under its Article 1 and following on <strong>the</strong> one hand<br />

and by Articles 97, 99 and 101 of Environmental<br />

Law on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r.”<br />

585. The state of Côte d’Ivoire, three victims’ groups<br />

and <strong>the</strong> representatives of two deceased individuals<br />

attached <strong>the</strong>ir claim to <strong>the</strong> prosecution as<br />

“parties civiles”, claiming damages (<strong>the</strong> state of<br />

Côte d’Ivoire had originally abandoned its “partie<br />

civile” claim after <strong>the</strong> settlement with Trafigura<br />

but started it again once charges against <strong>the</strong><br />

Trafigura parties had been dropped). Although<br />

<strong>the</strong> court was due to make a decision on <strong>the</strong>se<br />

claims at <strong>the</strong> time of <strong>the</strong> trial, <strong>the</strong> decision was<br />

postponed to a subsequent hearing. As at April<br />

2011, this decision was still pending. After <strong>the</strong><br />

trial, fur<strong>the</strong>r claims were commenced on behalf<br />

of deceased individuals against Trafigura and<br />

<strong>the</strong> state of Côte d’Ivoire. These claims are also<br />
