HIGHLIGHTS OF DISCUSSION 2. EU and Brazil expressed concern on the use of steviol glycosides in F.C 01.7 since dairy based dessert are highly consumed by children. JECFA informed that the exposure assessment conducted to establish the ADI are based on several possible extreme scenarios e.g. assumption that all artificial sweeteners or sugar/honey are replaced by steviol glycosides. It is not true that consumption by children will exceed the ADI. Australia added that Members should remember that we are setting the maximum level. There is very high chance that industry will not use up to the maximum level because it is not economical. 3. EU and Brazil expressed concern on the use of steviol glycosides in F.C 04.1.2.1 as it is not technologically justified. New Zealand informed that other sweeteners are allowed in this F.C. Adding steviol is just to be consistent. Brazil noted that provisions for high intensity sweeteners in GSFA should be revised/looked into again in the future. 4. The pWG agreed to hold provision for F.C 05.3 for further comments since some countries informed that the level of 3500 mg/kg is too high and this product is consumed by children. 5. Thailand proposed a lower maximum level in F.C 06.8.1 as based on their study, the daily exposure exceeds ADI. They informed that Thailand is a high consumer of soybean based beverages. Malaysia, US and ICGMA supports the current proposed level. 6. EU questioned the need for steviol in F.C 09.2.4.1, 09.2.4.2 and 09.2.4.5. Japan informed that it is used to reduce the saltiness and provide sweetness to dried and cooked seafood products. This is due to consumer preference. Reservation The Delegations of the European Union and Norway expressed their reservation on the adoption of the provisions for steviol glycosides. COMMITTEE'S DECISION TINDAKAN MALAYSIA 24

HIGHLIGHTS OF DISCUSSION Verbal intervention during pWG “Malaysia would like to inform that steviol glycosides are permitted to be added into food at GMP level under the Malaysian Food Regulations 1985. However, Malaysia agrees with IDF to discontinue provision for F.C 01.2 and 01.2.1 as well as proposal by the Chair to insert Note in F.C 01.1.2 to inform that only flavoured products are allowed to add steviol glycoside. This is in line with the STAN 243 Codex Standard for Fermented Milks.” “Malaysia supports the adoption of maximum level 330mg/kg in F.C 01.7 Dairy-based desserts as it is used by the industry in addition to sugar and other types of sweetening substance.” “Malaysia agrees with the comments by US and supports the adoption of maximum level of 200mg/kg steviol glycosides in F.C 06.8.1. This level is technologically justified to produce the intensity of sweetness in the product.” (ix) Sulfites (INS 220-228, 539) *Note: Discussion during pWG 1. Belgium proposed maximum level of 10mg/kg in F.C 04.1.1.2. EU, Norway and Brazil does not allow preservative in fresh fruits. South Africa informed that sulphur dioxide is used in packaging of fresh fruits. Thailand proposed to add a note to limit the use only for longan and lychee at 50mg/kg. COMMITTEE'S DECISION (ix) Sulfites (INS 220-228, 539) The Committee agreed to amend the maximum level for sulfites in food category 04.2.2.6 “Vegetables (including mushrooms and fungi, roots and tubers, pulses and legumes, and aloe vera), seaweed, and nuts and seed pulps and preparations (e.g. vegetable desserts and sauces, candied vegetables) other that food category 04.2.2.5” to 300 mg/kg, noting that the level was lower than that currently included in the GSFA.
