Enola refra<strong>in</strong> from speak<strong>in</strong>g, yet she dared not for<br />

fear of be<strong>in</strong>g defeated <strong>in</strong> her object; rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g concealed<br />

until <strong>the</strong> darkness thickened so that she was<br />

<strong>in</strong> no danger of be<strong>in</strong>g seen, she summoned courage to<br />

climb <strong>the</strong> locust; and softly creep<strong>in</strong>g out upon <strong>the</strong><br />

project<strong>in</strong>g limb that swept <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>dow, she soon found<br />

herself near enough to toss <strong>the</strong> letter which Alonzo<br />

h committed to her, <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> apartment through <strong>the</strong><br />

n w<strong>in</strong>dow. While she was paus<strong>in</strong>g to make a<br />

ur fl<strong>in</strong>g, 1\ light was struck <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> room, hioh<br />

cn bled Enola to discover that ADna ri w<br />

nd commenced her orisons, she gently flung <strong>the</strong> letter<br />

<strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> apartment, which dropped on <strong>the</strong> floor <strong>in</strong><br />

front of <strong>the</strong> worshiper as if tossed by a spirit-hand.<br />

Seiz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> unexpected missive, Anna Maria sprang<br />

to her feet, looked quickly round <strong>the</strong> room, and <strong>the</strong>n<br />

out of <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>dow, but saw no one. "'Tis strange 1"<br />

she exclaimed to herself, "my door is closed, my w<strong>in</strong>dow<br />

high above <strong>the</strong> ground; I pla<strong>in</strong>ly saw it fall upon<br />

<strong>the</strong> floor-whence came it W that's <strong>the</strong> question 1- But<br />

what is this written upon it ~" and seat<strong>in</strong>g herself by<br />

th lamp, she read <strong>the</strong> name - Anna Maria Gerard :<br />

"'Tis Alonzo's handwrit<strong>in</strong>g 1" she exclaimed, and<br />

cag rly tear<strong>in</strong>g off <strong>the</strong> envelope, read as follows:<br />

..My DEAREST, AND LONG LOST .ANNA. MARIA. : _<br />

"I know not that your eye will ever light upon <strong>the</strong><br />

frail words now be<strong>in</strong>g traced by this trembl<strong>in</strong>g hand;<br />
