Church, and <strong>the</strong> policy necessary to success.<br />

IN <strong>the</strong> even<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> same day on which Anna<br />

Maria Gerard received <strong>the</strong> forged letter, <strong>the</strong>re might<br />

have been seen <strong>in</strong> a private apartment adjo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g a<br />

ca<strong>the</strong>dral, a morose-look<strong>in</strong>g man, habited <strong>in</strong> black,<br />

and apparently enterta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g thoughts of <strong>the</strong> same color.<br />

His cadaverous face, rigid muscles, contracted brow,<br />

with <strong>the</strong> fiery sparkle, and viper-like glare of his<br />

small black eyes, would have brought over you a<br />

shudder, and called up thoughts of <strong>the</strong> midnight<br />

assass<strong>in</strong>, plott<strong>in</strong>g horrid deeds of murder. Solitary<br />

and alone he sat, fearfully-writh<strong>in</strong>g nnder <strong>the</strong> weight<br />

of some dark, oppressive thought: like Macbeth, he<br />

seemed striv<strong>in</strong>g to nerve resolution, and" br<strong>in</strong>g his<br />

courage to <strong>the</strong> stick<strong>in</strong>g place j" but unlike <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

Scotland, he wanted not' a spur to prick <strong>the</strong> sides of<br />

his <strong>in</strong>tent '- that he already had with<strong>in</strong> his malignant<br />

soul, goad<strong>in</strong>g him to desperation. Now and <strong>the</strong>n a<br />

fiendish smile dismally gleamed across his wr<strong>in</strong>kled<br />

visage, as if revel<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> imag<strong>in</strong>ary triumph over<br />

some fallen victim: at length, start<strong>in</strong>g to his feet, with<br />

measured strides he passed to <strong>the</strong> opposite side of bis<br />
