A Ministry That Uses All I Ever Learned
by Sister Michaelette, SS.C.M.
As Administrator of the Motherhouse of the Sisters
of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Danville, I have an
opportunity to wear a number of hats and exercise a variety
of abilities and talents. In retrospect, I can see how my life
before the convent and my
earlier experiences as a Sister
help me to deal with my current
responsibilities.
When I was in sixth
grade our family moved to
Hazleton where I attended St.
Joseph School and I had SSCM
Sisters Esther, Ulphia and
Emma as teachers. Sister Emma
whom I greatly admired taught
me piano. Involvement in
parish activities and church
liturgies kept me busy and
taught me to manage my time
and juggle responsibilities.
Second oldest in a family of five
children, I had many
responsibilities at home, taking care of the house and
younger siblings. After I graduated from Hazleton High
School, I worked for a time at Sears in the credit department.
During this time I discerned that God was calling me to
become a Sister of Saints Cyril and Methodius.

Spring 2013
To prepare for the ministry of teaching, I attended
Cabrini College and then the University of Dayton. After I
taught grades 3, 6, 7 and 8 in Pennsylvania and South
Carolina I served as principal of St. Columba School in
Bloomsburg. My next mission was Director of Religious
Education at Sacred Heart Church in Peckville.
All of my varied experiences thus far have enabled
me to collect the skills needed to be Motherhouse
Administrator: organization, the ability to deal with many
different types of people, a calm spirit and a compassionate
and welcoming presence. And I am still learning!
After St. Cyril Academy closed in 1999, the
Congregation inaugurated a Spiritual Center which provides
days of recollection, retreats (preached, directed and
private), and a variety of spiritual programs. Parish groups
and other types of organizations often schedule gatherings
for spiritual renewal. Guests to the Motherhouse contact
me for accommodations. Among the groups who regularly
visit are: Tres Dias men and women, Geisinger chaplains,
Lutheran pastors, the Society of the Holy Trinity, Marywood

the Episcopal Diocese of Central PA and the Harrisburg
Diocese Parish Directors of Education.
Meetings with the maintenance, housekeeping and
dietary departments help me to see to the general upkeep
of the Motherhouse, the Villa and Bethany. Tasks ranging
from minor to major fill my waking hours: in the evening I
make sure all the outside doors are locked, for safety’s sake;
someone stuck in the elevator gets my undivided attention,
as does a dishwasher that fails to operate when trays of
dishes are lined up to be washed.
Thanks to Sister Emma’s piano instruction and a
year of music study at Marywood, I have the privilege of
supervising the celebration of liturgy in the Basilica. Several

pour at the Mothers’ Tea for the St. Cyril Preschool and
Kindergarten held annually in September in the Villa sunparlor.

Sisters and I share the planning of music for Masses and
Liturgy of the Hours and I provide keyboard
accompaniment.
An activity I especially enjoy and look forward to
each Tuesday is teaching music to the Preschool and
Kindergarten classes at St. Cyril. Youngsters, of course,
respond to music with delight and enthusiasm, and I am
happy to experience their joy in singing and dramatizing
the words they sing. Seasonal programs for Halloween,
Thanksgiving, Christmas and graduation determine the
repertoire and give the students a forum for performance.
As I celebrate my Golden Jubilee this year, I can
rejoice not only for my fifty years as a religious but for the
varied ministries God has called
me to perform. I thank Him for
the graces He has given me to
serve in education, parish
ministry and now as
Motherhouse Administrator.

through the musical selections the
children have memorized over the
course of several months. It is a joy
to sing with these enthusiastic,
optimistic and uninhibited
students. They find delight in what
they sing and the joy they
experience from the melodies and
lyrics can be easily measured by the
volume they use for each song!

