Term 2
No. 6 - 24 May 2013
Peter Chapman
COLLEGE PRINCIPAL
From the Principal
A new term brings many different sporting and cultural events in which our
College will compete.
The only 'double-up' from last term is GPS & QDU Debating. BIS Debating
begins in Week 2.
The new sports for this term are GPS and CIC Football, CIC Rugby, GPS
and CIC Cross Country and GPS Tennis in which all our young men will
compete to the very best of their ability while exhibiting sportsmanship of
the highest calibre.
I have said many times over the years that being involved in team activities
can educate young men in many ways that can be of great benefit to other
aspects of their lives, including in the classroom. Teamwork, commitment,
discipline are life skills not just sporting attributes. Term 2 activities, whether
it be Debating or Cross Country, will therefore provide further valuable
learning experiences for our students.
I also would like to take this opportunity to thank parents and supporters. I'm sure that our students appreciate that
the weekend and night activities they enjoy are possible only because of your selfless support.
To our GPS and CIC colleagues, thank-you for your commitment to these competitions.
Good luck to all.
Please note: All draws are correct at time of printing.
Please check website for late changes.
Rugby
The CIC Team of the Week goes to the 6D team coached by Old Boys Sam Ruff and Aiden Cairns. Although success
has eluded them on the scoreboard I can proudly say that all boys have given their best at training and during
the game. Their never-say-die attitude ensures their first win is just around the corner. Other teams that impressed
were once again the 6As, which continue on a winning streak, along with the well-drilled 5A team which has been
competitive every game.
The 6Ds are required to meet me at the flag poles tomorrow to receive their pizzas.
We are away to Padua College this weekend in our Round 5 clash. Please visit the College website for the entire
schedule.
GPS sign-on - Thanks to all the boys who took the time to sign on for Rugby this season. Terrace Rugby will once
again see more than 750 boys pull on the red and black this season. It is vital that all boys wishing to play are registered
as I need to finalise playing numbers to assist with planning for the upcoming season. If you have not yet
signed on you are required to see me in the Sports Office by Monday 27 May , or you will miss out.
Football
This Saturday will see all GPS Football teams return to Tennyson to take on brother school Nudgee College. Our
CIC teams will be travelling to Banyo to take on Padua College. This year marks the 35th year of Terrace v Nudgee
Football games with the two Colleges original teams playing an 'unofficial' match back in 1978.
Terrace teams enter today's fixtures on the back of improving performances from last weekend against Nudgee Junior
and BBC. The CIC teams played especially well against NJC, registering three wins, three draws and one loss. I
know their coaches will be looking forward to continuing these good performances this week.
One aspect of our program that many may not be aware of is our specialist goalkeeper training. Our goalkeeping
guru, Paul Clifford runs two specialist training sessions per week with all GPS goalkeepers having at least one session
with Paul. Paul also is present on Saturdays to assess each keeper's performance and mentor the keepers. We
are very fortunate to have Paul working with the Terrace Football program.
The Terrace Football Dinner is fast approaching and will be held next Saturday night 1 June. If you have not organised
your tickets yet, don't delay, as the ticket cut off is tomorrow. There is only a limited number and with Socceroo
great, Craig Moore as our special guest, they are sure to sell out. For further information and to book go to College
Events on the website.
CIC - On Saturday the boys were rewarded for their outstanding attitudes and effort with a very pleasing set of results.
Each team again showed plenty of Terrace spirit and congratulations to Hayden Wilson and the 6B team who
managed their first victory of the season. This week we will continue to focus on structure and developing individual
and collective skills.
Best of luck to all teams today.
Debating
On Wednesday night the Senior A and Year 8 teams debated in Round 3 of the QDU Competition. Year 8 teams
debated the topic That community service should form a compulsory part of the high school curriculum'. Last week
saw wins by 10.1, 10.3, 10.4 and 12.1 teams. Congratulations to all winning teams.
Our final GPS debate is against IGS this Friday. The venue for Round 7 is the main campus, levels 5 and 6. This
is a short prep debate for all year levels.
The home school provides the supper on the night and as we are the home side in Round 7 all students should
bring a plate to share. Supper will be served outside Student Services. Each home round I am asking for parent
volunteers from a particular year level to help supervise the supper. I would like to ask any Years 11 or 12 parents
who may be available to help supervise supper in Round 7 to let me know, either directly or through their coach or
son. Please find the draw for Round 7 against IGS below.
