saddle-horses, for change and variety; a pack of<br />

hounds; several guns, pistols, cook<strong>in</strong>g-utensils, provisions;<br />

a movable canvas tent, blankets, travel<strong>in</strong>g<br />

apparel, etc."<br />

So <strong>the</strong> whole plan was agreed upon <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same<br />

hour that <strong>the</strong> novel adventure was first suggested.<br />

Preparations were accord<strong>in</strong>gly made. The persons<br />

whose names have already been mentioned formed<br />

<strong>the</strong> party; and <strong>in</strong> less than a fortnight from <strong>the</strong> even<strong>in</strong>g<br />

on which Anna proposed <strong>the</strong> excursion, all th<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

were <strong>in</strong> read<strong>in</strong>ess, and <strong>the</strong> romantic expedition com- '<br />

menced. In great glee, and overflow<strong>in</strong>g with hilarity,<br />

<strong>the</strong> party set out from <strong>the</strong> Queen City on <strong>the</strong> first of<br />

September, an autumnal-look<strong>in</strong>g day, <strong>the</strong> redness of<br />

<strong>the</strong> sun and smok<strong>in</strong>~ss of <strong>the</strong> atmosphere <strong>in</strong>dicat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> sett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> of an Indian summer.<br />

As it is <strong>in</strong>tended to note only <strong>the</strong> lead<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>cidents<br />

and most prom<strong>in</strong>ent events of <strong>the</strong> excursion, we will<br />

pass over several days' travel, till we come to where<br />

<strong>the</strong> tourists take <strong>the</strong>ir first view of <strong>the</strong> Grand Prairie,<br />

and make a descent upon an arm of it from P<strong>in</strong>e<br />

Ridge, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> north-western part of Indiana.<br />

'T was a lovely morn<strong>in</strong>g; <strong>the</strong> golden sun had risen<br />

<strong>in</strong> a cloudless sky; <strong>the</strong> party had pitched <strong>the</strong>ir tent<br />

<strong>the</strong> night previous <strong>in</strong> a p<strong>in</strong>e-wood, about an hour's<br />