Thirty-seven outstanding high school Juniors and
Seniors were recognized by the Sisters of Saints Cyril and
Methodius as Servant Leaders in a Sunday afternoon
ceremony on October 28, 2012. Nominated by their parish
youth ministers or pastors, these young people from the
dioceses of Harrisburg and Scranton PA and Bridgeport CT
have already proven that they understand the message of
Jesus to serve and not be served.
Invited to identify a mentor, most used the
opportunity to recognize the influence of their parents,
grandparents, teachers, pastors and others who modeled
servant leadership for them.
At the same event, the Sisters of Saints Cyril and
Methodius recognized the Lifetime Commitment to Servant
Leadership of adults in our four areas of ministry. Honored
were: Drs. James and Agnes Dinn for Evangelization, Sister
M. John Vianney for Ecumenism, Mrs. Bonnie Riegel for
Education and Mrs. Peggy Evans for Eldercare.

The Martyrs of El Salvador
Remembering Those Whose Faith Cost Them the Most Possible
From November 29-December 6, 2012, Sister Barbara
Sable was privileged to represent the Sisters of Saints Cyril
and Methodius as part of a delegation to El Salvador
commemorating the 32 nd anniversary of the martyrdom of
the four North American Churchwomen: Jean Donovan,
Dorothy Kazel, OSU, Maura Clarke, MM, and Ita Ford, MM.
The delegation was sponsored by SHARE Foundation and
co-sponsored by the Leadership Conference of Women
Religious (LCWR).
The SHARE foundation is an international nonprofit
organization that accompanies poor communities of
El Salvador as they work for economic justice and sustainable
development.
The delegation included 60 members including 40
women religious from 30 congregations, many of whom had
served in Central or South America as missionaries. The
week was a graced pilgrimage. During the week Sister

Romero was martyred and at the Cathedral where he is
buried and at the University of Central America (UCA)
where the Jesuits martyrs lived and died, visited women’s
projects in rural communities, participated in a forum on
women’s issues and participated in a special event honoring
women religious who continue the work for peace and
justice across the world. The delegation met with Salvadoran
women religious and theologians working with those at the
margins, and inaugurated four scholarships in honor of Ita,
Maura, Dorothy, and Jean for young women leaders from
El Salvador to attend college.
During the week the delegation had the opportunity
to listen to people’s stories and struggles, share in their hopes
and dreams, and find inspiration in their profound faith.
Everywhere they went they were greeted with great warmth
and joy, with special welcomes everywhere for the Las
Hermanas Norte Americanas, The North American Sisters.
These experiences provided an incredible opportunity to
meet with communities and organizations involved in
bringing about social change in El Salvador, and expand their
own understanding of the realities of poverty and the
struggle for justice and human rights.

Gratitude Inspires Generosity
On the First Sunday of Advent, in the afternoon of December 2,
2012, Maria Hall was the setting for an ecumenical service sponsored
by LARC, the Lutheran-Anglican-Roman Catholic organization. R e v.
Philip Altavilla, pastor of the Cathedral of St. Peter in Scranton, was the
guest homilist. His remarks focused on the importance of gratitude for
the gifts we receive from God and willingness to share our blessings
with others. Between readings and advent hymns, area ministers and
priests watched as children and adults filled the sanctuary with gifts
purchased for children whose first names, sizes and preferences had
been distributed beforehand to Christians willing to shop for someone
in need. In keeping with God’s gift of
Jesus, it was a lavish display of generosity
which took place during the singing of
“Silent Night” in German, Slovak and
English.
Following the service, a
reception was held in the Maria Hall
dining room. Later volunteers distributed
the gifts to parents who would save them
for their children at Christmas.

