sunrise. Anna Maria and Alonzo led <strong>the</strong> way,<br />

mounted on noble horses, elegantly caparisoned; Miss<br />

Glidewell followed, rid<strong>in</strong>g a very tall horse, and alongside<br />

her rode Will Wimple, perched on a little pony,<br />

talk<strong>in</strong>g with all his might, and nearly break<strong>in</strong>g his<br />

neck to look up at his lady companion, which required<br />

him to throw back his head as if gaz<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong><br />

stars; and his pony be<strong>in</strong>g a clumsy..,rough trotter,<br />

bounced <strong>the</strong> little man upon his seat like a ball, to <strong>the</strong><br />

no little amusement of <strong>the</strong> facetious Mary. The rest<br />

of <strong>the</strong> company were <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> four-horse vehicle, br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g<br />

up <strong>the</strong> rear. Emerg<strong>in</strong>g from a deeply-shaded<br />

forest to an em<strong>in</strong>ence th<strong>in</strong>ly covered with p<strong>in</strong>e-trees,<br />

<strong>the</strong> immense prairie suddenly burst upon <strong>the</strong>ir view,<br />

with all its resplendence and surpass<strong>in</strong>g grandeur.<br />

Inst<strong>in</strong>ctively, Maria and Alonzo at <strong>the</strong> same <strong>in</strong>stant<br />

re<strong>in</strong>ed up <strong>the</strong>ir horses, and all came to a halt, and for<br />

some moments, <strong>in</strong> profound silence, contemplated <strong>the</strong><br />

impos<strong>in</strong>g scene outstretched before <strong>the</strong>m. It was an<br />

un<strong>in</strong>habited region, and had never been marred by<br />

<strong>the</strong> hand of civilization. Flowers of <strong>the</strong> richest hue,<br />

<strong>in</strong> endless variety, enameled <strong>the</strong> vast extended pla<strong>in</strong>;<br />

and <strong>the</strong> distant groves, dott<strong>in</strong>g it here and <strong>the</strong>re, appeared<br />

like emerald isles float<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a sea of glory.<br />

All gazed with rapture upon <strong>the</strong> magnificent prospect<br />

except Wimple and <strong>the</strong> hounds - he was whistl<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

<strong>the</strong>m, and <strong>the</strong>y were wagg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir tails to him. Even<br />

<strong>the</strong> horses pricked up <strong>the</strong>ir ears, and proudly lift<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir heads aloft, looked out with evident admiration<br />

on <strong>the</strong> wide wide prairie I
