CHAPTER I.<br />

The melancholy Nun-Her soliloquy, and rep<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>gs-Colloquy-<br />

The Superior of <strong>the</strong> Oonvent abruptly enters, hav<strong>in</strong>g overheard<br />

heretical remarks, and rebukes with severity- Thoughts on<br />

nature and reason.<br />

ONE rosy morn<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> smil<strong>in</strong>g month of May,<br />

<strong>the</strong>re might have been seen peer<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> narrow,<br />

open w<strong>in</strong>dow of a Convent, <strong>in</strong> a sequestered part of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Queen City of <strong>the</strong> West, a young female, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

'guise of a Nun-with fragile form, and pale, attenuated<br />

visage. She would have made upon your m<strong>in</strong>d<br />

<strong>the</strong> impression of faded beauty - though beautiful<br />

still. Her look was unhappy, dejected, and forlorn.<br />

Ah I a rare, sweet flower was that, plucked by a cruel<br />

hand, and left to p<strong>in</strong>e, wi<strong>the</strong>r and decay! Though<br />

deeply t<strong>in</strong>ged, and darkly shaded with <strong>the</strong> hue of<br />

melancholy, her blanched face was yet illumed with<br />

bright <strong>in</strong>telligence. In that speak<strong>in</strong>g eye, and pallid<br />

countenance, was to be read <strong>the</strong> history of a crushed<br />

and broken heart I With an air of discontent, her<br />

wander<strong>in</strong>g gaze, ever and anon, swept over <strong>the</strong> contracted<br />

space left open to <strong>the</strong> view-which consisted<br />
