<strong>the</strong> people to express <strong>the</strong>ir disapprobation and feel<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

of abhorrence, by burn<strong>in</strong>g effigies. Have not our<br />

own native-born Americans sometimes been treated <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> same way ~ Even honest John Tyler, merely for a.<br />

political measure, which awakened a burst of popular<br />

<strong>in</strong>dignation, was burnt <strong>in</strong> effigy <strong>in</strong> many parts of <strong>the</strong><br />

Union. At Nashville, Tenn., <strong>the</strong> citizens, not content<br />

with hang<strong>in</strong>g and burn<strong>in</strong>g poor John's effigy,compelled<br />

a negro slave to give it first a severe cowhid<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
