hold. 'Phe truth is, <strong>the</strong> Catholic clergy are not generally<br />

educated men."<br />

"I mean <strong>the</strong>y are not liberally educated. They<br />

may have aU learned to read Lat<strong>in</strong>, and some of <strong>the</strong>m<br />

English; but <strong>the</strong>y are not men of thorough and varied<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g. I say what I know; for such have been<br />

my opportunities, <strong>in</strong> relation to a knowledge of <strong>the</strong><br />

clergy, and <strong>the</strong> extent of <strong>the</strong>ir scientific and literary<br />

atta<strong>in</strong>ments, that I'm prepared to speak advisedly<br />

upon <strong>the</strong> subject."<br />

Catholic priests are men of learn<strong>in</strong>g! Why it is<br />

given up on all hands <strong>the</strong>y are <strong>the</strong> profoundest scholars<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world!"<br />

" I'm fully aware that papists make such pretensions,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> illiterate have not been slow to believe<br />

<strong>the</strong>m. Many take for granted whatever is boldly<br />

asserted-especially if oft repeated. This may account<br />

for <strong>the</strong> prevalent op<strong>in</strong>ion as to <strong>the</strong> priesthood<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g so vastly learned. Protestants, hav<strong>in</strong>g generally<br />

so little opportunity for test<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> education<br />

ei<strong>the</strong>r of Romish priests or teachers, it is not so<br />

strange <strong>the</strong>y should be deceived. That <strong>the</strong>re are to<br />

be found among <strong>the</strong> clergy profound scholars is by<br />

no means doubted; yet for <strong>the</strong> most part, preachers<br />

and teachers of <strong>the</strong> Church of Rome are exceed<strong>in</strong>gly
