" I can knock a wolf's eye out, at a hundred yards,<br />

every crack I" responded Wimple, boast<strong>in</strong>gly, "if I<br />

can't, <strong>the</strong>n bury me alive I"<br />

"But let me admonish you, Mr. Wimple," said<br />

Burbanks, "<strong>the</strong>se Grand-prairie wolves are fearful<br />

animals to encounter; if <strong>the</strong>re should be many <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

gang, you'll hardly be safe on that little pony; <strong>the</strong>y<br />

might eat you and your little horse up before we<br />

could possibly rescue you from <strong>the</strong>ir voracious jaws:<br />

but I '11tell you what you can do <strong>in</strong> case of danger;<br />

just put spurs to your pony, and dash <strong>in</strong>to that bas<strong>in</strong><br />

down <strong>the</strong>re, and conceal yourself among <strong>the</strong> tall grass;<br />

wolves never go <strong>in</strong>to such places."<br />

Now <strong>the</strong> hounds began to bellow, and <strong>the</strong> sound of<br />

horses' feet were heard <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> distance; soon <strong>the</strong>y<br />

came thunder<strong>in</strong>g on like a tempest, mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> solid<br />

earth tremble before <strong>the</strong>m I Directly <strong>the</strong> pursued<br />

and pursuers were <strong>in</strong> full view; <strong>the</strong> dismayed wolves<br />

fly<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> bas<strong>in</strong> for refuge; <strong>the</strong> bellow<strong>in</strong>g hounds<br />

just beh<strong>in</strong>d; and at <strong>the</strong>ir heels, <strong>the</strong> riders, all halloo<strong>in</strong>g<br />

at <strong>the</strong> top of <strong>the</strong>ir voices.<br />

"They '11be on us <strong>in</strong> a moment I" exclaimed Burbanks,<br />

"<strong>the</strong>re's vengeance <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>m wolves-see, <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

eyes look like balls of fire I"
