Poor still pay for
MEXICO CITY (AP) —
Violent protests have driven
away corporate investment in
desperately needed municipal
water systems in developing
nations. So the world’s poor
buy bottled water from Coke,
Pepsi and other multinational
companies.
“Water is not for sale,”
demonstrators chanted at the
World Water Forum this
week. But they couldn’t be
more wrong — private companies
make much more
money selling bottled water
than they ever did developing
public water systems.
Companies also stand to benefit
from a renewed push for
big dams in the Third World.
So even though just about
everybody, from CEOs to aid
workers, spoke out against the
privatization of water, the
sel come back to the board
with an estimate of the number
of hours, and thus wages,
devoted to the abortive
debate.
“I want this body to realize
we’re accountable,” Smith
said. “I think (the staff) took it
seriously. … We have an
obligation to review (the
staff’s work) and we didn’t do
that. (It was) a very irresponsible
action by this body.”
But Delbar said he would
not approve of more staffhours
being spent on a discussion
he never wanted in the
first place. The information
was requested and provided,
and the supervisors made a
decision, he said.
“If Supervisor Smith would
like to bring forward a moratorium
for the coast, I’d be
happy to second that,” he said,
alluding to Smith’s district.
“But I made a decision for my
district.”
County Executive Officer
John Ball later noted that such
accounting is not typical prac-
Hopi
make wicker baskets.
“We want people to see the
range of baskets that Hopi
people make,” Ferri said.
The exhibit is exclusive to
Grace Hudson. The bulk of
the pieces are on loan from
other museums, and the
exhibit is being augmented by
pieces from private collectors
in Cleveland and Pasadena. In
all, 200 pieces will be on display.
“By our standards it’s a big
exhibit,” Ferri said.
In addition to baskets, the
show will also include a
woven Hopi marriage robe
and small statues representing
supernatural figures known as
Katsinas.
Baskets and other gifts play
an important role in the Hopi
marriage ceremony, which
can take between five and six
years to complete. Many gifts
are exchanged between the
families of the bride and
groom over this time period.
“It’s a way of involving all
family and friends in the relationship,”
Ferri said.
In Hopi culture, men are
weavers and will weave a
marriage robe for their bride.
The bride keeps this robe for
life and is buried in it.
tice and without a majority
requesting the analysis, Ball
said he was not inclined to do
so in this instance.
The other three supervisors
avowed diligence on their
part, largely saying they had
questions answered previously
and thus did not need the
staff reports.
Supervisor Hal Wagenet
said he thought the executive
office “should have framed
the time costs” to the board,
even though such scrutiny is
not routine. Wagenet added he
hoped the resource breakdown
could be part of future
discussions.
It appears Smith will not
allow the other supervisors to
forget the topic. She vowed to
discuss successful building
moratoriums in rural
California counties at future
meetings. But after reading a
newspaper report from Sutter
County on its building timeout,
Wagenet suggested county
comparisons can be dicey.
Nevertheless, Smith
assured the other supervisors
the moratorium series would
continue.
Seth Freedland can be
reached at udjsf@pacific.net.
In return, the bride and her
family make baskets and other
gifts for the groom and his
family. One of these baskets is
made in a “holding together
pattern” and symbolizes the
binding together of two families.
This basket is supposed
to commend the groom’s soul
to the afterlife when he dies.
In addition to marriage ceremonies,
baskets are also integral
to a ritual known as the
basket dance, which Ferri said
the Hopi believe is important
to the well-being of the world.
At the end of the dance, gifts
are thrown to the crowd; the
baskets are considered the
most valuable and desirable of
these gifts.
The exhibit will also
include photographs of Hopi
people still living in Arizona,
and on April 1, the museum
will host a screening of
“Hopi: Songs of the Fourth
World” by filmmaker Pat
Ferrero, who will be present
to discuss the film. The
screening will be from 1 to 3
p.m. at the Ukiah Civic Center
with a reception to follow at
the museum. Admission to
both events will be free.
The exhibit opens Saturday
and runs until June 25.
Suggested donations are $2
per person and $5 per family.