On the feast of St. Joseph, March 19 th ,
Maria Joseph Manor celebrated the 51 st anniversary
of its opening at an afternoon gathering in the social
hall. Mr. Thomas Conlin, CEO of Maria Joseph,
(left), had earlier in the day raised a flag on the Manor
campus that was flown over our nation’s Capitol
the year before, on the occasion of the Manor’s 50 th
anniversary. It was donated by U.S.Senator Patrick Toomey in honor of all those veterans who have
lived at MJM over the years. Newspaper and television coverage of the festivities featuring an interview
with Sister Michael Ann alerted the area to the Manor’s milestone and the start of the 51 st year.
Unfortunately, only those who were present could enjoy the anniversary cake!
Taking Advantage of the Power of Numbers
Collaboration Generates Strength
The SSCM sisters in Charleston and Bluffton SC attended a
recent Collaboration for Ministry Initiative, held in Myrtle Beach, cosponsored
by the Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina and
the Sisters of Charity Foundation of Cleveland. It was the 8th Annual
Statewide Conference for Women Religious.
The main speaker for the conference was Macrina Wiederkehr,
OSB. Sister Macrina shared her recent book, Seven Sacred Pauses:
Living Mindfully through the Hours. Sister Macrina is a well-known
author and retreat leader on the subject of spiritual formation.
Our sisters look forward to this annual conference as it gives
each of them the opportunity to reconnect with the many congregations
of Sisters in the Diocese of Charleston, South Carolina, which spans
the whole state!

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity was
celebrated by an afternoon ecumenical service in the Basilica
of Saints Cyril and Methodius on Sunday, January 20, 2013.
At the invitation of Sister John Vianney, area ministers and
priests and Christians of several denominations came
together to reflect on this year’s theme: What does the Lord
require of us? Hymns and Scripture readings underlined
the importance of working to be the unity that Jesus prayed
for when he
walked this

Annual Lenten Day of
Reflection
On the Fifth Sunday of Lent, over one
hundred people gathered at Villa Sacred
Heart to reflect on the well-chosen Lenten
theme of Conversion: A Movement out of
Darkness into the Light.
Following the rosary, Sister
Bernadette Marie presented
her reflections on bringing
light out of darkness to
those gathered in the
Basilica. The Liturgy
followed, celebrated by
Father Heintzelman.
After a satisfying
dinner, the retreatants had
time to walk the grounds
before attending two of
three small group
presentations. The day
ended with Benediction
and a feeling of readiness
for the Easter celebration
right around the corner.

Meet the Author and Illustrator

When I was five years
old, if you asked me what I
wanted to be when I grew up I
would say a teacher and an artist.
When I was a senior in high
school I realized that some things
never change: I still wanted to be
a teacher and loved art. My high
school advisor asked if I didn’t
go to school to be a teacher, what
would my dream be? I told her I
would like to be an animator for
Disney. My advisor called
Disney and asked from where
they took interns. Most of the
schools were in CA but one was
in FL. So in 1992 I took several
art classes at Ringling School of
Art and Design in Sarasota FL. I
loved the school but hated the
heat.
Much closer to home
(and not nearly as hot), I
continued my studies at Kutztown University which is a
good school for teaching and art, a win-win for me. As artists
rarely earn enough to pay their bills, I was advised by my
college advisor to not pursue my art career. I knew God was
calling me to be a teacher so I was happy when I graduated
from Kutztown University in 1997 with a BS in Elementary
Education.
I started substituting at St. Cyril’s in 2000 and began
teaching preschool in 2001. I love teaching preschool
because so many creative craft projects are possible with little
children. Ten years of teaching helped me to recognize my
desire to write and illustrate children’s books. I started to
research schools that offered children’s literature classes.
One school stood out: Hollins University in Roanoke VA
had a summer children’s literature program. It was a perfect

fit! In July 2012, I received my Master’s Certificate in
Children’s Picture Book Illustration.
I worked on my first book for two years. It was
inspired by all the children in my class. No matter what
day it is, children always tell me “It’s almost my Birthday!”
So I decided to write a book with that title. A little
boy goes through all the months of the year as he
plans and anxiously awaits his birthday. As a
teacher I have come to learn that when you are 4
or 5, EVERY DAY is ALMOST your birthday. Some
of my students even make an appearance in this
book! It can be purchased online at https://

