from <strong>the</strong> torments of purgatory. He begged <strong>the</strong><br />

privilege of visit<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m at <strong>the</strong>ir residence, on a<br />

future occasion, that he might have fur<strong>the</strong>r opportunity<br />

of recommend<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong>ir consideration, <strong>the</strong> holy<br />

Catholic faith.<br />

With some hesitancy, Mrs. Gerard granted him<br />

permISSIOn. Then with expressions of gratitude to<br />

heaven, for <strong>the</strong> hope of do<strong>in</strong>g good and effect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

salvation of souls, he left <strong>the</strong>m to <strong>the</strong>ir meditations,<br />

and went away.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g day, Priest Dup<strong>in</strong> visited <strong>the</strong><br />

residence of Mrs. Gerard; but was coolly received<br />

and regarded with evident suspicion. Quickly perceiv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

this, he grew reserved and circumspect <strong>in</strong> his conversation.<br />

So well did he now dissemble, and with snch<br />

apparent earnestness manifest sympathy on account<br />

of <strong>the</strong>ir late bereavement, that he failed not to produce<br />

a more favorableimpression, <strong>in</strong> his own behalf,<br />

upon <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d of <strong>the</strong> disconsolate widow. He prevailed<br />

on her, after many solemn and touch<strong>in</strong>g<br />

appeals, to allow him <strong>the</strong> privilege of say<strong>in</strong>g mass<br />

for her deceased husband; and he also obta<strong>in</strong>ed from<br />

her <strong>the</strong> promise, that herself and daughter would<br />

occasionally attend public worship at his church.<br />

After he had taken his departure, Anna Maria<br />

observed to her mo<strong>the</strong>r: "The presence of that<br />

mysterious personage, Ma, produces upon me s<strong>in</strong>gnlar
