acknowledge it wrong, where is <strong>the</strong> hope of cur<strong>in</strong>g it ~<br />

While papists are avowedly <strong>in</strong>tolerant and systematically<br />

<strong>in</strong>culcate a spirit of persecution, I can see<br />

but little possibility of <strong>the</strong>ir outgrow<strong>in</strong>g that barbarian<br />

pr<strong>in</strong>ciple of ill-will toward those who differ from us.<br />

When men get right <strong>in</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ciple, <strong>the</strong>y will after<br />

awhile come right <strong>in</strong> practice-but seldom without."<br />

"If <strong>the</strong> Catholic clergy are <strong>the</strong> enemies of light, as<br />

you <strong>in</strong>sist, why do <strong>the</strong>y make such a parade about education<br />

~ To hear Mr. Dup<strong>in</strong> talk, you would th<strong>in</strong>k he<br />

was about to move heaven and earth, to have all our<br />

Protestant children educated! "<br />

" Policy! policy! it is but a stroke of policy. Why<br />

do <strong>the</strong>y not move heaven and earth to educate <strong>the</strong> children<br />

of papists! Look at <strong>the</strong> Catholic masses, how<br />

deplorably illiterate and benighted! What better evidence<br />

than this do you want of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>s<strong>in</strong>cerity of <strong>the</strong><br />

priesthood <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir great parade about education, which<br />

<strong>the</strong> ant-come, that <strong>the</strong>re is more thunder than lightn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir wonderful ado on <strong>the</strong> subject."<br />

Mr. Wimple now manifested a disposition to change<br />

<strong>the</strong> topic of conversation, by mak<strong>in</strong>g some remarks<br />

about <strong>the</strong> wea<strong>the</strong>r, and <strong>the</strong> probability of a warm<br />

summer; Squire Delmont was <strong>in</strong>cl<strong>in</strong>ed to be accommodat<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

and readily consented to discuss <strong>the</strong> state<br />

of <strong>the</strong> wea<strong>the</strong>r: upon this <strong>in</strong>nocent and unexcit<strong>in</strong>g<br />

subject, <strong>the</strong>ir m<strong>in</strong>ds grew calm, and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> utmost<br />

good feel<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> company separated, tak<strong>in</strong>g leave of<br />

each o<strong>the</strong>r with much agreeable ceremony.
