The sterilant is sold in powder form in 81 gm pots and is sufficient to<br />

make up 5 litres of solution once diluted.


Safety Related Aspects of<br />

<strong>PeraSafe</strong> Solution<br />

Properties: Appearance: Clear, blue solution, faint peracetyl type odour.<br />

PH: 8.0<br />

Flash point: Not flammable<br />

Hazard<br />

Summary: The solution is of low acute toxicity to users. Once diluted, skin irritation is<br />

unlikely to cause a problem unless an individual is particularly sensitive to<br />

<strong>PeraSafe</strong> or any of its components. With the eye, irritation is possible and this<br />

must be treated immediately.<br />

No inhalation problems are expected under normal conditions. Preparation of<br />

the in-use solution at the correct temperature (30-40 0 ) allows minimal release<br />

of odour to the atmosphere. Temperatures in excess of 40 o C for preparation<br />

and storage of solution are not recommended, however.<br />

First Aid<br />

Guidance: Eye: Irrigate thoroughly with water or eye wash. Seek<br />

medical advice if irritation persists.<br />

Skin: Remove contaminated clothing and rinse thoroughly with water.<br />

Ingestion: Wash out mouth and drink plenty of water. Seek medical<br />

advice if a significant quantity ingested.<br />

Inhalation: Remove affected person to fresh air.<br />

Handling,<br />

Storage and<br />

Spillage: <strong>PeraSafe</strong> is incompatible in direct contact with strong alkalis,<br />

Hypochlorites and cationic detergents. Hospital neutral<br />

detergents are acceptable for use with <strong>PeraSafe</strong>.<br />

Store the solution in clean plastic containers under cool conditions and use<br />

within 24 hours of preparation.<br />

<strong>PeraSafe</strong> solution does not cause any serious environmental problems, when<br />

diluted to waste with water via a foul sewer drain.
