really about an
appreciation for the environment and
about personal development.
Australian Curriculum
The development of a common
curriculum between States makes sense
in relation to the increasingly transient
nature of the Australian population and
also in relation to the national testing of
students.
This year we have been a pilot school
for the Humanities and Social Sciences
(HASS) curriculum. This has involved
the development and teaching of units of
work in History and Geography and
charting a pathway for schools as they
transition from the Society and
Environment SACSA framework to the
HASS Australian Curriculum.
Naplan
Our school makes a conscious decision
to exempt no students from sitting the
Year 9 National Literacy and Numeracy
Tests (Naplan). As a school we value
data on student achievement and utilise
this in planning our teaching and
learning programs.
As is evidenced in the following table
our school has been successful in
moving students above the national
average in all but the Upper Level for
Reading.
Exchange Students
The school actively encourages and
promotes student exchanges. This year
we welcomed to our school Danika
Grant, a Rotary Exchange student from
New Zealand, in a reciprocal
arrangement with Georgina Collins. We
also welcomed to our school Paula
Aspizua Rubio from Spain and Hannah
Fraas from Norway.
Our German Language Exchange
remains a highly valued aspect of our
school curriculum. This year we have
three students, Danika Spilsbury,
Hannah Kroemer and Kelsey Reilly
studying in Germany for nine weeks.
Spirit of Anzac
Students from Loxton High School have
been entering the coveted Spirit of
Anzac competition for the past four
years. Since this time we have had six
students earn the honour of representing
South Australia at the Anzac Day
celebrations in Northern France
including, Edward James and Nick
Falcinella this year. The selection is
rigorous and the boys are to be highly
commended on their achievement. Such
experiences are life changing.
Kokoda
Ellie Garrard this year was selected to
walk the Kokoda Trail as a participant in
the Kokoda Youth Leadership
Challenge. Walking conditions were
extremely difficult. Ellie described her
walk as an extremely emotional and
very intense experience.
Duke of Edinburgh
The aim of the Duke of Edinburgh
Award program is for young people to
develop skills and experience that will
stand them in good stead for their
futures.
This year we had two Year 9 classes
undertake the program for a semester
each. Students have learned skills and
contributed to the community through
participating in the Relay For Life,
volunteering for LASS, learning
camping and survival skills and
undertaking an Adventurous Journey.
We had students awarded Bronze and
Silver Medallions. Every student who
successfully undertakes the Duke of Ed
Program is awarded ten SACE credits.
Year 7/8 Transition
Our Transition program for Year 7
students about to enter high school is
well recognised throughout the state as a
blue print for others to follow. The
transition program is built upon close
and effective working relationships with
our feeder primary schools. The
program involves two one-day visits by
Year 7 students plus an evening social
with our current Year 8s. It also
involves a parent information evening
and our Middle School Coordinator and
School Counsellors visiting every feeder
school. Having commenced Year 8 this
year our students also had a day at the
Loxton Swimming Pool learning the
novelty events for the Swimming
Carnival. They have also had a day at
the Monash Playground organised by
our Prefects where they participated in
team building activities.
Ballarat
Ninety Year 9 students again
participated in a four-day excursion to
Ballarat. The excursion involves
students staying in the grounds of
Sovereign Hill and participating in
historical activities both within and
outside the town. This excursion gives
students an extensive appreciation of
Australian History and rural life as
experienced throughout the nineteen
hundreds.
Health & Physical Education
The teaching of P.E. is today very
different from that of even a few years
ago. For example, this year our P.E.
faculty purchased Dartfish at a cost of
$5,000. Dartfish is a computer program
which, following filming, allows
students to analyse their performance
during training or whilst in competition.
Home Economics
The redevelopment of our Home
Economics facilities now means that our
students develop their knowledge and
skills in a high quality facility. Our
Home Economics students this year
participated in the Riverland Field Days
and have also catered for a number of
events. Our Hospitality students have
participated in a trip to Adelaide aimed
at expanding their knowledge of training
and employment options. We had
students participate in the Apex Teenage
Fashion Awards utilizing the skills
learned through studying fabrics.