My experience in illustration has inspired
me to bring more art into my classroom. Last year
I created a Mini Master’s art program which taught
art appreciation to the preschool and kindergarten
students. We then had a great art show at the end
of the year. I kicked off this school year by teaching
one of my first inspirations: Walt Disney.
I am also looking forward to offering
summer studio classes here at St. Cyril’s for
Preschool and Kindergarten students in 2013.
They will be able to continue to learn about new
artists for a two week program in the summer. As
an author and illustrator, I am working on several
projects including an energetic alphabet book, a
fractured fairytale and a sequel to my birthday
book.
I am truly blessed to be living out both of my dreams
here at St. Cyril’s.
What Goes Around Comes Around
Another Preschool Teacher
In 1994, Bliss Fallon, age 5, sat next to Dana,
the only other girl in Sister Henrietta’s
Kindergarten class at the Villa. Now Bliss (at the
right) teaches in the A.M. Preschool class at St. Cyril
Preschool and Kindergarten. In her class are nine
boys and two girls.
Bliss, who began her journey with the
SSCM’s when she was five, began attending Cor ad
Cor retreats in middle school and helped with
Summer Festivals. She continued her connection with us throughout
college and was invited to become an SSCM Associate. After college
Bliss worked as a substitute teacher for a year and then became the St.
Cyril A.M. Preschool teacher. No doubt, Sister Henrietta is as proud as
we are!

All the Way to Texas to Talk Transformation
On Ash Wednesday, February 13 th , Sisters Michael
Ann, Barbara Sable, Madonna, Donna Marie and Jeanne
Ambre flew to San Antonio to attend the third part of a
Religious Formation Conference workshop entitled:
Transformation of Religious Life in North America: An
Action-Oriented Initiative. They were joined at the
workshop by the three SSCM Sisters living and working
in San Antonio: Sisters Susan Pontz, Linda Marie and
Susan Marie.
After a day of Council meetings and the celebration
of the feast of Saints Cyril and Methodius on February 14 th ,
the two-day workshop addressed the “action” phase of the
initiative, challenging the participants to put what they had
learned in the two previous workshops into a plan for
community transformation.
More Council meetings and a day of sight-seeing
made the trip to Texas a warm February memory.

Therapy--A Joint Ministry
Though Lassie and Rin Tin Tin are
household words, ZuZu has made history here at Villa
Sacred Heart. Our Gordon Setter, canine companion and
watchdog for three Sisters residing at Bethany, is making
an impact in the area as a therapy dog and a Tailwagger.
ZuZu visits the sick and the elderly at Maria Joseph
and Maria Hall. She also attends the pet therapy sessions
at the Danville State Hospital with both Father
Heintzelman and Sister Sara. Recently Sister Sara added a
new dimension to one of the sessions by introducing new
and entertaining information about other breeds. To
accompany her presentation she used photos to acquaint
participants with the most common and best loved canines
Once a month ZuZu listens to children read at the
Bloomsburg Library. She meets three other dogs there,
two Great Danes, named Bella and Chloe, and Riley, a longhaired
black dog.
The Danville News has carried two stories about
ZuZu and her various occupations. Thanks to Father Jerry
Heintzelman, Maria Hall chaplain, ZuZu’s owner and
handler, the former show dog has added to her impressive
resumé.

The Power of Speech
Sharing Space and Good Work
In January of 2013, the Central Pennsylvania Aphasia
Center moved from its downtown Danville office to the first
floor of Maria Hall. This collaboration between the Aphasia
Center and the Sisters of Saints Cyril and Methodius is
strongly related to our mission and ministry as we serve
others in need. Without the move, the Center was in danger
of closing and those in need of the services it provides would
not have been able to find them in this area.
Aphasia is a communication disorder caused by
damage to the speech and language center of the brain,
usually from a stroke or other brain injury. It affects a person’s
ability to use and comprehend language. An estimated one
million individuals in the United States are living with
aphasia. The Central Pennsylvania Aphasia Center is a nonprofit
organization dedicated to improving the quality of life
for individuals struggling with chronic aphasia. “The
Aphasia Center and the Sisters share a like-minded mission,”
said the Center’s Executive Director Robin Petrus (pictured
below in her therapy room at Maria Hall).

