objects to regale <strong>the</strong> senses and give eiquisite<br />

pleasure to <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d ~ Has heaven <strong>in</strong>tended but to<br />

tempt and tantalize us, by plac<strong>in</strong>g elements of happ<strong>in</strong>ess,<br />

and sources of pleasure with<strong>in</strong> our reach ~ But<br />

why do I urge you to reason ~ <strong>the</strong> religion you revere,<br />

proscribes <strong>the</strong> rational powers, and repudiat s <strong>the</strong><br />

dictates of human understand<strong>in</strong>g I You cannot fail to<br />

see, that when reason is <strong>in</strong>terdicted, all argument is at<br />

an end, and <strong>the</strong> most palpable testimony of no avail.<br />
