<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> papal conntries of Europe, <strong>the</strong>n mnst<br />

it be acknowledged, <strong>the</strong> annals of <strong>the</strong> past, can <strong>in</strong><br />

noth<strong>in</strong>g be relied on. We might refer to Catholic<br />

authorities if it were necessary: I 'm prepared to<br />

produce works of high repnte <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> church of Rome,<br />

where<strong>in</strong> popes and <strong>the</strong>ir councils are landed for <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

zeal <strong>in</strong> exterm<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>fidels and heretics; and <strong>the</strong><br />

most barbarous and sangu<strong>in</strong>ary deeds justified. It is<br />

not claimed by auy accredited Catholic author, that<br />

<strong>the</strong> church of Rome ever tolerated fr dom of op<strong>in</strong>ion,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> right of private judgment <strong>in</strong> matters of religion;<br />

nor is it ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed she ought; but <strong>the</strong> propriety<br />

of putt<strong>in</strong>g to death <strong>in</strong>corrigible heretics, is strenuously<br />

<strong>in</strong>sisted on. Out of <strong>the</strong>ir own mouths, <strong>the</strong>n,<br />

and by <strong>the</strong>ir own pens, shall we judge, and condemn<br />

<strong>the</strong>m."<br />

"Are we to blame papists <strong>in</strong> this country, for what<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir brethren did <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r lands and <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r times ~"<br />

"No; for that, we blame <strong>the</strong>m not; but ra'<strong>the</strong>r for<br />

jU8tify<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir horrid deeds, <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r lands and<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r times. In that justification, <strong>the</strong>y admit <strong>the</strong><br />

pr<strong>in</strong>ciple right; ~nd <strong>the</strong>reby virtually say, <strong>the</strong>y would<br />

now, if <strong>the</strong>y dared, even here, treat Protestants with<br />

like severity."<br />

"0, but we all see that Catholics are becom<strong>in</strong>g<br />

more liberal- no danger of <strong>the</strong>ir hurt<strong>in</strong>g anybody<br />

now-a-days."<br />

" It is <strong>the</strong> boast of <strong>the</strong> Roman hierarchy, that <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

religion is unalterably <strong>the</strong> same through all time; that<br />
