Enola's adventure-The mysterious letter-Anna Maria becomes<br />

distrustful of Dup<strong>in</strong>.<br />

THE subjo<strong>in</strong>ed letter was written by Alonzo Carleton,<br />

to his deluded Anna Maria before he was made<br />

acqua<strong>in</strong>ted with <strong>the</strong> fact that she had really taken <strong>the</strong><br />

monastic vows; yet he was becom<strong>in</strong>g sadly apprehensive,<br />

that such would be <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al result of <strong>the</strong> superstitious<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g to which she was be<strong>in</strong>g subjected<br />

under <strong>the</strong> direction of priest Dup<strong>in</strong>. The letter was<br />

confided to <strong>the</strong> hand of Enola Glenn, who found<br />

much difficulty <strong>in</strong> convey<strong>in</strong>g it to <strong>the</strong> object of his<br />

love, without <strong>the</strong> knowledge of <strong>the</strong> superior, and did<br />

not succeed until after Maria had taken <strong>the</strong> black vail.<br />

It was <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> twilight of <strong>the</strong> even<strong>in</strong>g, Enola had<br />

stealthily made her way <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> shady back-ground<br />

of <strong>the</strong> convent premises. A stately locust tree that<br />

stood <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> rear of <strong>the</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g, extended one of its<br />

strong branches <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> direction of an upper w<strong>in</strong>dow,<br />

until it came nearly <strong>in</strong> contact with it: by <strong>the</strong> fad<strong>in</strong>g<br />

light of <strong>the</strong> clos<strong>in</strong>g day, and <strong>the</strong> soft rays of <strong>the</strong><br />

even<strong>in</strong>g star, which hung like a golden lamp <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

western sky, Enola espied through <strong>the</strong> cluster<strong>in</strong>g<br />

foliage, look<strong>in</strong>g out from <strong>the</strong> little w<strong>in</strong>dow, a familiar<br />

face - it was <strong>the</strong> face of Apna Maria; scarcly could<br />
