The campaign also suggested another career path to her. Politics was
now just as captivating to her as fi ction. As The Fountainhead lay stillborn,
Rand had found it easy to write thirty pages of political philosophy.
In the 1940s she went on to forge a hybrid career, devoting herself to
the spread of political ideas as much as the creation of dramatic stories
and characters. It was the fi rst step toward an identity she would later
claim with pride: novelist and philosopher.
