ANNAMARIAGERARD,whose name has already been<br />

<strong>in</strong>cidentally mentioned, was a most <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g girlbright<br />

as a sunbeam, and sweet as a peach blossom;<br />

and was just budd<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to womanhood. She had<br />

from childhood manifested rare amiability of dispoaition,<br />

and more than ord<strong>in</strong>ary <strong>in</strong>telligence. It was<br />

quite impossible not to love her-so angelic was <strong>the</strong><br />

temper of her m<strong>in</strong>d, and so soft, so gentle, so w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

her manner. And how perfect <strong>in</strong> form I beautiful<br />

<strong>in</strong> feature I and graceful <strong>in</strong> action I But I will<br />

not say Anna Maria was faultless: conscious of pos:<br />

sess<strong>in</strong>g rare personal charms, she grew a little va<strong>in</strong>,<br />

Bought admiration, and delighted to m<strong>in</strong>gle <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

gay circles of fashion. She was an only child, and<br />

had been from <strong>in</strong>fancy <strong>the</strong> cherished object of parental<br />

affection. Though not tra<strong>in</strong>ed to piety, Anna<br />

Maria was by nature devotional; never<strong>the</strong>less, generally<br />

volatile and fond of pleasure. Her parents<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g of no religious persuasion, <strong>the</strong>ir associations<br />

were chiefly with <strong>the</strong> people of <strong>the</strong> world, and when<br />

<strong>the</strong>y attended church, it was only as a matter of form.<br />
