British Art Highlights
Contemporary Art Auctions
London, 15 & 16 February 2012
Sotheby’s is delighted to announce the Contemporary Art Auctions due to take
place this February. The Evening sale comprises a host of superlative works by
renowned luminaries of 20th Century British Art: spanning the School of London,
works by Francis Bacon, Leon Kossoff and Frank Auerbach are complemented by
a nuanced survey including signifi cant examples by Bridget Riley, Howard Hodgkin
and Anish Kapoor, through to Young British Artists’ Damien Hirst and Gary Hume.
There has never been a more exciting time for British art in London. With the
current David Hockney exhibition at the Royal Academy, the upcoming Damien
Hirst retrospective at Tate Modern and the Cultural Oylmpiad taking place from
June–September, 2012 stands as a spectacular opportunity to celebrate the very
best in British Art. Building on the remarkably strong results achieved for the sale
of Lucian Freud drawings in the Evill/Frost Collection in May 2011, and coinciding
with the highly anticipated exhibition of a lifetime of Freud’s portraiture at the
National Portrait Gallery, Sotheby’s is honoured to be offering a superb private
collection of fi ve works on paper by the artist, possibly the most encyclopaedic
group of drawings by Freud ever to be presented for public sale.
The Contemporary Art department at Sotheby’s London prides itself on presenting
to market the most outstanding in British artistic achievement. We welcome you
to view our Exhibition from 11–15 February 2012, and look forward to being part of,
and contributing to, this most exciting year for British art and culture in London.
