before elections. I know a class of men, who are all<br />

<strong>the</strong> while busy<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>mselves to get up a feel<strong>in</strong>g that<br />

papists are be<strong>in</strong>g trampled upon; that <strong>the</strong>y are badly<br />

used and are circumscribed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir privileges. These<br />

men have an object <strong>in</strong> view-but that object is not to<br />

promote justice and good-will: be<strong>in</strong>g a set of selfish,<br />

dishonest, renegade politicians, who have no o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

hope of climb<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to office than by becom<strong>in</strong>g fawn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

sycophants, <strong>the</strong>y th<strong>in</strong>k to <strong>in</strong>gratiate <strong>the</strong>mselves<br />

with papists by this k<strong>in</strong>d of maneuver, so as to<br />

obta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir votes. Those of us who refuse to flatter<br />

<strong>the</strong> pretensions of <strong>the</strong> Hierarchy and are unwill<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

submit to priestly rule and dictation, are to be<br />

denounced by <strong>the</strong>se demagogues, as uncharitable,<br />

illiberal and vile calumniators I"<br />

"I take it, Squire, that all <strong>the</strong> churches are a little<br />

given to persecution when <strong>the</strong>y have <strong>the</strong> power; and<br />

I reckon Catholics are not worse than <strong>the</strong> rest."<br />

"Unquestionably, <strong>the</strong>re is too much illiberality and<br />

a great want of charity among all sects; yet <strong>the</strong><br />

Catholic, is <strong>the</strong> only denom<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>in</strong> Christendom,<br />

that teaches persecution and openly avows and defends<br />

<strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ciple of religious <strong>in</strong>tolerance. All Protestants<br />

unite <strong>in</strong> condemn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ciple as wrong and<br />

foreign to <strong>the</strong> spirit of Christianity; and often do <strong>the</strong>y<br />

confess <strong>the</strong>mselves at fault, <strong>in</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g betrayed <strong>in</strong>to a<br />

spirit of persecution toward one ano<strong>the</strong>r; <strong>in</strong>deed it is<br />

common to hear <strong>the</strong>m deplore a want of charity <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves. Such be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> case, <strong>the</strong>re is a chance<br />

for correct<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> evil; but <strong>in</strong> those who do not
