land: encouraged by <strong>the</strong>ir voices, he put forth all his<br />

energies, and after a brief struggle, dragged himself<br />

out more scared than hurt. Pony too, after prodigious<br />

flounder<strong>in</strong>g, made good his escape; <strong>the</strong> dogs soon<br />

grow<strong>in</strong>g weary of <strong>the</strong>ir battle-ground, abandoned <strong>the</strong><br />

fight, and retired from <strong>the</strong> muddy scene <strong>in</strong> disgust, for<br />

which <strong>the</strong>y received <strong>the</strong> hearty thanks of <strong>the</strong> bull-<br />

frogs, who were quite unaccustomed to such pugilistic<br />

visitors; and Major Bullfrog, <strong>the</strong> chief dignitary,<br />

among <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>habitants of <strong>the</strong> bas<strong>in</strong>, declared after all<br />

was over, that he had been quite frightened out of his<br />

wits, and wondered <strong>in</strong> his soul where such pugnaciou<br />

barbarians could have sprung from, as had just raised<br />

such a rumpus <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir peaceful doma<strong>in</strong> I<br />

Wimple received <strong>the</strong> condolence of <strong>the</strong> ladies, which<br />

soon pacified him; and after a plentiful application<br />

of water, which, <strong>the</strong>y had <strong>the</strong> good fortune to f<strong>in</strong>d<br />

near-by, <strong>the</strong> little man and his pony, were thoroughly<br />

cleansed from <strong>the</strong> filth of <strong>the</strong> mire; and directly <strong>the</strong><br />

company aga<strong>in</strong> took up <strong>the</strong>ir l<strong>in</strong>e of march across <strong>the</strong><br />

prairie.<br />

Near sunset, <strong>the</strong>y reached a beautiful grove, through<br />

which flowed a clear, runn<strong>in</strong>g brook; <strong>the</strong>re <strong>the</strong>y<br />

pitched <strong>the</strong>ir tent, k<strong>in</strong>dled a bright fire and cooked a<br />

delicious supper. Alonzo, hav<strong>in</strong>g luckily killed a f<strong>in</strong>e<br />

deer with<strong>in</strong> a short distance of <strong>the</strong> grove, fresh veni-<br />

son furnished a rarity for <strong>the</strong>ir table that night. And<br />

<strong>the</strong>y had a delightful time, talk<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> day's adven-<br />

ture, and <strong>the</strong> romance of <strong>the</strong>ir journey. Wimple
