All the e-retail respondents mentioned improved customer service as one <strong>of</strong><br />

the ways e-retailers could maintain customer loyalty. These respondents<br />

recommend that e-retailers must leverage customer information for the<br />

effective management <strong>of</strong> customer relationships on the Internet. Such<br />

strategy, according to the e-retailers interviewed suggests something much<br />

more radical than the basic e-<strong>commerce</strong> approach adopted by many e-retail<br />

businesses at the moment. It calls for a re-engineering <strong>of</strong> processes and<br />

structures focused around key customer groups, rather than product or<br />

service divisions. It also implies cross-functional, team working. As Siegel<br />

(2000:107) puts it:<br />

"The customer-led company has a broad interface across which all<br />

employees can get to know their customers. Employees invite customers in<br />

to collaborate on new products, support systems, and methodologies.<br />

Facilitating those interactions will take new communication skills, new tools,<br />

and the ability to move people in and out <strong>of</strong>product teams easily."<br />

In order for e-retailers to attract a higher percentage <strong>of</strong> e-customers, they will<br />

need to take their (e-customers) suggestions into consideration in order to<br />

attract new ones as well as retain loyal customers.<br />

Impact <strong>of</strong>e-retailing on business strategy<br />

The entire e-retail managers noted that e-retailing has provided them with an<br />

opportunity to maintain a global reach and to promote their services to a<br />

wider audience. 43% believe that e-retailing helped them to increase the<br />

company pr<strong>of</strong>it margin, 57% felt e-retailing has proVided them with world wide<br />

visibility and 71% believed e-retailing has assisted them in maintaining the<br />

company's accessibility to customers. 43% mentioned that e-retailing<br />

enabled them to incorporate targeted marketing, shorten transaction times<br />

(better customer service) and reduce manpower. 29% <strong>of</strong> the respondents