Sister M. Rosaline (Helen Drab) was born in
Swoyersville PA, the daughter of John and Mary (Kolesar)
Drab. Helen attended St. John Nepomucene School,
Luzerne PA, and graduated from St. Nicholas High School,
Wilkes-Barre PA. She received a B.S. in Education from
Marywood University, Scranton PA.
On September 8, 1954, Helen entered the Sisters of
Saints Cyril and Methodius. After Profession, Sister
Rosaline taught primary grades in parish schools in PA and
SC, and taught in parish religious education programs in
Milton and Lewisburg PA. In the second graders she
taught, she laid the foundation for living the Christian faith
through the sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist.
Difficulties in her own health moved Sister
Rosaline out of teaching and into health care at Maria Joseph
Manor where she worked as a Nurse’s Aide. Later she used
her nursing skills in her parents’ last illness as they prepared
for death. After they died only she and her brother were
left, so Sister made sure that his refrigerator was stocked
with enough food, lovingly prepared, to last until her next
visit.
In God’s providence these experiences prepared her
for her future roles in pastoral care and chaplaincy at
Geisinger Medical Center, Maria Joseph and the Danville
State Hospital. After completing her Clinical Pastoral
Education and receiving a Master’s in Theological Studies
at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, Sister Rosaline
became a certified Chaplain in the National Association of
Catholic Chaplains. She then served as Director of Pastoral
Services at Maria Joseph Manor and Emmanuel Center.
Simultaneously, for almost 15 years Sister was a chaplain
at the Danville State Hospital. Sister was also a member of
the congregation’s Formation Team as Director of Sisters
in Temporary Profession.

A Peaceful Transition
Years of planning culminated on Saturday,
December 15 th , when the Dominican Sisters of St. Catherine
de’Ricci officially became members of the Dominican Sisters
of Peace at a ceremony held in Columbus OH. During the
ceremony, the de’Ricci Sisters reaffirmed their vows of
chastity, poverty and obedience as Dominicans of Peace.
They received community pendants and pins, their new
community Constitutions and Office book. The
presentation of a “treasure box” by outgoing de’Ricci
President Sister Anne Lythgoe to Sister Margaret Ormond,
the Prioress of the Dominican Sisters of Peace, represented
the gifts the Dominicans of Peace are receiving in the
persons of their newest members.
For their Sisters worldwide and for the Dominican
Sisters at Maria Hall who did not travel to Columbus, the
ceremony was carried by webcast. Projected in the Maria
Hall auditorium, the SSSCM’s and Carmelites were able to
watch the Dominicans in Columbus and those at Maria Hall

By word and example
Sister Rosaline taught adults
how to live their faith. As Sister Michael Ann commented in
her reflection at the Mass of Christian Burial in the Basilica,
she also presented an example of dying with grace.
In a brief eulogy which was read at the wake service,
Father Devine who worked with Sister Rosaline at the State
Hospital for many years, commended her for her sense of
humor, her zeal and compassion and her energy. “She must
have had stock in the Energizer Bunny,” he quipped. Father
also called to mind her humility, her love of the SSCM’s and
the priesthood and her works of service for others.
When life proved challenging, Sister Rosaline had
one bit of down-to-earth advice, “Go with the flow.” She did
not make negative or disparaging comments about people.
And in turn everyone who knew Rosy had nothing but the
best to say about her.

followed the ceremonies in both places.
After five and a half years of happy collaboration
between the Dominican Sisters and the SSCM’s at Maria Hall
and Maria Joseph, the Dominicans began moving by two’s
and three’s from Danville to facilities in Michigan, Ohio and
Kentucky operated by their new community. The opportunity
to get to know their new community members is an exciting
prospect for the departing Dominicans, but their absence
leaves a large void at Maria Hall and the Manor. Friendships

have to continue by phone, email
and snail mail.

for God’s providential care for our Congregation and for

Throughout the year we receive many letters recalling
the happy memories of Sisters who taught in our parish
schools and religious education programs.
Remembering how it is to give thanks to God each day
for His gifts, we pray daily for all our benefactors and
friends. And it does not end with Easter. We are
overjoyed with the promised gift of the Father and the
Son! The Spirit, our Sanctifier. Pentecost truly is a
glorious day, a day that presents all of us with a challenge
to continue to build the city of God together!