Australian Business Week
In Week 8, Term 4, Year 10 students
participated in the Australian Business
Week (ABW) for the first time. ABW
5 LOXTON HIGH SCHOOL
gives students a greater understanding of
business as they take over and run their
own simulated company. Students
develop an understanding of finance and
business strategy, marketing operations,
and managing a broad range of business
resources, including personnel
management.
Australian School Based
Appreticeships
Our school currently has 41 School
Based Apprentices and Trainees,
primarily in Years 11 and 12. School
Based Apprenticeships allow students to
commence their apprenticeship studies
whilst undertaking their SACE. Their
apprenticeship and traineeship studies
involve studying Certificate II or III in
their chosen trade area. They also
involve at least one day a week in onthe-job
training.
Innovative Community Action
Network/Flexible Learning Options.
This year we engaged the services of
Madec and Bedford to both case manage
and develop programs for students not
engaged in mainstream schooling. The
purpose of these flexible learning
options is to engage students currently
not attending school in some form of
learning with the aim of developing the
literacy, numeracy and life skills needed
to gain employment.
EXTRA CURRICULAR
As mentioned previously our school is
committed to providing many and varied
experiences for our students.
Participation in extra curricular activities
undoubtedly leads to students being
more fully engaged in their learning and
better prepared for citizenship.
Musical
Our musical Oliver was another
outstanding success. A highlight was
the large number of younger students
from Years 8 and 9 who were in the
cast. This augers well for the future of
our Musicals. A second highlight for
me was the mentoring roll played by our
Senior students.
Our musicals are a massive, whole of
school, undertaking. I highly value the
time that many of our staff put into these
productions. Our students play critical
roles both on and off the stage. I also
thank our parents for their contributions
and support.
I particularly acknowledge the
contribution and commitment of Mrs
Margaret Wormald as director.
Margaret’s approach added to the joy of
the musical for all involved. With each
school production comes life long
memories.
Gymkhana
This year we had three students
participate in the Clare Interschool
Gymkhana. There is a growing interest
in horse riding and we look to see the
number of students representing our
school in this event grow in the years to
come.
Centenary Feature
Our school has played a key role in the
development of Loxton’s Centenary
Feature. We have contributed
financially to its construction along with
the other Loxton schools. We have also
been heavily involved in the landscaping
of the surrounding area. Such activities
develop in our students both a spirit of
generosity and a sense of belonging.
Reunions
Our school takes great pleasure in
assisting people organising reunions. I
acknowledge the time and effort people
invest in organising these weekends.
Our school has had five reunions this
year.
Ride for Research
A healthy spirit of generosity is about
personal and collective giving in support
of others. Our Ride/Walk for Research
in Term 3 was an outstanding success
with our students displaying a very
healthy spirit of generosity. The day
raised $2633 in support of Heart
Research undertaken through the
Women’s and Children’s Hospital. The
loss of Tiarna Spilsbury earlier in the
year provided the context for the
importance and significance of this day.
Student Support
Our school is committed to leaving no
stone unturned when it comes to giving
students every opportunity to succeed at
school. This year we engaged the
services of a Youth Worker. We have
continued with our mentoring program
and are indebted to the community
members who volunteer their time. This
support is in addition to our two student
counsellors and our chaplain. We also
engage the services of Youth
Connections and fund three part-time
tutors to support students in their
learning. We have established a Student
Learning Centre to further support
students at risk with their learning.
Breakfast
Many schools, like ourselves, run a
Breakfast Program at least one morning
of each week. As a school we are
indebted to members of our Chaplaincy
Support Group who give of their time to
organise breakfast for our students every
Wednesday and Friday morning.
Student Leadership
Our prefects this year have been
outstanding in the leadership they have
provided for our students. They have
worked exceedingly hard as evidenced
by the numerous activities they have
organised including the Ride/Walk for
Research, Year 8 Fun Day, casual days,
Year level socials and assemblies. They
have also had representation on all
Governing Council sub committees.
Their contribution this year has been
exceptional and in doing so have added
to the culture of our school whilst at the
same time honing their leadership skills.
Our SRC went about its roles and
responsibilities with diligence. They
have worked closely with our prefects.