In case you missed it in last week's article Terrace Debating now has an official twitter site. It is @GTDebating.
There will be updates, results and pictures posted regularly so please follow for that information.
Tennis
Last Saturday was always going to be a tough ask. Unfortunately we did not come away with any success to show for
the way in which we played and competed. Most of our teams very much played to their current potential and as
coaches that is all we can ask for.
Our winning run had come to an end but that gives us an opportunity to start our next winning streak.
Our 1st IV went into the match without our No. 1 player Ollie Anderson, who unfortunately was injured in training early
in the week. This meant that all of our boys had to play up a position against very credible opponents. While they
all played and fought well they went down to a formidable team.
Of the teams to perform well our 2nds while not getting a favourable result, certainly played some quality tennis. Henry
Kassay and John Panizza both came from a set down to fight back and win. It was very pleasing from my point of
view to see such grit and determination from those boys. Dion Lao, who has been performing consistently well
throughout the season, also fought back from being down in his 11A match. These matches are the ones that as a
coach I look for and are memory-makers for the boys.
Most players don’t remember winning the matches they should win, they remember the matches they probably
should have lost but fought back.
I would like to acknowledge the 2nd IV and 10D team as our Teams of the Week for their strong performances on
Saturday.
This week we go into our Nudgee round which is a home game for the 1st and 2nd IV. Please take the opportunity to
watch some entertaining tennis and support these boys against our rivals. The matches will start at 8.30am and finish
at around 2pm at the Victoria Park courts.
Goods luck to all our boys as we prepare to step back into the winners circle.
Cross Country
Last Friday, BSHS hosted Round 5 of the Cross Country Shield at Minnippi Parklands.
Although we were down on a few of our best runners, we still managed to win the meet overall in a great team performance.
Our U13 team started the day brilliantly winning their division, with Nick Beall and Jack Moore running strongly. Jack
Seymour and Noah Humphreys were good contributors to the U14s. Nick Murphy's wonderful improvement was the
highlight of the U15 race, reflecting this age groups improvement overall.
Our U16s won again with Luke Penberthy's first run for the season outstanding. Conor MacFarlane was back to his
best form in the Open race, supported by good efforts from Stephen Brown and John Kenny.
Current Shield standings: 1 GT 224, 2 BGS 165, 3 NC 161, 4 BSHS 155, 5 ACGS 122.
This certainly puts us in a great position to win our eighth consecutive Cross Country Shield with two meets remaining.
Results from yesterday's meet hosted by BBC will be in next week's Terrace News.
From the Director of Sport
After a successful first term of sport, our young men, coaches and supporters will be hoping for more of the same in
Term 2.
Last year our GPS and CIC footballers showed significant improvement in results across the year levels. The move
to Term 2 has ensured increased numbers and many players have taken up the sport enthusiastically for the first
time as the sport takes centre stage in its own right in home matches at Tennyson.
Our talented Tennis players have prepared strongly, especially over the Easter break, for the challenge ahead after
many encouraging performances in 2012.
Our CIC Rugby teams and our CIC and GPS Cross Country runners have traditionally been exceptionally strong.
Cross Country training and Running Club were well attended and expectations are once again high.
While winning is the ultimate goal, improvement and personal best performances are significant steps towards success.
And always remember that it is the team, not the individual that is most important.
From the Director of Culture
Damian Wright
Director of Sport
One of the many benefits of being a student at Terrace is the opportunity to be involved in a diverse range of activities
from Debating to Swimming, from Rugby to Chess.
In any one year a student can be involved in both cultural and sporting activities and be fully committed to both.
During Term 2 Debating (GPS, QDU and BIS) takes the competitive limelight in cultural activities but there are many
more in which your son may be involved during the year including the Middle School Production, choral tour to Gallipoli,
GPS Music Day, Theatresports, Senior Musical, Junior Music Day.
There will be regular input from our Debating Coordinator Ms Alex Cashin in 110 per cent. Other cultural matters will
be covered in the weekly Terrace News.
It promises to be another hectic term for students. The boys can be as busy as they are able to be, provided they
maintain the right balance with their studies.
A Terrace Gentleman is well-rounded, learned and respectful – attributes honed by many of our cultural pursuits.