They have organised casual days and
lunch time activities. They have
represented the views of students at
Governing Council meetings thereby
impacting on the policies and direction
of our school.
Students also gain valuable leadership
skills through the roles of House Leader
and being part of teams charged with
responsibilities such as organising The
6 LOXTON HIGH SCHOOL
Prom, Year 12 Graduation Dinner and
various trips, camps and excursions.
Student Opinion Survey
The student opinion survey clearly
indicated that they feel well supported
and well cared for in their learning.
Ninety four percent of students felt that
“This school encourages students to
have a sense of pride in their
achievement” and eighty five percent of
students felt that “If I am having
difficulty learning something, my
teachers always help.” Eighty eight
percent of students stated that “they are
happy to be at this school” and most
students felt that they know how well
they are achieving at school (89%).
Students rated our school very highly in
the area of “relationships and
communication.” Eighty seven percent
of students felt involved in the decision
making processes of the school. Student
opinion also supports the school focus to
continue to build a curriculum that is
engaging and relevant.
Parent Participation
Governing Council
Our Governing Council plays a pivotal
role in the leadership and management of
our school. Members of Governing
Council represent the parents of our school
and provide sound and considered advice
in relation to a wide range of issues.
I thank our Governing Councillors for
their preparedness to contribute to the
ongoing development of our school. I
particularly acknowledge the personal
support, work ethic, commitment and
determination of Mr Richard Saunders as
chairperson for the past seven years.
Richard’s leadership of Governing Council
has been forthright and insightful. His
contribution to our school has been
absolutely invaluable.
Parents In Partnership
Parents In Partnership took on a
somewhat different format this year.
The focus of Parents In Partnership is to
provide parents with information about
our school and about issues affecting
their children. This year our meetings
focussed on topics including Post
Secondary Pathways, Cyber Safety and
Literacy in the Adolescent years. I
acknowledge the commitment and
enthusiasm of Messrs Sandy Kanizay,
Tiffany Harris and Cathy Crambrook as
the executive of PIP.
Continental
Our Continental was again a very
successful evening and we are indebted
to families and community members
who joined us for the evening. It is
always a pleasure to host our
community. Our Continental this year
raised in excess of $23,000.
Parent Opinion Survey
As a school we value feedback.
Feedback both affirms that which we are
doing well and identifies areas for
further development.
The Parent Opinion Survey again clearly
indicated strong support for our school
in terms of its culture and traditions.
Ninety two percent of parents believe
their student “Receives high quality
teaching at this school” and one hundred
percent of parents stated that “The
school has high expectations of its
students.” One hundred percent of
parents also believe that “Teachers at
this school really want my child to
learn” and that our school “Has an
excellent learning environment”. Ninety
six percent of parents believe “My child
is motivated to learn at school” and the
same percentage declared that “This
school provides a safe and secure
learning environment.”
Education is a partnership and we
indebted to our families for their
ongoing support and involvement.
FACILITIES
As a school community we have
equipment, facilities and a learning
environment to be truly proud of. We
are committed to providing students
with a learning environment of the
highest quality. Facilities development
in any school or organisation is ongoing.
within.
Farewell
Mrs Louise Barry relocates to Mildura at
the completion of this school year.
Louise began teaching at Loxton High
School in 1976 and became a Senior
Mistress in 1986. In 2009 Louise
became Assistant Principal a role she
has fulfilled with distinction. Louise is
an outstanding teacher, administrator
and person. Her contribution to our
school has been second to none. We
wish Louise and Chris enjoyment and
fulfillment in their careers and happiness
in their lives. Both will be greatly
missed by our school and community.
Retirement
The end of this year sees me retiring
from education after thirty three years
and more significantly retiring as
Principal of Loxton High School after
fifteen years. It has been a pleasure and
a privilege to serve the community as
Principal of this exceptional school. I
acknowledge the support I have received
over my time as Principal from our
highly talented and committed staff. I
also acknowledge the support I have
received from the Loxton and wider
Riverland communities. The traditions
of our school remain strong. Our focus
on continuous improvement guarantees
a rich and exciting future.
I wish everyone a safe and enjoyable
Christmas and every happiness for the
future.
